I am convinced Goddell is an idiot

I guess that you have no reponse other than the media made him do it and the media doesn't let him punish any one else. I don't take objection to the punishment meted out to the Pats if the same punishment is given to every team for rules violations. That is the fair and unbiased behavior to be expected in the commissioner. If Goodell lacks the cajones to stand up to the media and be fair and unbiased in his punishment, he is unfit for the job. Frankly I do not see any difference from his treatment of the Pats and the rantings of Greg Easterbrook who apparently you feel he has to cater to.

The media didn't MAKE him do it. He chose to do it. His decision was based heavily on the damage done by this incident to the perceived integrity of the game.

I would also say that the media did NOT manufacture the crisis. In this instance they provided a genuine reflection of the views of non-Patriot fans of the NFL.

As far as Goddell standing up to the media, I think that Goddell should DO HIS JOB. That means grow the NFL. It is NOT his job to be fair. It is even less his job to impose his sense of fairness on the media. Goodell's job is to grow the NFL as much as possible. Any lingering perception that NFL games are being rigged is a very serious threat to that goal.

Finally, I will say (with the approval of fans of 31 other teams I am sure) that Greg Easterbrook is an idiot.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Even a consistently paranoid man is right occasionally:

Nice grabbing a quotation out of context to feebly support your point and attempt to slander a great man.

From 1920 no less. I guess you intended to mislead the casual reader with thinking it was written in the context of Hitler rather than the russian revolution.

please note he was talking about COMMUNISTS (Lenin/Stalin/Trotsky) as Jews who ABANDONED THEIR FAITH in favor of communism
have forsaken the faith of their forefathers, and divorced from their minds all spiritual hopes of the next world. .... for the most part atheistical Jews.

Zionism versus Bolshevism

Some of the parts you conveniently left out (like the TITLE - only including the subtitle):

Zionism versus Bolshevism: A Struggle for the Soul of the Jewish People

............Some people like Jews and some do not; but no thoughtful man can doubt the fact that they are beyond all question the most formidable and the most remarkable race which has ever appeared in the world.

...........In politics their support has been given, ... they have been among the staunchest upholders of friendship with France and Great Britain.

..........

EDIT: I am not going to debate Churchill's racism here. Somebody can start a thread somewhere else and we can go at it there if you want.

NFL orders clubs: Show fantasy stats at stadiums this year

Starting with tonight's Green Bay Packers-New Orleans Saints season opener, the NFL is directing all 32 clubs to display real-time fantasy football stats at all home games for the new 2011 season, says league spokesman Brian McCarthy.

Previously, it was up to individual clubs to decide if they wanted to show player stats from out-of-town games on their scoreboards rather than focusing on their own. Not any more.

The NFL is reaching out to millions of fantasy players who feel somewhat cut off while attending live games. Many fantasy players already use mobile devices to keep in touch with how their players and teams are doing.

But the NFL wants fans at live games to feel as plugged in as they would be on their couch at home. So NFL headquarters will be shooting all teams real-time fantasy stats -- and directing them to post on video boards for fans in the stands

Jbru:

fair enough. I also have no interest in debating the point. This is a football forum. (& more importantly Pats forum) :D

Folks can go to the source url and decide for themselves (IF they even CARE). I just didnt feel i could let your post hang there unanswered w/o an opportunity for evenhandedness.

And this is a good idea ????????????

So the fantasy football freak can ignore yelling at the 3rd down and short play on the field in favor of tracking a player stats MID-GAME??

Last time I played FFL (years ago) you had to lock your roster on Wed and couldn't touch it til Mon night game was over. That means YOU CANT IMPACT ANYTHING BY LOOKING ON GAMEDAY!!!! Essentially your team can go to sleep for 4 days and NOTHING IS DIFFERENT.

Not to mention the stupidity of directing all 32 teams to do something that their display screens may or may not be logistically setup to do. 48 hours before kickoff. SMOOTH MOVE COMMISSH.

GOODELL SUCKS. HIRE C. RICE I tell you.

It's really unfortunate a mod started this mess of a thread. Otherwise I guarantee you another mod would have moved it to the NFL or Political forum or locked it by now...

Ian should consider adding a Paranoia formum they won't use one of these days...

FWIW Goodell just negotiated an 8 year broadcasting rights extension with ESPN through 2021 that according to Peter King will add $13M to the salary cap alone in 2014. What an idiot...

And is there any evidence that you needed more than 10 monkeys in a room randomly typing to successfully "negotiate" a larger contract with the media for the #1 TV audience generating product on the market?

I agree. At a live game, it would seem counterproductive for the home team to have its fans worrying about the game stats of a #3 WR in a game in the other conference, instead of focusing on making noise for their own team.

If you want to play FF (as I know a lot of us do), fine. Just leave it alone for the 3 hours you're at a LIVE FOOTBALL GAME, for which you've most likely paid serious coin.

Relative to the old deal, its not that impressive, effectively a 6.35% per year increase (plus ESPN gets substantially expanded highlights and electronic rights).

This probably reflects how ridiculous the old ESPN contract was. I hope to see substantially larger increases from the NFL's other television contracts.

One thing I would like to know: what provisions (if any) are there for additional payments in the event of an 18 game season. (Because that isn't happening without the ability to dangle big bucks in front of the players).

He went off unprepared in his attempt to make hitting on the football field a bad thing. Now a finger to a QBs helmet is a penalty and a fine, and DBs are afraid to touch a WR.
His Holier than Thou approach to hold a league of mostly 20 to 30 year olds to his own moral judgment in their personal life has been an abject failure, as he makes snap decisions creates precedent then cannot match future offenses to the precedent he set.
Lately he decides to suspend a player based on his being suspended in college. When it is found out that this creates a terrible precedent he lies about the reason.
Now Jim Tressell VOLUNTEERS to work for free in the Colts booth, and since he suspended Pryor someone complains about it, and now Tressell is suspended.
How is Pryor not suspended for his college suspension, but for "Fing with the draft" yet Tressell is suspended (from a non paying job) for his college suspension?

Goddell is painting himself into a corner with his decisions that he refuses to think through.

Oh yeah, and apparently he is responsible for the NFL being a league that can't hit once a week every week to be prepared for games.

You know what would be awesome Andy? If your post weren't completely counter to the facts.

The Colts suspended Tressel, not Goodell.

Wait, what? The Colts could have suspended Goodell but suspended Tressel instead? ;)

But seriously, while it's true that it was Indy, and not Goodell, that suspended Tressel, the fact is that Goodell himself said that he would have taken that action had the Colts not done so.

Roger Goodell was ready to discipline Indianapolis Colts' Jim Tressel - ESPN

"NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday that he would have suspended Jim Tressel if the Indianapolis Colts didn't make him sit out games to start the 2011 season....'I think it was clear that if they didn't take an appropriate action, I would have taken appropriate action," Goodell said.'"

So, true, Goodell didn't suspend Tressel. But he admitted he *would* have, if the Colts hadn't. For whatever that's worth.

Funny, I heard Goodell on Mike & Mike say that had the Colts not acted, HE would have made the suspension

So the Colts hire Tressel and like a day later they suspend him for 6 games? I say, I say, hmmmmm.
