Trying to see how effective Mangini can be moving forward in his relationship with his players now and in the future moving forward. This has never happened in the NFL before ... he is in unchartered waters.
Let's face it ... the NFL is a "macho" league. More than ever the strength of the coaches persona helps in attaining the right free agents and keeping their coaches onboard with the grand plan.
I don't see Belichick having this problem moving forward. I'm sure there will be players who may not want to come here but there will always be players who do want to come here because players love being coached by Belichick and players play to win.
I'm not making this thread to slam Mangini ... not at all. I'm just real curious if his newfound "ratfink" title (as labeled by the media) will hinder him moving forward.
1 - Will players really want to play for him ... I think it's fair to ask?
2 - Will potential free agents just use the Jets for leverage?
3 - Will he have to overpay free agents to aquire them?
4 - If/when he is not the Jets head coach, will another team want him as head coach with the media "ratfink" title on him?
Just as being called a cheat will hinder Belichick coaching elsewhere I feel being labeled a rat is the harshest ball & chain there could be. Mangini let the media inter the inner sanctum of coaching ... has to be bad.
5 - If you were an NFL player ... would you want to play for Mangini?
My opinion is that he has a 2-year window to make it to the AFC title game at least. The Jets will need to shed this controversey quickly. Winning is the only way he sheds the "ratfink" title. I think all the above applies to Mangini even if he is not a rat. So long as the media labels him the rat .. he shall be one. Just as being a cheat will follow Belichick ... regardless of how undeserving either title shall be.
