Joe Montana to Steve Young II?

Dont know if Jimmy will be as good as Young but its clear he will be a good NFL QB, at worst. People who think BB would keep a 40 year old Brady over a 25 year old Garappolo dont know BB.

A fairly large percentage of this board was saying the same thing in 2008, just replace 40 year old with "coming off a devastating knee injury". People who think keeping Garoppolo over Brady makes sense don't know the difference between a good QB and a great QB.

It's a testament to how spoiled we are by Brady that there are people who are willing to move on from him based on 6 good quarters from his backup. Garoppolo is still an unknown, and given the injury he suffered today he'll remain an unknown for the next year at least. Let some other desperate team with no QB make us a godfather offer so they can take that gamble.

Team would be stupid to not invest in Jimmy beyond 2017.

But the team doesn't get to make that decision. Unless they use the franchise tag, Jimmy gets to control his own destiny...and Jimmy pretty clearly wants to play football.

I'm surprised so many people are willing to waste a year of Belichick's career, which is exactly what would happen if they were to try keeping both QBs in 2018.

Why? Why would Jimmy sign here to sit for an as-of-yet unknown number of years? And why would he sign a team-friendly deal?

He probably cares about money and he probably cares about starting ASAP. He gets neither of those from New England.
If the team thinks Jimmy is the successor, Brady will be pushed to retire imo. If he's elite beyond 2018 it will be a miracle anyways. So your talking at tops 1 year sitting after his rookie deal.

And why would he rather stay here for less? Because true competitors don't wanna be on trash teams and those are who have cap.

Seriously I love TB12 but the time is coming and fast that he will be replaced. Beat to thing long term instead of clinging to him.

In 6 quarters of play, Jimmy went in the eyes of a large chunk of this board from "I'm not sure we can go 2-2 with him" to "we should replace Brady with him".

Even for this place, that's about as crazy and hysterical of an overreaction as I've seen.

After watching Brady for 15 years, what makes you believe that he could be "pushed to retire" if he still wants to play? He's made it abundantly clear, many many times, that he intends to play as long as he can.

Or Jimmy resigns for a team friendly deal knowing he will be the starter...

Brady isn't playing through 2019 imo anyways.
Why would Garoppolo do that? You only get so many years in this league and so many opportunities to earn a big contract. You are living in a fairytale land if you think that could happen.

I don't know. "Trade Brady, keep Cassel" had the benefit of a full season of Cassel, but "Trade Brady, keep JAG" has Brady's age.

It's a tough call.

It's madness. More time is needed . People are overlooking TBs dead cap # for 2017.

He is going nowhere

Montana was replaced by Young because he became increasingly brittle, then missed all but one game of a season where they went 14-2 and lost to the dynastic Cowboys in the NFCCG.

I was living in 49ers territory when this was happening. I remember the Chronicle running a big image of Montana annotated with all of the surgeries, injuries etc. to each part of his body. It was pretty sobering. From 1985-1992 (his last season in SF), Joe didn't play a single 16-game season.

Meanwhile Brady hasn't lost a game to injury in 8 years. So yes, a very different situation.

Yeah, this is what the no-thought quick take specialists always miss. With Montana/Young, the 49ers waited to see an actual decline from Montana before they seriously entertained the possibility of replacing him. They were essentially forced to, because moving forward with Montana as a full-time QB was realistically off the table whether they kept him or traded him.

Meanwhile, Garoppolo has as many serious injuries through 6 quarters of his career as Brady has through 16 years.

Even his 2018 dead cap is pretty bad. Not completely untenable like 2017, but for what it would take to keep Jimmy past 2017 (presumably $20M+ per), a $14M dead cap hit from Brady = too much invested in QBs to reasonably compete

On a serious note I think we need to get Josh McDaniels to push BB out of his HC position.

He's old and not going to coach forever and it would be foolish to let JM go to another team.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I'm delusional one yet y'all are 100% confident in a 39 yr old QB playing elite until 2020... I can assure you the BB and Brady have discussed this. BB will always do what's best for the team. Keeping a QB you might get 3 elite years vs keeping one you could have for a decade is an easy choice. The only way it's gonna be a beautiful ending is if he wins the SB and retires, otherwise he's not gonna go out how he wants imo. Brady is likely gone by 2018.

The last 11 Super Bowls have been won by 10 different franchises. This isn't the only place Jimmy can be good (or win). He's also not the only guy who can be good after Brady. He would be the only guy who would immediately cost more than the legend he'd be replacing.

Anyone who wanted to replace Brady after 2008 was being silly. Just like anyone who wants to keep him beyond 2017. you trade Brady for two firsts after this year and start the Jimmy G era with a strong team and a boatload of picks.

I think people underestimate how good Brady and McDaniels have made players such as Edelman, Amendola and now Hogan at getting open. Garoppolo has thrown to Edelman 14 times this season and has 14 completions, Amendola he has thrown to 8 times for 7 completions.
