Does anyone now think Pats are still "cheap"?

If so...see Mccourty contract and (hopefully) Revis deal

Yes and I can't stand it any more!

[ Someone had to say it ! ]

You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

Cheap usually means

1) Using all your cap money (no team who is always close can be considered cheap). TB is "cheap".
That what the 89% rule was passed to prevent.

OR

2) not willing to spend huge percentages of the cap on the team's top dozen players. Of course, the patriots WERE INDEED often cheap in this respect, preferring to spend more money on players 13-35 than they could do if they used their money for their top 12.

WHERE ARE WE NOW?
This is a matter of interpretation. It would seem that we spend lots and lots of money on our top 12.

People equate cheap with not spending a lot of money on unknown commodities (free agents from other teams, who happen to be shinier, newer, and overall just COOLER than sticking with your own proven, reliable winners.)

one of the few teams currently below the cash floor

Why would spending more on 13-53 and less on 1-12 be considered cheap?
Thats like saying if you have a $100 dinner once a week and eat a $2 can of tuna the other 6 days, and I spend $16 each day, after we each spend $112 you would consider me cheap.

Wasn't this dispelled like 10 years ago? Why does this thread come up every time we sign a player to a big contract?

The patriots used to spread the wealth, now, not so much.

top 11 over $4M

next 16 $800K to $4M

next 24 under $800K

When I think of a low-paid veteran, or signing a JAG, I think of $800K or less. That total now represents 47% of our top 51 players. Of course, some of these players are 2nd year bargains like the draft choices and Butler.

Dear God,

Not this crap again. I don't say the Patriots are cheap, but the Patriots have to spend hard cash in order to avoid being penalized for not having spent enough, and the O.P. is going where he's going?

I agree with you.

The position of saying that a team is cheap because it doesn't have enough $8M players is very unreasonable.

Cash floor is a transient issue. In the next year or so, we will be signing lots of contracts with high bonuses which will move us over the cash floor. We have lots of top players on their rookie contracts.

yes, people who are not Patriot fans.

Seriously, the league has seen to that this is no longer really possible (unless it's been redefined since then and I doubt it has). I think the perception created by teams (like Washington) that creates ridiculous back loaded contracts that will never see the light of day helped drive that perception.

and on the ironic side, many of those opinion pundits still think we're the model franchise (so a Kraft perception more than a BB one...i guess),

You make a good point, but calling out people for saying a team is cheap should not be done at a time said team needs to spend money just to get above the league's hard cash minimum. It's bad timing, at the very least.

I have still herd pats fans this off season say...they will keep revis or mccourty if they don't cheap out again.

as you mention, I think this is mostly a function of the youth of the team, and recent success in the draft.
I don't think it's any conscious scheme to create some kind of large peasant base.

I guess when you consistently choose wisely in the draft and UDFA that can happen.....
