Darrelle Revis Rumors and Speculation

Lol chill bro, he isn't taking 3, 6 and 8 million base salaries.
That's a Brady courtesy deal. He knows he will never see the last 3 years of that deal.

He'll be 33.

The extra years are there to spread out the guaranteed money. Don't be surprised if his deal is structured in exactly this fashion. It could average $12-13m for the first 3 years. In which he can't be cut because of the enormous cap hit.

Maybe a 2 year deal mostly guaranteed money, he would still be in the market for his last big contract and here in NE we would for sure show his value, not in a dumpster like Tampa or Raiders or Browns.

In which case it's $45 million over 3 years, then another big free agency payday. That's almost as much as his last deal of $16 per year, none of which was guaranteed.

He'd receive $45M in cash over the 3 year period ($15M a year) that's essentially guaranteed, versus the $16M non-guaranteed per year number he was receiving in Tampa.

Bigger issue is from the Pats end - would have an $11.2M dead money hit if cut after year 3 (maybe 5.6 per year if designated a June 1 cut). Cap charge if kept in year 4 is $20.6M. Not sure they'd want to go that high in either case. I think they'd try to back-fill more in year 5 and 6 and less in year 4 to balance things out if possible, that way they could keep him for year 4 and cut him after that with only a $5.6M cap hit.

You just answered your own question right there.

But that doesn't make him the best fit. If that was the case, the best fit would be Oakland who has the most cap space. The best fit is where he can be used best and potentially help a team win a Super Bowl.

The Browns just have the most cap room of the suitors looking for him and unless he is the highest paid player in the NFL, every team that is pursuing Revis can pay him.

I thought about that and I agree you have legit points. My only concern is that if year 4's salary is too low, then the average value of the first 4 years goes below $15.

I could probably shave a couple million off year 4, making the first 4 years of the contract worth about $58. But I figure the cap will be ~$200 mil by then. :D

Oh I absolutely agree Cleveland is not the best fit, but my fear is that Revis just wants the biggest deal he can get, best fit be damned.

Oooooooo gotcha

If Zolak is right and the Pats offered Talib 4 years, $40 million with $20 million guaranteed, I certainly think they will pay top dollar for Revis.

We gotta cut Adrian Wilson so Revis's number will become available :singing:

Zo was most likely drunk when he said that..so take it with a grain of salt :D

The Patriots are not exactly well known for paying top dollar to anyone. I made my post regarding what I feel it will take to land Revis. I hope they do it.

That's not true. They have paid top dollar to Seymour, Wilfork, Mankins, Mayo, and other home grown talent. No free agent has ever been as big as Revis on the open market. He isn't only arguably the best CB in the NFL, he is arguably the best player in the NFL (at least if returns to 2011 form this year).

Reivs would get $45M/3 guaranteed and an opportunity to seek another contract after three years. The 2014 cap hit would be $8.6M, very doable.

The cap hits for the last three years would be $5.6M, $5.6M and $0.0M.

Wilfork, Mankins, Brady, Moss, Gronk, Hernandez and more say Hi

Why do fans think the pats are cheap? If a player fits their system and is very good if not the best...they pay top $$. People still don't realize this?

After all this hype, I can't take hearing he went somewhere else.
Sign him already! Quit being a pansy with the check book and just make it freaking happen!

Sometimes $100M deals take longer than an hour or two to negotiate and finalize.

Gotta learn to take hype with a grain of salt. Revis is called Mevis for a reason. So he may take the best deal which probably won't come from the pats. But at least they are trying to get him and the interest seems to be mutual.

He would love to stick it to the jets twice a year you can bet on that.

If he doesn't come here this board will be unreadable for a few days. Please don't add to it :)

Obviously we're $30-40 million under the cap year in and year out, so I think it lends to that perception.

Cousins, I have issue thinking the Pats will spend that much on Revis. I love the dream but it won't happen. This is not the Pats philosophy. I hope I am wrong. There is a bidding war as we speak.

I would rather do this. Let's sign Brandon Browner on a one year and put him at SS after his 4 game hiatus. He had a miraculous 23 PD in 2011. Give Logan Ryan the keys to the car and go. Browner is one of the best hitting and covering big corners and at 6'3" and 230lbs he lays the wood. Now I want Julius Peppers and Jared Allen to rotate with Chandler Jones and move Ninkovitch to MLB.

If VW and Tommy Kelly are back and Nink in the middle, you have an upgrade on our run "D". Now you have a rotation better than any(including the Broncos) to get to Peyton. The three kid DT's are a great rotation there.

Pressure on the QB makes a CB Pro Bowl caliber.
