I hope it helps get you to 1pm
1. Its pretty clear that nothing the Pats do in the next 2 games will be enough. If they win 40-0 it will be hailed by the media as meaningless because the competition is so bad. If they win 21-17, they will ***** about the fact the Pats didn’t score over 30 and moan about the fact the defense gave up 17 points to a rookie QB. It is really a no win situation. Be prepared.
2. This is my annual “they are ALL pretty damned good” speech.
As hard as it may seem, the Pats DO have a chance at being in a competitive game or even losing it. The fact is that EVERY player who manages to survive the gauntlet of being a good enough to even be signed, the OTA’s, and TC, IS a tremendous competitor, a great athlete and an excellent football player. EVERY SINGLE ONE! At 1pm the Pats are going to have to compete against 53 of these athletes, and it WON’T be easy
I know that because the Pats will be facing a rookie QB and a rookie HC, it will be hard NOT to look at this game and to a lesser extent the Jets game ,as a mere extension to the pre-season But we should all still remember how good these guys have to be to play on this level.
3. I’m on record in saying that besides Brady, the key to the success of the Pats offense will be the fact that the Pats will have one of the best OL’s in the league. The Bills have an excellent front 7 and it will a great test to see if my hopes turn out to be reality.
4. One of the great questions I’m sure we are all waiting to see is who will start at RG. Will BB go with the consistency and experience of Dan Connolly, or is today the day that the Marcus Cannon era will begin. I’m OK with the former, but I’ll be really pumped if it’s the latter.
5. I’m pretty sure that we won’t see much of a difference in our punting game with the new punter. Lost among the issue of how strong his leg is, is my concern about his ability to hold for the Ghost. Metzko was a really good holder, a consistent, reliable asset. Allen, IIRC didn’t hold in college, so a key element to our scoring attack is in question. Clearly BB and his staff has seen him work all TC and are comfortable he can do the job, but it still has to be considered one of the real question marks this season
6. FOURTEEN - That’s the number of rookies we have on this team. That’s DOUBLE the usual number of rookies BB has kept in recent years, and a shocking number for a team that been so consistently successful.. Even more surprising since in came in a year when we had fewer draft selections than usual, and most of them came lower in the draft. 7 UDFA’s of which 2 will play a significant role on the offense today make the roster. How often does that happen to a successful and established team. 2 would be a great great accomplishment
What makes this more curious to me is the fact that BB has proven over and over again that he really appreciates the value of having proven vets around the team, yet this year he has decided to take a fairly young team and go even younger.
The point here is that after we finally get all the Tebow and Welker talke out of our systems, this would be an excellent topic for a lengthy discussion of why this happened
7. Things that the mediots will say today that will probably piss me off.
a. There will be speculation by some mediot, that the Pats should have known about Aaron Hernandez prior to the murder of Odin Lloyd. To that I will scream at my TV “BS”.
While there may have been legitimate questions about his character BEFORE he was drafted, for the 3 seasons he played for the team, he didn’t do anything to lead anyone that this horrible event was in his future. By ALL reports he worked hard a practices and in the meeting rooms. He wasn’t a liability in the locker room. He showed up on time, and did his work and was productive on the field.
For all the connections the mediots try and make, as if the Pats had done something wrong, there was never a single story in the media PRIOR to the murder that would have foreshadowed what happened. Believe me if there had been ANY hint of what we have found out since. , Ron Borges would have written it.
As far as anyone knew, for the 3 seasons Hernandez played for the Pats he was a solid contributor both on and off the field. And I take great umbrage to the hypocrites in the media who want to tarnish the Pats for not knowing that Hernandez was going to murder someone. Its just another example of extreme unfair use of 20-20 hindsight. (thanks for allowing this off topic rant)
b. Any comment connecting what Welker did with Denver to the Pats and Amendola. Yes I understand that it’s a legitimate topic, but that still won’t keep me from getting pissed off.
c. When the mediots imply that the Pats are good only because Brady is the QB. It pisses me off when they do that . Football, more than any other team sport, is LESS about the individual plaer and MORE about the team. Yet every week the mediots try and dumb us down in making the game all about the individual rather than the unit.
This isn’t to diminish Brady in any way, but football really is “all about the team”. Its not just a platitude, it’s the truth, and instead of celebrating that fact, it seems the mediots wants us to forget or ignore it.
8. If I were among the bottom 10 players on this opening day roster, I wouldn’t feel too comfortable. I would expect SEVERAL roster moves coming in our future. Most obviously is the addition of another QB to the PS. The Pats may have gone the last few season with only 2 QB’s on the 53, they have never gone into the season without 3 arms available for practices
9. A couple of questions that occurred to me I’d appreciate answered if anyone knows.
a. Did George Winn get signed to anyone’s PS?
b. Did anyone pick up Love after he was released by the Jags
c. who is your top QB hopeful for the Pats PS?
d. BTW- anyone know who the Captains are this year?
10. Just a thought to keep in mind about making any permanent judgements about this team after one game....or even one month. Last season, the Arizona Cardinals were at 4-0 at the end of September, and the talk of the league
enjoy (or not ) and I'll see you all on the flip side.
