Steve Smith Cut. Sign him now

13 Years on the same team... Horrible Teammate.....

Panthers are targeting Hakeem Nicks who is from Charlotte ( not that it matters)

Smith was due to make 7 mill this year

He went to School there Nicks is one of my FA binkies.

This is the deepest WR draft in ages. Drafting a good WR should be the solution not Steve Smith. I'd rather get DL/OL help for that money and focus on WR in the draft. This system is hard to learn and I don't want an Ochocinco pt2.

One rental in Revis is enough. Smith is 35 and we don't know when his legs are gone.

I don't like making the argument often that, "player X wants a ring so he should go to a contender." But, Steve Smith is 35 and probably only has 1-2 good years left. He really should sign with the Seahawks, the Broncos to be Peyton's new BS 4th option, or the Pats if he wants any chance at a ring.

Your premise is sound but the conclusion is not. He's 35 and only has a couple good years (and one payday) left. He should go to whoever pays him the most.

This is true of just about any football player for what it's worth.

Smith is 34 years old a wants a Ring. He doesn't need the money and he is not a horrible teamate. He wants to play the slot. Works for me.

35 and 1/2 on day one of the season.

He's also 5'9".

The Lafell kid from the same team is 8 years younger and his production (while still not that of Smith last year - but not far behind) is increasing while Smith's is decreasing. Plus his YPC is higher than Smith's and he would be less of a cap hit.

Just say no to Stevie and hopefully BB can make it look good so that the price tag for the Ravens can be driven up.

So you're ranking us third favorite now?

One could argue that with the injured players we have returning plus Revis instead of Talib makes us the favorite or #2 behind Seattle but hard to argue with the end results last year which would say Seattle 1 Denver 2 and us 3 or 4 (gotta consider San Fran). However you shape it I think there is a decent gap between these 4 and the next best teams with the saints imo probably coming in at 5.

For the record my bias makes say we are 1.

He hates the Pats and I hate him. No thanks

Steve Smith vs. His Teammates

Let’s get this out of the way first: Steve Smith beat the crap out of three of his teammates. In 2002 he got in a fight with fellow receiver Guilian Gary. Later that same year, he broke the nose of another receiver, Anthony Bright, during a film session. He was charged with assault for that altercation. Five years later, he again broke a teammate’s nose; this time it was cornerback Ken Lucas.

The account of the Bright fight is pretty horrifying, with reports suggesting that Smith became enraged with Bright after the practice squad player asked for a play to be shown again, and then jumped him after the lights were turned out during a film session (“all hell broke loose”). Bright wound up suing Smith in 2004, claiming that the fight ruined his NFL career.

Okay, that's eye-opening. I did not realize that history. I knew he was a tough sob, but didn't realize that level of violence against his own teammates.

I said "transformative," but that wasn't what I had in mind...

Edelman or Sanders, please.

Terrific talent.
Excellent performance over the years: led the league in virtually every important receiver stat for a couple of years a few years ago.
35 when training camp opens this year.
Bottom line for me: A great add, but I don't see the Pats going more than a year and not at top money.

What aspect of his game was off last year? Do you think it was because of his age?

The fact that he’s “old” is good, many GMs will discount him because of it. As far as him “hating” the Patriots, I think he probably hates any team he’s not on, which is fine by me.

Ya but WTF do you know?

Haven't you heard ... He's too old, He's too short, He hates the Pats, He's a Money Grubber and He's a Horrible teammate.

The Ravens have reportedly emerged as the favorite to sign free agent WR Steve Smith.

I'll Take a tough vet that doesn't take any shyt the more the better. Steve Smith as tough a competitor as there is. Adding another rookie isn't the answer. Don't know why anyone would think that's a solution considering the team they would be walking onto. We may get 3-4 starts out of them toward the end of the season before they disappear in the playoffs in favor of more reliable targets.

I honestly don't care how many jags he punched in the face. Jordan punched John Paxson's lights out too, seemed to work out.

All I know is Smith can play football, is one tough SOB and has an awesome set of hands.

Good.

Let THEM pay to watch Flacco lob his jump balls to a 5'9" WR.

Flacco is the absolute WORST QB to be throwing to this guy.

The Basketball Team WR corps won SB XLVII.

If he told Talib "Ice up, son", then Aqib could now tell HIM "Block out, son". :D

Getting Chandler as a pass catching TE would be better IMO. LaFells(sp?), or a WR in the draft will hedge against Dobson having problems. If we can sign Edleman this is a moot point.

Remember when you bring in a Receiver they need to get in sync with Brady and learn the playbook, this has been a steep learning curve, we just went through the learning curve with the 3 rookies who just started 'getting it' and Brady's trust. I would like to see the team take advantage of that.

My FA priorities are getting Brandon Browner for SS, Woodyard for the LB rotation, Resign Fletcher, and getting a DLman to take some of the reps from Ninko and Chandler J.

So, you must be OK with his being an obnoxious in-house agitator with anger issues (at 5-foot-9 and 35 years old). I seriously doubt the Patriots are willing to go there.

I agree - - except for the Chandler at TE.

Get Browning/Woodyard and Edelman now that we know Revis' cap number is several million dollars less this year than we originally thought last niight and restructure Wilfork.

For TE, I am going to defer to the posters here who know the draft field (I don't research or watch college football) who keep telling me there is a great TE (like Jace Amaro or the Seferian-Jenkins guy) who will fall to the Pats. If that can be done, do it.

There's some risk with Smith but the upside outweighs them imo. He's still a really good receiver and he has a quality that pretty much every championship team needs in that he is a tough tough player who leaves it all on the field. Given the patriots needs at the receiver position i would take the chance and think he could be used interchangeably with Amendola as both can play inside and out. I say sign him if the money is reasonable. I would love to see him against Talib in the play-offs.

You are probably right about the Patriots not being willing go there, but let the record show that I would have no objections if they did. The rewards are worth the risk. This guy is a truly remarkable player and his skills (ability to get open, great hands) are not likely to disappear even in his mid-thirties.
