Montana had a serious injury that opened the door. A back injury at his age it was conceivable that he would never be the same player. He didn't take it on the chin for his team because the commissioner has a hard on for them.Yeah, this is what the no-thought quick take specialists always miss. With Montana/Young, the 49ers waited to see an actual decline from Montana before they seriously entertained the possibility of replacing him. They were essentially forced to, because moving forward with Montana as a full-time QB was realistically off the table whether they kept him or traded him.
Meanwhile, Garoppolo has as many serious injuries through 6 quarters of his career as Brady has through 16 years.
