I hope it helps get you to 1pm

    1. Its pretty clear that nothing the Pats do in the next 2 games will be enough. If they win 40-0 it will be hailed by the media as meaningless because the competition is so bad. If they win 21-17, they will ***** about the fact the Pats didn’t score over 30 and moan about the fact the defense gave up 17 points to a rookie QB. It is really a no win situation. Be prepared.

    2. This is my annual “they are ALL pretty damned good” speech.

As hard as it may seem, the Pats DO have a chance at being in a competitive game or even losing it. The fact is that EVERY player who manages to survive the gauntlet of being a good enough to even be signed, the OTA’s, and TC, IS a tremendous competitor, a great athlete and an excellent football player. EVERY SINGLE ONE! At 1pm the Pats are going to have to compete against 53 of these athletes, and it WON’T be easy

I know that because the Pats will be facing a rookie QB and a rookie HC, it will be hard NOT to look at this game and to a lesser extent the Jets game ,as a mere extension to the pre-season But we should all still remember how good these guys have to be to play on this level.

    3. I’m on record in saying that besides Brady, the key to the success of the Pats offense will be the fact that the Pats will have one of the best OL’s in the league. The Bills have an excellent front 7 and it will a great test to see if my hopes turn out to be reality.

    4. One of the great questions I’m sure we are all waiting to see is who will start at RG. Will BB go with the consistency and experience of Dan Connolly, or is today the day that the Marcus Cannon era will begin. I’m OK with the former, but I’ll be really pumped if it’s the latter.

    5. I’m pretty sure that we won’t see much of a difference in our punting game with the new punter. Lost among the issue of how strong his leg is, is my concern about his ability to hold for the Ghost. Metzko was a really good holder, a consistent, reliable asset. Allen, IIRC didn’t hold in college, so a key element to our scoring attack is in question. Clearly BB and his staff has seen him work all TC and are comfortable he can do the job, but it still has to be considered one of the real question marks this season

    6. FOURTEEN - That’s the number of rookies we have on this team. That’s DOUBLE the usual number of rookies BB has kept in recent years, and a shocking number for a team that been so consistently successful.. Even more surprising since in came in a year when we had fewer draft selections than usual, and most of them came lower in the draft. 7 UDFA’s of which 2 will play a significant role on the offense today make the roster. How often does that happen to a successful and established team. 2 would be a great great accomplishment

What makes this more curious to me is the fact that BB has proven over and over again that he really appreciates the value of having proven vets around the team, yet this year he has decided to take a fairly young team and go even younger.

The point here is that after we finally get all the Tebow and Welker talke out of our systems, this would be an excellent topic for a lengthy discussion of why this happened

    7. Things that the mediots will say today that will probably piss me off.

    a. There will be speculation by some mediot, that the Pats should have known about Aaron Hernandez prior to the murder of Odin Lloyd. To that I will scream at my TV “BS”.

While there may have been legitimate questions about his character BEFORE he was drafted, for the 3 seasons he played for the team, he didn’t do anything to lead anyone that this horrible event was in his future. By ALL reports he worked hard a practices and in the meeting rooms. He wasn’t a liability in the locker room. He showed up on time, and did his work and was productive on the field.

For all the connections the mediots try and make, as if the Pats had done something wrong, there was never a single story in the media PRIOR to the murder that would have foreshadowed what happened. Believe me if there had been ANY hint of what we have found out since. , Ron Borges would have written it.

As far as anyone knew, for the 3 seasons Hernandez played for the Pats he was a solid contributor both on and off the field. And I take great umbrage to the hypocrites in the media who want to tarnish the Pats for not knowing that Hernandez was going to murder someone. Its just another example of extreme unfair use of 20-20 hindsight. (thanks for allowing this off topic rant)

    b. Any comment connecting what Welker did with Denver to the Pats and Amendola. Yes I understand that it’s a legitimate topic, but that still won’t keep me from getting pissed off. ;)

    c. When the mediots imply that the Pats are good only because Brady is the QB. It pisses me off when they do that . Football, more than any other team sport, is LESS about the individual plaer and MORE about the team. Yet every week the mediots try and dumb us down in making the game all about the individual rather than the unit.

This isn’t to diminish Brady in any way, but football really is “all about the team”. Its not just a platitude, it’s the truth, and instead of celebrating that fact, it seems the mediots wants us to forget or ignore it.

    8. If I were among the bottom 10 players on this opening day roster, I wouldn’t feel too comfortable. I would expect SEVERAL roster moves coming in our future. Most obviously is the addition of another QB to the PS. The Pats may have gone the last few season with only 2 QB’s on the 53, they have never gone into the season without 3 arms available for practices

    9. A couple of questions that occurred to me I’d appreciate answered if anyone knows.

    a. Did George Winn get signed to anyone’s PS?

    b. Did anyone pick up Love after he was released by the Jags

    c. who is your top QB hopeful for the Pats PS?

    d. BTW- anyone know who the Captains are this year?

    10. Just a thought to keep in mind about making any permanent judgements about this team after one game....or even one month. Last season, the Arizona Cardinals were at 4-0 at the end of September, and the talk of the league

enjoy (or not ;) ) and I'll see you all on the flip side.

Rotoworld shows him as a free agent and indicates that he worked out with the Seahawks. I still don't think that the legal/medical staff will allow a 300+ pound player with diabetes.

Go Ken! Now that's some good game day football talk. A few things:
    - On the O Line: We had a thread here about players we're excited to see play this year; I answered Vereen. there are a few other guys I could have answered but one that I should have put was Solder. Excited to see what this beast does.Talent, size and now experience, with some good backs behind him.

