As I coach I agree but as a player I would not scorn that attitude, which I felt was thoroughly missing from our defense at certain points last season.
Agree, you can usually clean up a hitter.

The Chargers released a statement regarding Junior Seau's visit to New England. The statement:

"Junior left a message for Chargers President Dean Spanos today alerting him that he may sign a contract and play for the New England Patriots. If in fact he chooses to continue his playing career, we wish him good health and the best of luck this season. Junior’s place in the Chargers’ Hall of Fame awaits him when his career is over.”

Did you see any inside linebackers that tackled the guy with the ball?

These guys are all classroom All-Pros. I want to see some freaking hitting out there.

You can't freaking tackle "in theory".
What are you talking about RayClay? I have no idea what you post is trying to point out at me.

I wasnt talking about a player. As a player we need more players that want to hit and want to be aggressive. AKA the Rodney Harrison factor. Those are players you need on this team year in and year out. Lockerrom leaders. guys who yell at the top of their lungs on the sidelines to pump the other players around him up. To go out there and be aggressive and make the offense be well aware or where you are. As a coach Seau is not on the top of my list. Guys like Anthony Pleasent ( DL i know) and Roman Phifer are.

I don't have that kind of connections to "ask any team he has played with". As to telling young guys to tackle the guy with the ball and hit hard, that sounds like a pretty good philosophy.

In all seriousness though, do you really think the guy approaches the game on that simple a level? Not saying he doesn't, I honestly couldn't tell you what his football insights are. But I could accept a seasoned linebacker that plays with aggression and tackles the guy with the ball.
Well hes a smart player from all the sources i here but he cant translate that into teaching. He approaches the younger guys with a more mental attitude of how to approach the game on the field. Which is great dont get me wrong but as a classroom teacher telling guys where they need to be and why? Ugh....lets get him back into that first classroom again and make sure he doesnt see the teaching door.

I don't care if Seau is a teacher or not. What I would expect out of him is a useable ILB on early downs and a shot of enthusiasm and desire for a ring.

I am by no means trying to start a rumor here, but the first thought that came to my mind when I heard about Seau was - just how long is Bruschi expected to be out?

Like everyone else, I like the idea of bolstering the linebacking corps with veteran experience; but that question just kept nagging at me. Hearing the Pioli was in Dallas didn't help things either.

It certainly is a reasonable concern to have, but during the team's LB "golden age" if you will, the Pats had a three player rotation to fill the two spots of OLB and the two spots of ILB in our base defense. Outside the rotation of trusted LB's was Wille, Vrabel, and Colvin, while inside it was the Ted's and Roman Phifer. Right now outside we have Vrabel and Colvin......and Brown? Banta-Cain? Woods? It's still unclear who will fill the third spot. Inside we have Tedy...and Gardner? Beisel? Davis? Vrabel? This ideal rotation of three solid players is also unclear. The Pats are still looking for the players to play alongside their starters, not necessarily to replace them. There are too many questionable players currently on our roster at LB to think that bringing in other LB's means we are trying to replace our starters. It could very well be we are trying to replace our back-ups and dissapointments.

I guess I'm kind of ignoring your "shouldn't be a coach thing" since we're not really getting him to be a coach, sorry.

I'm deleting the rest of my post since you get it even though I wasn't responding to what you said. My bad.

We need to tackle guys running up the middle. Refining how we do it can come later, but we have to do it.

Tomase got an extra funny bit at the end of BB's musings on Seau's retirement.

Q: Do you think he was overrated? [Laughter]

BB: Whose rating was that?

Q: There were different lists and rankings and a few that said he was overrated in 1995.

BB: Yeah, I missed those lists so I don’t know. I’m not really sure who is on them and who wasn’t. Well, if you e-mail me those lists, I’ll peruse through them and see which guys didn’t look overrated.:D

You're probably right. I certainly don't believe that he is being brought in with doing duty this year and possibly being a future coaching candidiate for the LB corps. Just tossing out there that he has voiced an interest in it.

One thing that is obvious is his love for the game. 37 years old, made oodles of money, could be in (hometown) San Diego in some cushy local gig making more money, but this guy wants to play ball or coach. Never held out, did wonders outside of the game in the local community, and played every down with intensity and passion for the game.

Some have said he isn't a "BB" kind of guy or a "Patriot kind of guy", personally I think those very reasons above make him one.

I realize this but I somewhat quickly disregarded the idea of Seau becoming a LB coach for the Pats because I think the idea is a little silly. We are pursuing him as a player. It seems very far fetched and somewhat irrelevant to discuss his coaching potential on the team. In a way I was supporting your point because I dismissed the idea quickly, knowing it was not going to happen for various reasons, including the ones you have previously mentioned. I completely agree that a coach has to be much more than a great motivator to be successful.

However I think it was appropriate that the fact was brought up simply that Seau had expressed an interest in coaching before. This perhaps illustrates he does have a more X's and O's appreciation and understanding of the game, which would logically make him more of a "Belichick guy." However to make the leap that he might end up being a coach on this team seems premature, and just that, a leap.

When he does sign. I hope:

1) He stays healthy emough to last an entire season
2) Him and Harriosn can really be the heavy hitters right up the middle. You know Harrison gave Belichick a glowing recommendation
3) I hope he becomes our Ted Johnson LB'er, in which i mean on third and short or whatever and short he comes in and makes a stop on the run. AKA a big run stuffer.

With that said knowing this team will compete for the title also must boost his excitement level.

So he could be a great haul. Could be the key word.

Thanks.

Getting off point here for a second though but doesnt the thought of third and short with Harrison and Seau in the middle kind of make you feel better than Wilson Beisel?

Makes me feel better.

The idea is certainly appealing.....however I must prevent myself from getting too excited as both Harrison (don't worry patsnut, I have plenty of faith in Harrison) and Seau have injury and age questions, and we don't even know if Seau will make the team. But if it works...hell yeah...

If they sign Seau he will make the team. Why would they bother to sign a guy two weeks into camp if they were just going to cut him a week and a half later?

He'll make it.

That means Beisel might get the boot.

Expounding on the Peter King report:

-Will have physical tomorrow

-Deal is 1 year @ $1 million, with lucrative incentives.

Good Lord NO!!!!!!! This guy sucks and will make Chad Brown look like LT in his prime. No thanks, hopefully BB tell this guy to buy some Cialis and get on his rocker.

The only way Chad brown could look like LT in his prime, is if everybody was sipping the cooking sherry as heavily as you obviously have been.

$1mm is not a lot of money, but I thought we'd be seeing Shanle coming here, not some washed up overrated has-been that is going to be a pylon on defense. This is crap.
