Pats Trade for Haynesworth (merged)

I have been impressed with Big Vince's leadership skills over the years and this will be his stiffest test. Hopefully Albert will come in knowing he has to fit in and not that everyone around him needs to fit to him. I want to see what type of shape he is in.

As for the 3-4 thing. The Pats were in 4 man front sub packages quite a bit last year. He may be a pass rush specialist in subpackages. Granted he will need to redo his contract to get that.

I think everybody is missing the real issue Haynesworth had with the 3-4, he didn't want to play on the nose. He didn't think it utilized his talents as a run stopper and pass rusher. In NE, he will play on the end in the base defense, and probably play in the situational 4-3 formations that Belichick like to put into the game plan.

My guess is that, assuming he makes the team, he starts and is on the field for at least 50% of the plays.

This is such a Belichick type move, low risk/high reward type of thing. If he plays the Pats get one of the best defensive linemen in the game for a 2013 fifth round pick, if he turns into a dog they cut him and nothing is lost except the pick they traded for him and the cap room he uses up this year.

This is a good gamble, it should work at least for this year. Haynesworth need to rehab his image, and as long as he buys into the program here in NE, he will be put into a position where he can succeed. He should be pretty motivated to be a good soldier for at least this year, he probably knows that his contract makes him a one year experiment in NE. He is does his job and doesn't cause any trouble, he could be renegotiated. If be proves that being an ********* is in his DNA and flames out, nobody will touch him except the dregs of the NFL. I'll bet a nickle that he has a very good year this year.

I am a bit confused by the fan reaction. Don't the same reasons that apply for not bringing Moss also apply to Haynesworth? I am piqued by the move but not super excited, it is a gamble that could pay off big time though and the pass rush has been addressed (in a gambling sort of way).

Now I just need the wide receiver and I will be content.

As someone else said, Moss has already proven that he can be a problem boat rower here. That's what got him tossed out of the boat. Albert is being given the same chance here that Moss was already given back in 2007. Moss has already proven here that he can't consistently be a team player even on a BB team.

The nature of fan bases crack me up. I'm surrounded by Redskin fans here at work, and they are dancing in the aisles at getting rid of Haynesworth. I come to our board here, and people are calling BB a genius and dancing in the aisles at getting Haynesworth.

Would a front 4 of Stroud, Haynesworth, Wilfolk and Brace be the largest in NFL history? :)

Of all the playoff failures, the run defense has easily been the worst. From Ray Rice prancing 80 yards to LdT running an outside sweep 15 yards in the endzone, it's been a horrible thing to watch. The Patriots used to have a nasty defense when they could stop the run with their front three and force quarterbacks to throw against a secondary (which was never that great but knew what was coming.)

That said, Haynesworth is a giant d-bag. There goes my one saving grace of the Pats losing to the Jets last year, that the Pats don't sell out their souls with guys like Holmes, Edwards, etc.

This will be interesting. The Pats defense already improved with an extra year for guys like Mayo, Chung, Brace, McCourty, etc., in addition to returning Bodden, Wright, and Warren.

The cat has $40M - $60M in the bank, so I doubt there is a ton of incentive to get his reputation back, but we'll find out. :)

Well, you gotta assume that Belichick talked to Haynesworth before the trade and he said he is going to be a good soldier and actually put in the effort, but I am not really thrilled with this trade. Haynesworth is immensly talented, but he is a huge cancer too.

If somehow Belichick can get him to buy into the system and try, it is a huge trade. If not, he will be gone really quick. On the bright side, it is a low risk, high reward try of trade.

That about sums it up. Big Albert knows that BB cut Randy Moss in a heartbeat for causing problems and, for all his impact, Haynesworth ain't no Randy Moss.

haynesworth does not want to play in a 3-4 defense, are moving to a 4-3 defense?

Haynesworth didn't want to be the NT in the 3-4. I bet that playing DE in the 3-4 with Wilfork and Ty Warren will change his mind..

Thats amazing, inredible, astounding.

I need to lie down

But this is a rare situation where both groups are right. The Redskins had to move on and they weren't getting anything for Haynesworth, so their fans are right to celebrate.

But somewhere in there is a great player, and the Pats now have him (and his impending sexual assault trial, true). It's got about a 1 in 4 chance of working out, I'd say. But there's no downside at all, really, is there? A 2013 5th-rounder is the downside. So it's no-risk, potentially high reward, and it'll be fun to watch. I doubt the leash is going to be very long here. And as fans, what the f*** else do we have to do but hit refresh on this site every five minutes and get excited about random acquisitions? We got a potentially great player for nothing and now we get to watch to see if it works out, which is definitely an improvement over hoping that Alex Silvestro or Clay Nurse turns into James Harrison.

I live in DC, have heard all of the stories for the past few years about Albert and I am a little conflicted. AH wasn't upset about playing nose per se, he was just completely unhappy about playing in a 3-4 in general. He was just arrested a few weeks ago for road rage and has numerous other offenses. LAst year he took a huge roster bonus and THEN decided he didn't feel like playing anymore for Shanahan. He is a spoiled gigantic brat who has a horrible attitude about what people OWE him because he is Albert Haynesworth. Skins fans SHOULD be thrilled to get rid of him - its addition by subtraction.

If he decides he feels like playing then the Pats have just acquired a great player (maybe), if not then they have a headache which is far bayond anything Randy ever dreamed of being.

We're just going to get him in shape so we can trade him to the Raiders for a 2012 1st and a 2013 2nd.

:wha:

Yeah, but for a fifth round pick, he can be cut at any time with very little downside. I am not sure how it will work out, but if he has any pride at all he will be OK.

They already play a lot of 4-3 don't they? Belichick likes to change things up - especially when the rest of the league jumped on his 3-4 bandwagon increasing competition for 3-4 tuned defensive players and leaving quality 4-3 guys on the market for a lot less.

The value of Barstool Sports Boston just went through the roof.

Mass Highway is reporting a flood of Smokeshow Hotties fleeing the area.

Our 2-DL package will be very interesting indeed this year.
