What is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)?

SMA is the number-one inherited cause of death of children under two.

SMA is incurable, untreatable, fatal and underfunded.

The gene is carried by seven million potential parents, unknowingly.

One in every 6,000 babies is born with SMA

One in every 40 people carries the gene that causes SMA.

A child of two carriers has a 1 in 4 chance of developing SMA.

Both carriers have to pass on the defective gene in order for the child to develop SMA

SMA is a genetic disease that causes a dramatic loss of strength and, in the worst cases, the loss of ability to swallow and breathe. The mind remains unaffected, while the muscles waste away.

SMA occurs when a vital gene (called the “survivor motor neuron†gene or SMN gene) is deleted or missing, preventing the creation of a protein necessary for muscle strength.

SMA is a type of Muscular Dystrophy, also described as the cousin to ALS-Luke Gehrig’s Disease

SMA does not affect sensation and intellectual activity in patients. It commonly is observed that patients with SMA are unusually bright and sociable.

There are four types;

Type 1 is usually fatal shortly after diagnosis to 1 year of age.

Type II children are never able to walk and suffer from a range of muscular, respiratory, and cardiac ailments. Life expectancy is also very short

Type III and IV affect teenagers and adults and also cause muscular breakdowns, the need for walkers, canes, and wheelchairs.

SMA can affect anyone, any age, any race, any sex
