Mike Reiss Ending Mailbag

Okay maybe misunderstood your "useless" comment. I thought that was directed at Mike Reiss specifically but I gather that it was intended to mean he is "useless" while under the confines of ESPN.

Is that it?

They are effectively the same. Mike today is what ESPN has him being. He's sacrificed his reporting/analyzing site for the money. Again, I don't blame him for that. Pretty much this entire kerfuffle is because I wanted someone to flesh out a disagreement post instead of just using the <disagree> click.

And QuantumMechanic is pretty much making my point for me, all by himself.

He should go work for Bill Simmons. He started his own business. I hope he leaves BSPN so I can start reading his column again (I haven't viewed BSPN's website or channel in Months :D). He is a talented reporter/columnist who actually reports news.

Edit:

If you're going to disagree with a post, have the courtesy of posting that disagreement instead of just clicking the damned icon, especially when there are points in a post which can lead to conflicting reasons for such disagreement. I have no idea what people are disagreeing about here.

Are you blaming him for taking the money?
Are you saying that Reiss is now demonstrating Volin-like stupidity?
Are you saying that the quality of Reiss' site hasn't gone down?
Are you saying that Reiss is now breaking lots of news?
Are you saying that Reiss is getting info out faster?
Are you saying that Reiss is not way down on my list of reporters worth reading?

Edit: Now, other than trolling, how the hell can anyone disagree with this post?

What's your list of reporters worth reading, by the way? Mine's very short and Reiss is near the top. Actually, it's Kirwan, Howe and Reiss, so they're all at the top. [Plus every patsfans writer except one].

I hate the disagree button.

The purpose of this board is to have discussion and throw out thoughts and comments for feedback.

If you agree, agree. If you like, you like. If you wish to comment , comment. If you dislike, dislike. Thats all good, IMO.

If you disagree, state why and with what and offer a counter-point. It's also very appropriate to ask clarifying questions.

And some of us more 'lurker' than posters don't care about post counts, positive ratings, or negative ratings. Heck, the first time I ever clicked the alert tab was a week (or two) ago (been on the board since pre-crash 2000 season) . If the buttons weren't intended to be used, they wouldn't be there.

If I hit disagree and don't write aTolstoy-like explanatory reply or any reply, I don't see why anyone should be up in arms. Particularly since 9/10 of time all you have to do is read the first post and know what is disagreeable (unless someone has a unique ability to string together a multitude of disagreeable blatherings ;) , nah nobody like that on this board. )

Deus, we've all agreed that the way ESPN has been squeezing, editing, and adding other content to Reiss's column is a bad thing.

But that's not what you posted about. You posted about the quality of Reiss's reporting:

However, he's been pretty much useless ever since. ... It's a matter of decline in quality without any offsetting improvement in information or speed. He's now way down on my list of Patriots reporters worth reading.

That's why I disagreed with you. I think Reiss is a fine reporter, the quality of his info is still top-notch, and I would immediately look him up if he moved to another employer. You are perfectly within your rights to disagree with this post if you want :)

See, now you've goaded me into a debate (grr).

Yikes. I just drafted a tautological post. It read:

I actually feel sorry for Deus. It can't be pleasant to have one's mind filled with unpleasant delusions.

You guys might have had a fine time teasing me about the bolded parts ...

My mind is fine, with no delusions. Now, are you done with the nonsense, or do you want to invent some more tone?

When reading a Mike Reiss piece ...

How do we know all the content is from Reiss?

Most of them are being edited ... even CHB gets edited more than before.

Other than that I enjoy Reiss's stuff ... always have and always will.

No debate. This subject was boring from the beginning, which is why I had ignored it in the other thread. I only posted in this one because of the specific and current nature of the O.P. (stopping of the mailbag). If you don't think that Reiss' work has suffered, that's on you, and you're welcome to feel that way. I just wanted a clarification, out of courtesy. Instead, I got a bunch of clowns (not referring to you) piling on a non-issue, and doing a crappy job of it while they were at it.

I think I'll try a "disagree"/"dislike" experiment.

And from Shmessy himself

And some people wonder why I point out when Shmessy is trolling....

Anyone who reads what I wrote (in ANOTHER thread) can CLEARLY see I was talking about the ESPN website - - not Reiss.

You try to debate the opposite of everything here no matter what the subject. It is like doing a crossword or sudoku for you. The poster who wrote you must be a blast at parties was spot on.

This is your schtick and you are a broken record.

I truly pity you.

Mike Reiss continues to present informative and timely Patriots news...and will continue to do so whether at ESPN or elsewhere. I appreciate his work.

Thank you Mike.

I get your opinion and I get the purpose of the disagree button.

I just think it's counter-intuitive and defeats the purpose of having dialogue over a topic or opinion.

Quit acting as if you're some offended party. You aren't. You invented a mythical 'tone' in your head, and you don't like getting called on it.

Here's the reason why I gave you a "Disagree" on that one - - Fencer is NOT inventing a "mythological tone". It is quite real and obvious to anyone here reading your consistently noxious bleatings.

How about that for an explanation?

I disagree that, in the first years he left he gave up anything, in fact his column was jam packed with the type of infotainment he specialized in.

Has every NFL related site sucked in the last year? sure, but that wasn't predictable. Since when was the Globe the paragon of quality sports with shaugnessy, Borges not that long gone, Gaspar and Volin waste products.

Dial it back 4 years and Reiss had a pretty sweet job with lots of content every day.

Both ludicrous and hypocritical

I could see Bill Simmons bringing him into his post-Grantland ventures.

Need to start seeing 'Free Mike Reiss!' signs at the games.

...(making a doubtlessly vain attempt to reroute, while dodging the grenades being lobbed)... Interesting idea, I don't know if it is likely or not. On the one hand, Simmons primary shtick on his Podcasts is to bring on his old buddies (often some type of comedian like Cousin Sal) who are fans of other teams and then try to make entertaining banter and, as longtime buddies do, make fun of each other's teams and defend their own teams. Simmons defends the Patriots and the Celtics, his other pals defend their own teams. Reiss doesn't really seem like the type to do that shtick.

On the Grantland website, Simmons brought in some very reputable writers, including a pulitzer prize winner. Really all of the authors were pretty decent and reputable: Contributor Bios «, not like the screaming mediots at the main ESPN website. I'm not sure if Reiss's writing is really up to snuff with some of the previous Grantland writers that Simmons hired.

We will just have to see, who knows what Simmons has up his sleeve with his new HBO job. So far we have only seen the "Bill Simmons Podcasts" that appear to be clones of the B.S. Report, but his new TV gig doesn't start until Spring.

I'm curious to see your ranked list if you don't mind sharing.

I was going to post that and it makes a lot of sense. I wish there were more outlets for writers that actually like the home team and football and want to offer a variety of infotainment like Mike has.

Reiss's pieces looks a lot different than the mishmash he has to write for now.
It doesn't make sense as an explanation for stopping it.

It depends on what/when I'm looking for and at. For 'in game' posts, I wouldn't be looking to Schefter, for example. But, generally speaking, I find that starting off with the quartet of (no particular order)

Curran
Howe
Kyed
Schefter

is a pretty good way get the information ball rolling.

Edit: I'd refer you to the thread I made with all the twitter links, but it's been moved out of the 'sticky' section, and I get an error message when I try to pull it off of Google.
