What players did you want to draft but turned out to be busts?

Time to 'fess-up? Fair enough. Two things:
1) The mea culpas are limited to the BB/SP era; the forgetable Booby Grier error is just that - forgetable.
2) I will forever believe that some of the proceeding busts could have turned into decent pros, had they been coached by the 2000-2004 NEP staffs.

2000:
6/35, #201 - LB Matt Beck.

Older brother of Falcons' LB Jordan Beck, was signed as a UDFA post-draft, but released before TC.

In 2006 the guys I most wanted for NE were:

Maroney (Second RB on my board behind Reggie Bush, and the RB I thought NE should pick over White, Williams, and Addai)

Chad Jackson (Number one WR on my board. I didn't think they would get both Maroney, and Jackson.)

Richard Marshall (I love his game)

Bobby Carpenter (I think he'll develop into a good LB)

Demeco Ryans (I thought he would kick ass in NE's system, but who knows. So far he's good in Houston, but he probably would have sat his first year in NE.)

Maurice Stovall (I was trying to find the possession receiver to replace Givens.)

Stephen Gostkowski (I watched him at the skills challenge and fell in love, LOL. His name, college resume', and his performace at that Skills challenge told me he was the pick. The only kicker I wanted. I didn't think they would take him in the fourth, though.)

Pat Watkins (I don't know, I thought he could develop into a decent Safety. I also remember him returning either a punt, or a kickoff, and my being really impressed.)

Hank Basket (I wanted this guy. I watched some video of him last year, and thought he would be a good late round sleeper, kind of in the Colston mode.

Will Blackmon (I thought he could develop)

Stanley McClover

Montavious Stanley

Fred Roach

I didn't want him before the draft but (gulp) after NE drafted Marquise Hill I thought he could turn into a very good football player. I even defended him the first year when people said he sucked.)

I liked Carpenter and Ryans last year also.

Seriously?..... I didn't want any of those guys.
Look to my signature line- It was a poor attempt at humor. I did like Terrell coming out though.

Amusing. But it does bring this to mind...

This board had a pretty big collective crush on WR Mike Hass last year. Hass was drafted low, cut in TC, and spent the season on another team's practice squad before heading off to NFL Europe. And unlike Jackson, he wasn't injured.

So I'm good with Chad.

You are correct sir but he was wanted as a day two pick, which he was...

Let us pose a question though. Who did you want the Pats to draft but they chose otherwise? and I 'm not talking about some impossiblist moving up to draft Barry Sanders or Sean Urlacher, (But I definitely wanted him if he slid!) I thought all the nine clubs that passed on him were outright idiots; most of them have confirmed it too. It was easy to see him as the next Butkus.

I wanted them to take Manny Lawson instead of Lawrence Maroney.
I wanted them to take Karlos Dansby instead of Ben Watson.

Both of the guys I wanted, went on the next pick after the Pats choice. So the value was there if you believe the other club's competences. So far both alternatives are doing very well. So are the guys that were picked by the Pats. Although Dansby has been to a Pro bowl, Watson hasn't, but then its easier to get there from the minor league that is the NFC.

Hmmm..

Do you post on other PatsFans boards? I could swear i talked with someone last year and we had identical lists. My list from last year had 90% of the players you just mentioned, minus Stanley and Watkins. I wanted Bullochs (sp?) over him even though he was a sure fire 2nd rounder. Oliver Hoyte was my other guy.

But going to the Carpenter thing for a sec. Im not so sure how he turns out. Hopefully Wade Phillips gets to him and can teach him some stuff early on. Because i think Parcells yanked him around to much.

I don't know if I had a SN on here around draft time last year, or not. I've had an account on ESPN since 2004. I also wanted Ellis Hobbs in '05, and was *****ing for BB to put him in when Duane Starks was stinkin' it up, lol.

On the ESPN forums I talked about my conversation with Bobby Carpenter, and how after talking to him I thought he would be a great fit, and seemed to have a really good head on his shoulders. I wanted him for the Patriots, but after talking to him I thought Dallas was going to draft him (just had that sense). I then called my brother (huge Dallas fan), and told him to add Bobby Carpenter to the Cowboys roster on Madden:D

I asked Kiper, and some draft experts about Carpenter on ESPN Radio, but they seemed more interested in plugging different players for NE & Dallas.

Yea, Parcells kind of pissed me off last year. My brother (the Cowboys fan) calls me up asking about Carpenter, and wanting to know why Parcells isn't playing him. He then ask me something like "I thought you liked this guy, and thought he was going to be really good" So, I then basically had to explain my pick of Carpenter for the Cowboys, and how I don't make decisions for Parcells:D It was almost like I was being held accountable for his performace, because I said he was going to be the pick, and would be a good player.

When it comes to Carpenter's future, I still think he'll develop into a very good full time starter at OLB. I really like the guy, and hope Wade Phillips uses him correctly. When Parcells actually started playing Carpenter, he looked good, and seemed to flash some of the ability that made him a first round talent.

The thing most note worthy about Parcells is that he doesnt like trusting rookies in very dependable situations. He wants the rooks to earn his trust. This the pulling off the stars on rookies helmets and making them carry water bottles, etc.

BTW, you "talked" to Carpenter? thats pretty interesting actually. The only reason I had him pegged for dallas was because Bobby's dad played for Parcells in New York.

Yea, during the interview he said Dallas (Parcells), NE (BB), and Cleveland (RC) were all teams he'd like to play for, and that his father had told him about his playing days under Parcells, and BB in NY. He didn't actually say he was going to Dallas, but I just got that sense after talking to him. I talked to a bunch of prospects last year, but with family health problems, and other things currently going on, I haven't been able to talk with really any prospects, yet. I probably will just before the draft, though.

I wanted SS Earnest Shazor in the 05 draft. Many had him pegged to go in the 1st to 3rd round. He was an All-American at Michigan who seemed to have it all, size, playmaking ability. I begged and pleaded every time the Pats picked to take him and couldn't believe he was still there. He ended up going undrafted and I was completely shocked.

This is one instance where a player should of avoided the combine all together. He was a bust but he would of got paid alot more had he not worked out.

Crap, I forgot about Shazor. I wanted NE to grab him as an undrafted free agent, and thought maybe he could be good. I also thought he was a bit of a SS/LB tweener though, and might have some trouble adjusting to the pro game at Safety. He'd probably be a good LB, if he weighed an additional 20 pounds.

Players who ive wanted this team to take.

Steven Jackson
Darnell Bing
Kelley Washington
Chris Gocong
Daniel Bullocks

are only recent players that come to mind.

bing are you serious?

This goes back a ways but I though LeVar Arrington was going to be a 10 time pro bowl player and before that Tony Mandarich.

While watching Peter Warrick play at FSU I thought he would be "special".

Very productive career at USC.

Was a playmaker.

Played against elite competition.

Tons of experience.

Not my fault he put on too much weight and they converted him to OLB in Oakland.

I was not alone.
