Breaking: NYJ fined $100,000 for Revis tampering

Keep in mind that there are two consistent features of Goodell's reign as commissioner, the Jets get special favorable treatment and the Pats get the shaft. Anyone that doesn't believe that is kidding himself at his own peril and that of the team he owns.
Again, I'm trying to understand what criteria he used, and trying to avoid just claiming bias.
The decision is what it is, and to me it seems like a terrible one, but I think it would be instructive to know the why.

The why is that he is biased towards the Jets and against the Pats. About the only other person who doesn't believe this the owner of the Pats. How long do you think it was before Goodell stopped laughing at the Pats complaint and told Johnson it would cost him the usual wrist slap.

This outcome validates the views of those who believe the league office was and is run by Jet sycophants and that league rules that apply to every other team do not apply to the Jets. This was the worst and most deliberate case of tampering the league has seen and it involved a first ballot HOF player and division
rivals, if it doesn't warrant a first round pick then nothing ever will. Every owner in the league should take notice and make very clear that they want Andrew Luck, Sheldon Richardson, etc... Etc.. and that the checkbooks are wide open. What's a slap on the wrist when you get a great player?
You have finally seen the light.

Well, we probably don't agree with the logic, but there was criteria used to make the decision.
Thats what I would like to know. What criteria he used to arrive at that punishment.
Saying the decision is bad doesn't answer how the decision was made.
I don't need to see the criteria to know the decision is bad @AndyJohnson. When you have established precedent and ignore it, it's a bad decision.

Saying "I told you so" is really bad form so I'm not going to do that in this thread. I don't want to be so gauche as to say "I told you people dreaming of draft picks that this was only going to get a slap on the wrist".

So I'm just going to refrain from posting.
agreed, i didn't think they'd get draft picks never mind the rodents first rounder. what was posted here reminded me of trading mallet to the browns for their first rounder #6 overall, it wasn't going to happen. as far as the 9ers they CALLED the players agent, thats a lot more blatant then woody saying something off the cuff in a press conference.

Barring hard proof that the Jets were in contact with Revis during the season I'd have to agree...although I didn't think it would be only 100K. I guess a factor could have been the fact the Pats could have kept Revis if they were inclined to do so making the tampering less egregious.

I pray Kraft and BB find their ways to punish this league in return.....Kraft holds a lot of sway in the owner's circle.......

I hope we tamper with Richardson now just to f**k with those rat-bastards.......hell a $100,000 fine would be worth it.....oh wait I forgot they'd go full lynch mob on us

100% out of whack.

RK said it, 'the 20m is a placeholder.' That meant that he essentially made public what most figured, they couldn't afford that and needed to negotiate. so woody subsequently saying he would match anything was inserting a wedge in that negotiation. And that is the freaking definition of the rule my friend. That makes MORE not less egregious

Either the Jets are innocent, and shouldn't be fined, or they should be penalized seriously. This is absolutely ridiculous. It's like saying they did it but we don't care.

I think we should start tampering all the time. If the fine is only $100K, that's just part of the cost of doing business, no different than car companies who don't bother fixing faulty equipment because it's cheaper to deal with the few lawsuits instead of a total recall, or oil companies who flagrantly violate rules to save hundreds of millions of dollars vs. the fraction of a fine.

In fact, I expect our fine for commenting on this will be triple the piddly amount.

Well Good Ole' Rog just set a precedent that NFL owners can talk about players that are under contract to other teams during press conferences and how they would like to sign them and only expect a $100k fiine.
Exactly. What is the point of having the rule if this is the outcome? A Hundred thousand dollars is not fine to an NFL owner. It's a cost of doing business. It would be like fining me 10 bucks.

Like I said in the Trolling thread, Roger Goodell has finally dropped any pretense of objectivity and neutrality. With his comment on Charlie Rose on one day and his tampering result on the next, Goodell came out in front of the entire league and media and told the Pats and Bob Kraft FU. He made it clear it was open for all teams to tamper with Pats players. Feel free to pump in noise when you play the Pats at home, and to all his media whore buddies, its also acceptable to attack the Pats or slander their brand.

Most felt Goodel would rather the entire "deflategate" mess would disappear. But no sane individual would make a comment like he did on Rose if he wasn't looking to inflame the haters and damage their brand.

Roger Goodell has been at war with the Patriots for a long time. This week he finally came out and declared it. At least I give him credit for that. Now its time for Bob Kraft to recognize that a state of war has existed for quite some time between his franchise and the rest of the league, and start to do something about it.

Keep in mind that this is a special Jets only ruling and does not set a precedent or follow a precedent. Just like the camera placement ruling didn't follow a precedent or establish a precedent. Maybe the owner of the Pats finally realizes that appeasing a biased dictator by throwing your most valuable employee under the bus and sacrificing the reputation of his team does nothing to change his bias and is only considered a sign of weakness for future incidents. The war was lost in 2007. This is just the aftermath and if the owner of the Pats is looking for allies now he will find out how few he has now.

My fear is that The Dope has lined his ducks (aka the other owners) up in a row and made sure Kraft and the Pats are standing alone, a very easy scenario to imagine. The Dope told Rose in the interview that the league and investigators "have an obligation to all 32 teams, not just one..." If that isn't ominously revealing, I don't know what is. Take all of that and combine it with the Reiss and Curran reports from the owners' meetings saying it seemed like anti-Pats sentiments were everywhere (not to mention the approved anti-NE rule changes) and it seems clear that the 31 against one movement is full steam ahead. If that's happened, Kraft will be powerless.

It won't be $100,000 if the Pats do it, and I don't want the Pats to try it and prove me right.

Yeah, you're right. Then we'd have to deal with 5 weeks of ESPN coverage, then Jerry Rice saying we need an asterisk because tampering is illegal now unlike in the 90s when he was with the 49ers. But that was cool, it was legal back then. Wait, it wasn't? Yeah, everyone did it! Oh. Really?? Not legal? My bad!

What a ****ing tool.

What a joke.

The NFL has a precedent (the Niners and Briggs), but Goodell ignores that.

The smoking gun of Manish Mehta knowing and publishing all the contract details prior to when an agreement could legally be reached is also ignored.

Woody Johnson's comments - virtual verbatim wording of what the league said they considered to be an example of tampering - is also ignored.

All this coming on the heels of the NFL issuing warnings to all teams about tampering is also ignored.

Precedent of prior punishments being more severe when a team thumbs its nose at a warning from the league - yep, that too is ignored.

What an absolute joke.

So why did you give my post "What a complete and overt slap in the face" a "Disagree"?

Looks like you completely agree.

We all know who the butt of the joke is but no one in Patriots Place is laughing.

I think the fix is in.

As much as I continue to believe that the Wells report SHOULD exhonerate the Pats and punish the real perpetrators of the frame job, this ruling today on the Jets and today's relinquishing of tax-exempt status (the real goal of which is to make it harder for government oversight of the NFL) is as clear a signal as possible that Goodell is going to do it all his way.

While he was just as guilty of hypocrisy over saying a word about astericks what with his 49s being repeat Cap offenders (sorry cheaters) you're probably thinking of his hypocrisy over the use of Stickum.