-I hear ya on the "no win" perception thing. A big thing to me is that it doesn't matter what numbers Amendola puts up, today or all season. It's how he fits into his team's scheme and helps other players perform better. Even if some fans are intent on believing otherwise - and some media will exploit that - I'm confident BB won't fall into that trap. Just keep winning.

    - I read in Volin's notes today that Allan's coach says he's great at directional kicking and coffin-corner landings. Hope so. that and holding - FGs might be a little more important for a bit here.

    - As an aside and my own observation: I was shocked SHOCKED to hear NFL Network say this morning that the players who caught 75% of the Pats receptions last year aren't playing today. Whaaa ...? When did that happen? ;) Hoping this is the last day we hear all about that.

    - Finally, looking forward to a big day running the ball. I think Brady keeps the streak alive (and yeah, we know; we all care about winning, not stats).

I still disagree with this. I also have Type-2 Diabetes, and take meds, including insulin. What I have learned is that with proper diet and activity, you can certainly slow down and often halt any pernicious effects of this disease.

Certainly reducing weight can and does help, BUT....... exercise, activity and diet are more important.

I would think that the Diabetes and weight wouldn't be an issue with the Patriots considering the amount of training and activity he will incur as a player. They have an excellent nutrition staff as well as physical trainers, and as long as his blood sugars and A1c levels are reasonable, there's no reason to use them as factors against him.

    Respects,

Buffalo will make the choice. Depending on what they choose to try to take away, wither Brady will light it up early or we'll run for 100 yards in the first half.

As a syringe carrying type 2 diabetic myself, I can't disagree at all with you wrote...up to a point. My Diabetes doesn't limit me a all now that its controlled. There is nothing I can't do now that I couldn't do before I was diagnosed. HOWEVER, the issue here isn't can Love play football. Its can love play football at an NFL level, BEFORE he knows the right level of medication, food and exercise that fits him. That my friend and you should know takes some time.

The Pats were right in suggesting he take the year off and get his regimen established before he takes up the game again. Given the intensity of training and playing football, that is not an easy task

Here's my pregame idle thoughts -

Don't fall asleep on EJ Manuel. The Pats have not exactly shutdown rookie and journey-man QBs in recent years. Until I see otherwise, I'm predicting that Manuel will do better than expected, assuming his injury situation doesn't inhibit his performance.

That being said, I like the chances of our defense. We definitely have the NASCAR package to get up field fast as required by today's pass happy NFL. Hopefully we also have the coverage and open field tackling that is required for success.

I'm concerned about the teams performance in Detroit. Our O line got man handled. Was that an anomaly or will our line struggle against physical fronts?

I'm pissed at Dennard for being such an off the field mess. I'd feel really good about our secondary depth knowing we had Dennard and Talib at the corners and Arrington and Ryan in the slot and as backups at the corner. Its likely Dennard will miss time (as he should) and an injury to just one of our CBs makes our secondary a *****sandwich.

Speaking of the secondary, I hope we can get some solid play at safety this year. I think McCourty will be fine. After that, lots of question marks.

No, I hope we keep hearing about it week in and week out.

    As in

"You've got to love what Peyton Manning is doing, but when you talk about MVP the top of the list is Tom Brady. He leads the league in TDs but is doing it without 4 of the 5 guys who caught passes for him in 2012, can you believe it? To endure that type of turnover in the receiver corps and not miss a beat really tells you how special this guy is.

Ok, back to our ESPN HQ to talk more about the Wes Welker bestiality scandal."

Although our breakup with Love was less than cordial, Belichick doesn't care about that stuff. If other teams deem him fit to play, I imagine the Pats would too. Though the potential for Love is limited, being a stout backup who fits what we do is about it in the short term, therefore he could be just what the doctor ordered (pun).

Obvbiously, we need potential starters at DT soon, which might be only accomplished in future drafts.

The NASCAR package typically deploys 3 or 4 Defensive ends.

Are you suggesting we should take Wilfork and/or Kelly off the field? I doubt it, especially given the constant run threat posed by Spiller and old man Fred Jackson.

In 3 and 4 receiver sets I would expect a more conventional 4 man line.

We are only suiting up 3 DTs today so there might be situations where BB does use NASCAR, hopefully only by concerted defensive decision, not by circumstances.

    Nice summary Ken.

I am actually nervous about this game considering the fact that we are going against a rookie QB and a rookie HC. Am I right that our past performance has not been that good when going against rookie QBs probably because we didn't have enough information to study his tendencies and abilities?

And not sure how many regular season games will it take for our O to get comfortable with the new players/schemes and without Gronk and other inactives today.

So, I will not be surprised if we lose this one. Yucks, hate to admit that. :(

Mildly surprised that Ken didn't mention that possibilty in the first paragraph even though he alludes to it in the second.

After all, if that happens, the media will bury us quickly. In fact, irrespective of the outcome of this game, I wish the media burys us and we fly under the radar.

    End of rant.

Let our season begin! GO PATS!! :)

If/when we do see it, I hope its in obvious passing situations.

My biggest concern is Spiller getting traction/confidence, opening up easy throws for Manuel via play action.

Luckily the Super Bowl isn't won in the media narrative. I'd watch the games on mute and avoid any pregame shows if I could. Just remember that ESPN and the networks create a narrative that helps the sports-industrial complex which exists to exploit fans, taxpayers, and players to put even more money in the pockets of people with a lot of money to begin with. They're just NFL lickspittles.
