He has great talent, but he did not handle the combine well at all and will fall because of the question marks that are starting to mount with him. That being said, he has top 10 talent, so do you pull the trigger on a troubled talent like this?
I'll be honest. I don't think he was a top 10 talent. First off, he had a very quick rise thanks to the draftniks. But he missed his Bowl game because of disciplinary reasons. And then he didn't look all that great at the Senior Bowl. Then his actions at the combine came across as immature excuses. I think the Pats pass on him. Particularly since Saban does carry some clout with BB.
I actually don't think he falls quite as far as most are predicting. I think he could go as high as #8 to Jacksonville, but no lower than Chicago at #18.
no offense bakes and mayo, but you didn't answer my question. What if he falls to the pats? do you think they would take him IF he fell that far

Yes, they would treat him as the next coming of the falling Wilfork. Mayock quotes the proverb, " Those that won't, are no better than those that can't." I think that definitely applies to a Micheal Johnson. Avoid him like the plague.
Smith has never been criticized as lazy. He may well be immature, and he is an underclassman. The only criticism was his weight. So he attempted to do something about that.
He was benched by Saban, as he is required, for violating a stupid, and probably illegal NCAA rule, about not being able to contact or talk to an Agent. Can you not seek a lawyer's counsel at any time that you desire, or hire one? I believe there is an item in the Bill of Rights about that. (Actually, he could probably make millions in a Court test, but it would interfere with his football career.)
As regards his presence at the combine, that was handled poorly, I admit.
But he did say he was not going to participate, as he was not prepared for the combine events. He was certainly on a diet, and lost more than 18 pounds between the Senior bowl and the Combine, and made sure to be measured and document that fact. So he was doing something, and not just loafing. He informed every one on day one, at the combine, of that. And he would depend on his superb film grades, and his Pro day.
Not being available the next day is an easy mistake that more than likely devolves on his Agent, than him.
He won't be there at #23.

The patriots would draft him in a heartbeat...
Me thinks the Pats would want to know if HIS heart beats. They would hope he'd have the necessary qualities to work hard throughout TC, pre-season, and a very long reg season -- and beyond. Logic says -- the fewer risks the better -- with any first round pick.
Have you finished making enough excuses for Andre Smith yet?
A 1st round pick shouldn't have to hide behind excuses.
Andre Smith was a no show at the combine and ADMITTED to being out of shape at one of the most important NFL evaluation events of the year.
I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole in round 1.
I don't recall Wilfork going through any debacles like Andre Smith, so that's a pretty bad comparison.
what's with the 'me thinks'? you from appalachia or something?
