03/16 Raiders: Asomugha a free agent?

The News
With the Raiders reportedly working on a deal to add all-pro CB DeAngelo Hall to the roster, the discussion may turn to the effects on young stud CB Nnamdi Asomugha, according to ProFootballTalk.com. For Hall to come to Oakland, the team will have to agree to a long-term, high dollar contract (rumored to be in the neighborhood of $10 mil). On the other hand, the Raiders designated Asomugha, viewed by many as one of few corners in the NFL worthy of discussion as the top player at the position, as their exclusive franchise tag player. Because of that decision, Asomugha will be paid the average of the top five contracts in the NFL at the position... and now the Raiders are looking to add one of those huge contracts to the equation.

Our View
As a result, many are watching to see if the Hall signing comes to fruition, for the Raiders may, in essence, be forced to revoked that tag as they will no longer be able to afford both players. If that happens, the young CB becomes an unrestricted free agent and it will be free-agent bedlam as teams line up to throw offers at Nnamdi Asomugha. Stay tuned.

unlikely to happen but you never know with the Raiders....

Re: Nnamdi Asomugha to Become Free Agent?

Wow. I hope that happens. He's big, fast and can cover anybody. In my opinion, he's worth the money. It would fill a need and this will allow the Pats to trade down if there are any takers and address the LB's. If they can't trade down, I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a move for Chris Long or Gholston.

Re: Nnamdi Asomugha to Become Free Agent?

Unfortunately, Pats can't afford him without cutting players. Plus, if you are gonna pay top CB $$ to someone, why not just figure out a way to re-sign Asante?

My guess is one of the teams that still has a ton of cap space left (Titans & Bucs come to mind) will sign him.

I would take Asomugha over Asante any day of the week, and it's not really that close. Asomugha may be one of the few "shutdown" corners in the NFL right now

Re: Nnamdi Asomugha to Become Free Agent?

I really doubt Asomugha becomes a free agent. It's in his best interest to sign that tender and take that big chunk of guaranteed money for this year and hit free agency after that. There wouldn't be as many teams involved in bidding for him if he hit free agency now.

Although I doubt Asomugha will become a free agent, I don't think the Pats have to cut a single player to sign him. The Pats are about $11 million under the cap. Even if they sign him for a contract for $10 million a year, his first few years of the contract would probably have a manageable cap number of $5-6 million or maybe less. So we would still have $4-5 million. The Pats have several players they could restructure most notably Brady to avoid cutting anyone.

As for why not resign Samuel. It is because Asomugha is just a lot better. He is the closest thing to a shutdown CB you can get these days. I would take him over Samuel in a heartbeat.

If they really want him they can afford him.

Re: Nnamdi Asomugha to Become Free Agent?

asomugha is ten times better then samuel....i would consider paying that man....

now as for paying a cb that much, i just htink in our scheme cb's are not that importatn, we need a pass rush more...

however its the raiders, i wouldnt be surprised for that to happen, LOL

Re: Nnamdi Asomugha to Become Free Agent?

Here's to hoping that the Commitment to Excrement bunch at least saw that one coming ;)

Re: Nnamdi Asomugha to Become Free Agent?

This guy is better than Asante ... they sign Hall and now they may have to cut him ... sure is sweet to have Bill & Scott on our side. If we had that luxury you know Bill goes with the kid and signs a FS to help him out ... I mean that's how we get the rings.

Curious as to what posters on here are basing their completely definitive opinions that NA>>>>Asante? The three Raiders games you have seen in the last five years?

Re: Nnamdi Asomugha to Become Free Agent?

Um...why wouldn't the Raiders just pay Asomugha?

How is Hall a better option than Asomugha and a 2nd round pick?

ive seen stats having their aim showing asante's numbers, and NA is always at the top of the lists.....the guy is better then asante, i would venture to say he has surpassed bailey

asante may not even break the top 5 cb ranking, NA is either 1 or 2

Quarterbacks completed less than a third of their passes against Asomugha. Some of those incompletions were picked off. I think the stat is that he was thrown at a grand total of 24 times last year because his coverage is so good.

Unquestionably superior to Asante.

They would. They are $6.5M under the cap already carrying him with the exclusive tag. They want Hall to bookend top corners because the guys playing opposite Asomugha have been lousy. If they sign Hall they have those bookend corners for 2008 and Hall as insurance in case they can't get a deal done with Asomugha before 2009. Getting a deal done with him would likely shave $3-4M off his cap vs. the exclusive tag.

Either way they aren't going to release him despite some fan site musings when if they wanted to they could trade him between now and draft day and pretty easily net another first.

Re: Nnamdi Asomugha to Become Free Agent?

lets hope he dont get cut cause he would end up a jet or a fin the pats dont have the money to get him

His coverage wasn't the sole reason he wasn't thrown at. The Raiders were the worst run D in the NFL giving up 4.8 yards per carry. They were also a pass defense that gave up the 3rd most yards per attempt. In other words, teams moved the ball at will on the Raiders and had no reason to risk throwing the ball in the direction of their only good player.

That's false. The Pats could easily afford to sign him. The first year of the deal isn't likely to be more than 4-5 million against the cap because of the signing bonus.

Yes. The Pats could sign him to a realistic contract. But my point is there are lots of other teams who could pay him a lot, lot, more on the open market. My guess is the guy going for his first big pay day will sign with the team offering him a lot, lot more.

As far as others citing stats suggesting NA is far superior to Asante, maybe I'm just a little less reluctant to throw former Pats under the bus than others, but I'd rather pay the guy who has already succeeded in the Pats system with back-to-back 10 INT & 6 INT seasons than throw the money at guy who was never really fully tested on a bad Raiders defense.
