Re: Adam Sch. reports : Matt Cassel to Chiefs ! [merged]

Per the draft value chart, #34 = 560 points. That could move us up in the first round from our current #24 (740 pts) to #10. Oh, by the way, isn't that where we picked Mayo?

Re: Adam Sch. reports : Matt Cassel to Chiefs ! [merged]

i just hope we do better with 2nd rounders than we have done in the past.most likely 1 of the 3 will be traded for a 2010 pick i would assume as usual.

its very likely that we will use the second round picks to trade up during the draft and get guys we like. For example we could winde up picking 19 instead of 23 and 29 instead of 34

Re: Pats release on Cassel / Vrabel trade

I would not have liked the deal if it was only Cassel. But Cassel and Vrabel.

Wow, Chief's made off like Bandits!

CHIEFS ACQUIRE QB MATT CASSEL, LB MIKE VRABEL IN TRADE WITH PATRIOTS

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Saturday that the club has acquired QB Matt Cassel and LB Mike Vrabel from New England in exchange for the Chiefs second-round pick (34th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft. The agreement is contingent on both players reporting and passing their physicals.

"I have a long history with both players," said Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli. "Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family."

Cassel (6-4, 230) has played in 30 games (15 starts) during his four-year career with New England (2005-08). He has completed 349 of 555 passes (62.9%) for 3,946 yards with 23 TDs and 13 INTs, good for an 88.2 QB rating. In addition, he has 85 carries for 298 yards (3.5 avg.) with three TDs. Cassel has also played in four postseason contests and was a member of the Patriots Super Bowl XLII club. He originally entered the NFL as the first of New England's two seventh-round picks (230th overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft.

The Northridge, California native played in 25 games at Southern California, completing 20 of 33 passes for 192 yards. Cassel served as the backup to Heisman Trophy winning QBs Carson Palmer and Matt Leinhart for the Trojans. Cassel was a prep standout at Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth, California.

Vrabel (6-4, 261) has played in 176 games (110 starts) during his 12-year NFL career with New England (2001-08) and Pittsburgh ('97-00). He was a member of four Super Bowl teams with New England, including Patriots squads that won Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX. He was also named to the AFC Pro Bowl squad following the 2007 campaign.

The Akron, Ohio native has accumulated 681 tackles (453 solo), 51.0 sacks (-335.0 yards), 11 INTs for 73 yards with one TD, 35 passes defensed, 16 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and 47 special teams tackles, as well as eight TD receptions. He has seen action in 19 postseason games (17 starts), registering 95 tackles (65 solo), 8.0 sacks (58.0 yards), three passes defensed, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He also owns a pair of TD receptions in the postseason.

Vrabel originally entered the NFL as a third-round draft pick (91st overall) of Pittsburgh in '97 and joined the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent in 2001. The Ohio State product recorded 36.0 QB sacks and 66.0 tackles for loss during his collegiate career. Vrabel attended Walsh Jesuit High School in Stowe, Ohio.

It's enough to move us up to #10. See the post right ahead of yours.

To quote Pedro Martinez: Let's sit back and call Scott Pioli our daddy.

Re: Peter King reporting 09 2nd rounder from Chiefs

Like every other pats fan, I definitely expected more, but Im happy with the position we are in after today. Great value second round pick and a whole lot of money to make a big move in FA. We didnt give up very much since we will have the same healthy QB that had the best NFL season in history 2 years ago.

Re: Tom Curran says #3 overall pick NOT involved in trade

Matt Schaub went for 2 #2 picks and he didn't even play for 1 year. Jarred Allen went for a first round pick. We gave them a franchise caliber 27 year old QB plus we threw in a 3 time pro bowl linebacker. Wow we got absolutely jeeped!!!!!!! This is totally bogus, especially because the Chiefs were the reason Brady got hurt in the first place!!!

I'm a little disappointed, but it's not that bad.

An early #2 is very good from a salary cap perspective - you get a player that has the potential to start day 1, for short money over 4 or 5 years. I would have preferred a lower 1st round pick (in the 20's), but hey.

I'm also not crying over Vrable. Too may times last year he was a tick late getting pressure. Thomas will be back, Crable will have a year in the strength program, plus whoever we draft/pickup with the 20mil+ we have available under the cap now.

So slightly disappointed, but nothing big.

Re: Pats release on Cassel / Vrabel trade

We GOT: RIPPED, HOSED, BURGLARIZED...... A 27 year rising star QB and a defensive captain for a 2nd round pick is a TRAVESTY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure how you can conclude this. You have no idea what the market was like. The #34 pick is really like a first round pick. Plus, would you rather keep Cassel here at 14 million a year?

I know it's not what we thought we were going to get but I'm happy with this. Clears up cap space too.

OK, to me it doesn't really matter much that Vrabel was involved in this deal. He is 34 years old and on the decline, so you really can't have expected much for him. Traded alone, he probably would have netted a sixth rounder--fifth at best.

But that said, I'll be a little dissapointed if the Pats only got a second rounder (albeit a very high second) for Cassel. They should've at least got a conditional 2010 pick--something like a third rounder, but with the potential to be a second or even a first if Cassel made the pro bowl, KC made the playoffs, etc.

If the Pats truly did get only that 2nd round pick, then my guess is the market just must not have been there for Cassel. The Pats couldn't hold on to him forever with that $14.6 million price tag.

Re: Pats release on Cassel / Vrabel trade

I have not problem with getting the #34 pick.

This is now a very important draft in the Patriots future.
I would not be suprised to see them trade one of our 3 - 2nd round picks for a established player from another NFL team.

I would love to see us add TJ Houshmandzadeh.

We just freed up 18 million dollars in this trade,

Where were the other teams offers? If KC was the only team with interest, I think we were lucky to get what we did. Its not like keeping Cassel on the roster at $14 million a year was an option.

Re: Pats release on Cassel / Vrabel trade

We did not trade what these guys have accomplished (far exceeding expectations). We traded what they are about to accomplish. Time will tell how 2010 Vrabel and Cassell compare to #34 and the free agents we get with the cap space.

Re: Pats release on Cassel / Vrabel trade

we have alot of picks and cap......the fat lady is not singing yet:eek::eek::eek:

Would anyone be surprised to see the Pats turn KC's 2nd into a 2010 1st?

Re: Pats release on Cassel / Vrabel trade

So in the end, a rising quarterback with a $14.6M salary was judged to be worth a high 2nd, and an aging linebacker with a was judged to worth $3M salary/bonus was deemed to be worth a high 4th. Taken together a #10 in the second round and a #10 in the 4th is approximately equal to the #34th pick in the draft.

So, in the end, the patriots didn't get R-I-P-P-E-D. No one thought that Cassel and his contract was worth a first. If there was such a team, the patriots would have made the deal. The patriots got the market price for Cassel. With regard to Vrabel, some here wanted him cut. Apparently, he wasn't worth much in the open maket with his contract. When he was traded the speculation ON THIS BOARD was a 4th or 5th.

We are all disappointed because we hoped that the media (on our side this time) and Belichick could hype up Cassel to be worth more.

Re: Peter King reporting 09 2nd rounder from Chiefs

I was expecting more than just a 2nd rounder. Maybe a 2nd rounder plus future pick depending on performance. Ah well, after this trade goes down, the Pats can become very active in the free agent market. So let's see what they do with all that extra cap space now.
