    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Best way to get a nasty, hard-to-treat infection these days is be in a hospital. Antibiotic resistance has gotten nasty. My father's final days were afflicted by MRSA (definitely resistant), my mother's by sepsis (less clear). My wife had MRSA for a while (not hospital-based) as well.

Didn't Mickey Mantle have a problems with an infection that cut his career short??? Osteomylitis??

With modern medicine, shouldn't this have gotten figured out by now??

Then - Go to the hospital to get healthy.

Now - Go to the hospital to get sicker.

People laughed at the support and healing qualities of wrapping the injured forearm in a huge kielbasa when I suggested it.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Because you are recalling, consciously or not, all the news in the last twenty years about infections that we can't beat with our current antibiotics. And that news has gotten more intense as time goes on.

Most biotech companies of any scale have teams looking for entirely new ways to attack bacteria. NIH is into it big time as well (although the sequester is taking a toll up there, but don't get me started on that).

Gronk may be able to beat this, or he may never play football again. The odds are in his favor, but this is no sure thing.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Many of my closest friends are doctors and to a one they tell me the same thing: GET OUT OF THE HOSPITAL AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE!

We are pumping out filthy food supply full of antibiotics to keep the animals alive (barely) and fat in horrid conditions until they can be slaughtered. Because of this, we're building a whole new gang of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. Doctors are terrified of this.

What is going on with Gronk is unconscionable and should be a wake-up call to everyone. If a bull of a man, in prime physical health, can get hammered like this, what of the sick and elderly?

I'm very pessimistic about this situation for Gronk. He should not still be having problems.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

The title of the thread and, more specifically, the article, is misleading since his infection was reported in February and no new setback is reported now. Specifically, no evidence is presented that the infection did not respond to treatment. He is being treated and the outcome will not be known until the surgery to remove the plate.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Thanks for the snark...don't think I went anywhere near there, but if it makes you feel better to exaggerate for effect, go for it.

And I just reread the article carefully - it is a misleading headline...Mack Herron's got it right. There's no reason to believe the infection is still there at this point.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Thanks for catching this. That's a huge difference. If the second round of treatment wasn't working, it would be much worse.

I should have known better than to just trust the thread and the Herald.

In case of a slow news day, look to the archives? If Gronk for some reason is not ready to go on opening day, that does give Ballard some playing time (see what he can do).

Good job highlighting the facts vs hysteria.
Did not the great Tom Brady have post op infection problems as well?
This is not the forum for detailed discussion but the science of medicine recognizes that we have a major problem looming over profligate misuse of antibiotics.

Worst case he is not ready for the start of the season? I'll take that all day. Less opportunity for the big guy to further injure himself.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

You missed the key quote from the article:

So it looks like the infection may have been eradicated, but the doctors don't know for sure.

This looks like "Tom Brady may miss the 2009 season non-news news story 2.0". A lot of worst case scenarios being passed along as if it is assured of happening.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

I did not miss it. This course of antibiotics is standard therapy for the previously reported infection. There is no evidence as to whether they did or did not work. Removal of the plate is also standard treatment. There is no indication that any of this was new or not known in Feb. What is the new setback? None is reported.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

BTW, if Gronk's forearm is completely healed, why would he need a new plate in his arm? I know a lot of people leave the hardware in their bodies after a broken bone is healed, but I have never heard anyone actually replace plates and pins with other plates and pins after a bone is healed.

Why would a plate in his forearm even be necessary at this point? I thought the only reason a doctor even leaves a plate in someone's arm is because the patient doesn't want to have the surgery to remove the hardware.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

This. (I've never used that term before. I think I've missed the bus on it by now. anyways...) Yeah, my strategy would be to hold off Gronk-o-rama until after Thanksgiving.

(Jackson2 putting 50 Yard Line in the proverbial bunker was funny. I'll throw in a tin foil hat ta boot. "I know a lot of doctors and they all say to me..." Classic. You shoulda seen all of the people who ran over here with stethoscopes around their necks and weighed in on the Gronk injury when it first happened last season. 50 Yard Line's take on microbiology was reminiscent of that.)

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Sorry, I didn't mean to make that accusatory. I just wanted to point out the ridiculous of the article in that the infection appears to be completely healed, but the doctors aren't 100% sure and how this article is taking the worst case scenario and makes it sound like it is the likely outcome.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Very very true. The great irony is that the WORST place in the world for anyone who is already sick/wants to remain infection free is to be IN a hospital. The general public has no idea how out-of-control hospital born infections are. Very few people come out of hospitals in better shape than when they went in.
    Sad but true.
Confident Gronk will overcome this. Question is how long and what type of permanent damage is possible.

Yes. As another poster said, let's all wait for a "real" news source to report the story. The Herald, whose site I have proudly not visited and for whose print edition I have not payed a penny since the infamous article by Tomass, does not qualify as such.

This is just one more reason to confine that "news"paper to the tabloid trash heap.

    Re: Gronk Suffers another setback

Borges never misses a chance to kick the Pats in the jewels. Guregian must have been desperate for someone to pay attention to her (not that she's bad but largely unnoticed) to add her name to this 'work.' The two of them ought to be ashamed for even publishing such if/maybe/maybe/maybe/if trash, but considering the paper they are employed by it's little surprise.
