49ers | A. Smith to take pay cut
Tue, 10 Mar 2009 10:42:40 -0700

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers announced that they have agreed with QB Alex D. Smith on a pay reduction as part of a new two-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "We have reached an agreement with Alex and his agent to keep him as a member of the San Francisco 49ers," general manager Scot McCloughan said. "Alex expressed a deep interest to remain with the team and that feeling was mutual."

Depending on the paycut, this is a good deal for Smith. He knows he's not cutting it with San Fran, and is going to make more money on a reduced version of his original deal than he would in free agency if he was cut.

We have a guy named Tom.

Use the NFL Forum for this kinda news.

This dude could be the luckiest guy in the league. How he still manages to even be on a roster is a testiment to how solid his agent must be.

I was going to say that this sounded noble of him - but realized that it was entirely to his benefit, as well as the 49ers.

I'd hate to think what the media out here would "do" to a player picked #1 overall who ended up with as much of a bust label as Smith currently has stamped on him.
