How nice of you to find one of Andre's 4 tackles on the season.

yeah I am not sure how we are 5-3 without his 4 tackles and 1 sack.

Since Carter is just now getting healthy and has probably played less than 30 snaps, he probably wouldn't heve helped the Pats so far this year. But since he is just getting healthy and looks better and better each time on the field, he certainly would have been able to help the Pats down the stretch.

I'm willing to bet Andre Carter won't have nearly half as productive a season as Rob Ninkovich is having.

You might be right.
But, it would probably be comparing apples and oranges.
Carter is not being used as a starter in Oakland. He is being used more as a pass rush specialist. He is generally being used in Nickel situations and to give Shaughnessy a break. I think if you want to bet that Ninkovich will have more sacks/pressures than Carter over the rest of the season, I would take Carter on that bet.

He's cleared waivers.

If you mean Berry, isn't he a safety?

They have Flowers as a $50 million corner. They have Berry as the high end safety. Paying Carr the $50 million would have led to a defensive backfield with two $50 million dollar corners, and that would be on top of the team needing to shell out a huge deal for Berry in a year or two.

I'll send BB a tweet, text or facebook message and convince him to sign Routt.

Oops. I guess I forgot about Flowers. Good call!

Whatever he did, is it worst than fighting teammates, pistol wipping dudes, and then shooting at them? If it's not, then sign the beast.

LaCanfora is reporting that Miami, Arizona, and Detroit among others are interested. If the Patriots are among the "others" interested, let's hope Routt likes winning.

I would think that if the Patriots were among the "others" (and LaCanfora knew it) they would have been mentioned by name. The potential of Routt going to NE seems to me to be a much bigger story than his going to any of the above mentioned teams.

Of course I recognize that I am a homer and think that almost anything the Pats do is headline worthy... ;)

Bill The Mad (Genius): "That's our best offer. Are you in, or out?"

Stanford Routt: "I thought we'd been introduced. I'm Routt. Who's "In"??"

Bill The Mad (Genius): "Men who have what it takes to make a Commitment and follow through on it. Also: people who dress in the latest fashionable styles. But you haven't answered my question."

Stanford Routt: "Sorry...What was your question?"

Bill The Mad (Genius): "Are you in, or out?"

Stanford Routt: "I told you: I'm Routt. Stanford Routt. And who's this "In" person that your keeping referring to??"

Bill The Mad (Genius): "Fashion models, usually. Hip DJ's. Fresh faces in Hollywood and smarmy Bloggers. Are you avoiding answering my question??"

Repeat as needed.

Routt visited the Lions but left without a contract, and is reportedly visiting with an "anonymous" AFC team. The Dolphins, once reportedly in the running, have been rumored to be out.

The Buffalo game underscored the need for some decent press-man CBs in order to keep Devin McCourty at FS. Dennard is promising but still a rookie. Talib will hopefully be solid, but he has some risk, and a 3rd CB would provide insurance in case of injury and also relegate Arrington/Cole to the dime/ST role. That would also allow them to use Chung/Wilson/Gregory as more forward/downhill safeties, and to let the front 7 attack more.

As I suggested elsewhere, if I were BB I'd very quietly sneak Routt in for dinner at the Ground Round, and have something like the following conversation with him:

"Hey Stanford, thanks for coming. This place is a dump, but the burgers are good. Go wild.

So I'm going to cut right to the chase. How would you like to get a Super Bowl ring? Look, let's not mince words. You've been cut twice already this season as a starting CB by crappy teams, and you're due to cash in $11M. Not bad money. Do you really need more? Does you really need to be the starting CB for another mediocre or lousy team? Be realistic: Detroit, Tampa Bay, Arizona, Miami and the Jets aren't going to wn the Super Bowl this year, without you or with you. I probably can't offer you as much money as some of those other teams. But there's only one team in the NFL that is one decent press-man CB away from a Lombardi Trophy, and you're looking at the guy who runs it.

Here's the deal. I want to offer you a one year deal for the remainder of 2012. We can kick the money around, and maybe throw in an option if you want, but it's not going to be for a ton of money, and it's basically a one year deal for the next 7 games. I can't promise that you'll be a "starter", but as long as you play decent press-man coverage you'll be one of my top 3 CBs, which means you'll see plenty of defensive snaps. The top 3 guys will all get plenty of playing time. In reality you, Aqib Talib and Alfonzo Dennard will all share time. Sometimes you'll be outside, sometimes you'll be in the slot. Sometimes you'll start, sometimes you won't. It doesn't matter. If that's important to you, don't come here. If the money is important to you, dont come here. But if you want to win a Ring, come here.

Having 3 press-man CBs will let me move Devin McCourty to deep FS, let Pat Chung and Tavon Wilson play more up front, and keep Kyle Arrington and Marquice Cole for depth, dime and ST work. Having McCourty watching the deep part of the field and 3 guys who can bump receivers off their routes will allow me to unleash the dogs up front. With that kind of secondary and my current front 7 and run defense, I should have a top 10 defense, maybe better. And with my offense that kind of defense, I think we can match up with any team in the NFL. There are never any guarantees, but I like our chances for a Super Bowl as well as anyone's.

So what do you say? You've already made $11 million this year. You'd be a free agent in 2013, so we could decide whether this is a good fit, or you would be no worse off than you are now as far as picking your next team. And you might have some nice hardware on your figure to show them when you're shopping.

Can I have some of those fries?"

Why "anonymous"??

The Patriots are one of only a very few AFC teams that I see maybe wanting to keep things on the down low.

After watching yet another season MVP performance by Fitzpatrick, I'm almost ready to sign off on anybody if they can elevate our secondary to at least average.

I don't know why. The fact that the AFC team still hasn't been publicly announced makes me wonder if it could be the Pats, who like to do things quietly. And after today, BB may feel an increased need for an addition CB who can play press-man.

There's no way. This D is so young with a lack of cohesiveness - I don't see adding TWO new starters helping midway in the season.

2 thoughts on that:

1. Adding another veteran to the secondary would probably help, not hurt, given the overall level of experience.

2. Playing man coverage doesn't require that much cohesiveness from the individual CBs. It's more a question of covering your man.
