NFL Offseason Cuts Thread

I'm not sure that I understand what you're suggesting. Is it that Anquan Boldin's skill set equates to seeing lots of jump balls? Is that even true? Particularly in our offense? With Belichick and Brady? I don't remember seeing that in SF, or any point when he was in ARZ. Perhaps you witnessed a couple of "jump ball Joe" moments in BAL that is skewing your opinion?

His last 3 seasons (all with SF):

85 receptions
83 receptions
69 receptions

All he'd have to do is act as another Givens, Llyod, LaFell, etc--although he'd certainly have more physicality and experience than any of them.

Boldin doesn't get much separation but is as good at fighting for the ball and winning it as they get. I don't think that's what they need or will go after. I don't really see them getting rid of LaFell because it would cost more to replace him, and that's whose position he would take.

That has nothing to do with anything I said. No one is sitting here playing crystal ball with what position will be hit the hardest by injury. That doesn't mean you don't try and upgrade in every area possible in the offseason.

You could easily cut LaFell, which has a high probability of happening, and replace him with Colston or another season vet.

Swapping out LaFell for Colston will not make any other area of the team weaker, by any stretch of the imagination.....

I didn't know Colston was available. If healthy, I'd be interested.

According to Schefter the Redskins will tag Cousins.

I don't like the way that Hightower limped to the end of the last 2 seasons. I fear that his shelf-life as a
productive player, especially at the cap hit it would cost to re-sign him, is not as long as some here would
like to imagine.

Upshaw is 1/10th the player that Hightower is.

It may cost more to replace LaFell but he sucks and couldn't catch a cold.

He was fine in 2014. The Patriots have to decide whether they think he'll be more 2014 or 2015 going forward.

LaFell is an enigma. Really helpful in winning a ring yet pathetic this season.
Injury? whatever? or reversion to form?

Dobson unless he shows poor off season conditioning attitude is cheap enough to be worth a training camp.

Give Dobson another year then cut bait if doesn't work out again

Dobson's in the final year of his deal, and I doubt he'll be around for it, unless he shows up as a completely different player from what we've seen in the past 2 seasons. They can't afford to carry him, as has been, for another year. They need to get the OWR situation fixed.

Almost certainly keepers, based upon talent/situation/Patriots actions:
Edelman
Martin

Could quite logically and reasonably be gone:
LaFell
Amendola

Who really gives a ****, unless they pull lightning out of their ass:
The stiffs

That's not really tenable.

Yea Dobson's last chance at being a part of this team is in training camp, because if he doesn't progress and be the player they drafted him to be, then he'll be looking for another team to sign him after he's cut

Not another year unless unexpectedly he really impresses in training camp. I'm simply saying give him camp IF and only if he impresses with off season preparation. Anything less than a full effort, don't waste your time.
And even if so, his first regular season weeks he'll be on the bubble as BB shuffles the roster.
In the perfect world he'd be a numbers victim as BB had signed better WRs.
Yeah. I know, I know.

2014 was a better indication of LaFell's potential than 2015. By the time he got back from his foot surgery, the offensive line was in chaos and Brady was throwing with blitzers in his face, and Lewis was gone. The last third of the 2015 season was just a mess. The combination of factors made LaFell's return tough to judge.

I hope the Patriots land a top shelf outside the numbers receiver who could keep a corner and a safety occupied consistently. It doesn't have to be cap killer, just a guy who could give the Patriots 5 catches a game and 900 or so yards. A guy like Jermaine Kearse might be able to do that.

Rod Streater,Justin Hunter,Marvin Jones
Trade for Josh Gordon
If camp opened up with Dobson,Streater,Tyms, and a rookie were vying for the deep threat slot that wouldnt be terrible.
However would like to move draft capital and or Chander Jones to get a stud.
However the most important piece to add remains a Pittsburgh receiver scout.

Is there another thread regarding this subject where it's just news and not a lot of comments/noise?

Yeah, I check this thread a lot to get the scoop. It'd be nice if we had a news thread separated with the free agency talk thread

Much as I was a Dobson supporter, I have to agree with this. He should come to camp in the best football shape of his life and with a thousand jugs hours behind him. he's worth keeping if he can produce at a high level, but since it's his last year on his deal, the stakes and bar for him are higher than the last two years.

While I'd like to think you are correct in thinking that 2014 is the better indication, the numbers don't really bear out that position. Like you, I'm hoping that's because of the injuries more than a return to his true level of play.

Because of the way the league works, there haven't been a lot of cuts yet.
