Kiper: High Praise for Patriots 2010 Draft

I hate it when people bag on the 07 draft. Some people fail to realize that Welker was traded for a 2nd round pick and Randy Moss a 4th? We also aquired Stallworth in the offseason. Although we didnt draft well overall that year you can still say they made good with their drarft picks.

Fair enough, and it was also a crap draft to begin with, which is why BB was almost eager to trade those picks. But usually he finds a gem or two in the later rounds. While we only had one pick in the first 3 rounds, we still had 8 picks after that, and none of them panned out. So he definitely deserves credit for those deals, but he didn't mortgage the entire draft class for a few guys either. 1 for 9 never looks good.

2007 DRAFT - A LOUSY DRAFT - FIRST FOUR ROUNDS WERE JUST FINE

1) MERIWEATHER
We did well with this late first round pick. Lots of folks did much worse. Meriweather was a starter and a pro-bowler.

2) traded for all-world WELKER nuff said

4) BROWN
So, we tried to find a backup NT and it didn't work out. This is not all that unusual, is it?

4) traded for Moss - nuff said

FIFTH THROUGH EIGHTH IN A LOUSY DRAFT - NO WINNERS FOR THE PATRIOTS
Some would have kept Justin Rogers on the squad. But in the end, we are spoiled with the recent success of later picks and of the earlier year nuggets late (Brady, Givens, Banta-Cain). Sometimes the magic just doesn't work.

BOTTOM LINE FOR 2011
This is another very shallow draft. Nuggets late will be hard to find.
But, then. we hvae lots of picks early.

Yes there are red shirts in the professionals. It's called practice squad (and sometimes special teams). James Harrison of the Steelers was on and off their practice squad for 2 years before becoming NFL Defensive Player of Year.

Pretty safe to say this is a "red shirt" year for Taylor Price.

That is not a red shirt.

Redshirt is a term used in American college athletics that refers to delaying or suspending an athlete's participation in order to lengthen his or her period of eligibility.

Practice squad is the practice squad. Practice squad =/= "redshirting" a professional athlete.

Red shirt is rookie injured reserve. BB does it regularly as do all teams.

It was an AWESOME!!!! draft. Oscar Lua!!! Mike Elgin!!! Justise Hairstin!!! Clint Oldenburg!!! Corey Hilliard!!! Kareem Brown!!!

That is an amazing collection of talent, the foundation of the next dynasty!!! I don't know how anybody could have anything but good things to say about that draft.

2007 NFL Draft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Look at rounds 5-7. Out of 120+ guys, unless my eyes are mistaken the only halfway decent players are Steve Breaston and Brent Celek.

The class sucked.

Maybe it did, yet the Giants somehow managed to bat .1000 in rounds 4-7.

4. LS/LB Zak DeOssie -2008 ST Pro Bowler
5. TE Kevin Boss - 3 year starter
6. OL Adam Koets - started 4 games this year, signed extension this week.
7. S Michael Johnson -2 year starter
7. RB Ahmad Bradshaw -3rd in NFL in Rushing on pace for 1500 yards, chosen after all of the Patriot draft picks

For those who want to keep on insisting that the draft sucked, it wasn't too bad for the Giants now was it?

That is still not a "redshirt" by any means. Redshirt players can still practice with the team in college, IR'd players cannot. Look at players who were IR'd their rookie year - guys like Crable in McKenzie.

It's not a good thing when a player hits IR his rookie year. Maybe for a guy like Kade Weston, a 7th rounder, when he probably wasn't going to make the team anyways. But not for anyone else.

Where do you get that the 2011 draft is shallow?

BTW, the 2007 draft was bad for most everyone.. Not just the Patriots.

There is no "MAYBE" about it. The 2007 draft was horrible all around. The Giants are the exception, not the rule..

There is also no "MAYBE" in the fact that 5 out of 5 is a whole lot better than 0 out of 8. Sorry, Pats don't get credit for making 8 bad picks in a bad draft.

Anyone with half a brain knew what he was talking about....
