Maturation of Julian Edelman

In 2011 we were DESPERATE to find a 3rdWR...so much so that wesigned tiquan underwood to play that role after the failures of price and ochocinco

Yet edelman was never considered as an option...2010 I can understand as we were using Tateas our #3

Underwood was the offensive version of Ross Ventrone. He wasn't really the WR #3 any more than anyone else was. Again, with Gronk, Welker, Hernandez, Woodhead, and Branch, they didn't really need a third receiver in most cases.

I don't get the argument people have as if the patriots DIDNT want welker at the 6$million a year he got from Denver..that IS what they offered him..but welker thought he could get more in the open market so the pats had to look for option #2 hence the amendola signing to cover their bases so they weren't stuck with nothing

When welker finally found out he wasn't getting that 10million$ a year it was too late so he took Denver's offer....I'm sure the pats would've loved to have him at 6mill...heck they offered him 8million$ during last season

Welker/his agent were unrealistic in what they thought he would be worth and it cost the pats.

But watching welker the last few games vs edelman I don't think we would have much better production. Edelman is playing out of his mind football right now

Did Calvin Johnson say anything about Minitron? A tweet or something?

He might actually be the true replacement to Wes Welker.

Whoa! If I were you I'd be careful with that type of talk around here. Blasphemy...

Yeah let's hope he doesn't do a Welker impersonation this offseason and sign elsewhere.

Wes Welker played like a HOF player for 6 years in New England, only Fitzgerald and Johnson put up numbers like his, he deserved elite money but didn't get it because of his age and position, as well as the new realities of free agency. What is stupid is thinking he is not a great player or deserving of elite status.

Fitzgerald and Johnson don't put up numbers like his. Fitzgerald and Johnson average 15, 16, 17 yards per catch, and are capable of scoring 12-15+ TDs per season.

Welker's a 10, 11 yards/catch guy who never hit double digits in TDs.

Welker's always been a glorified #3 receiver who was featured in this style of offense. That's why he didn't command the big salary. You'd better believe if NFL evaluators thought of Welker as a Johnson or Fitzgerald type, he would've gotten paid and signed to a longer term contract.

Welker's certainly good as a #3/slot receiver, but he's no Calvin, Andre Johnson, A.J. Green, or Dez Bryant. You can put those guys in the slot and they'll produce, but you can't put Welker outside and expect him to win matchups going down the field.

Update:

Edelman: 89 receptions 914 yards 6 TDs
Welker: 73 receptions 778 yards 10 TDs
Troy Brown's best season: 101 receptions 1,199 yards 5 TDs

Especially not knowing gronks situation going into thenext season I think they need to make resigning edelman a priority.

I think 3-3.5million $ would do it...hes not getting welker money after one good season

Edelman's last 4 games: 37 rec, 414 yes, 4 td

He's on pace for this line by season's end: 102 rec, 1045 yds, 7 td

That's a very Welker-like season.

He's 5th in the NFL in receptions, truly, very Welker-like (whom he's ahead of in every stat except TDs). He is a MUST sign in the offseason.

Edelman and Welker have success out of the slot because of their acceleration and lateral quickness. Those are traits you generally don't see in big receivers, so I don't think they'd be as successful as you might think.

I don't think Edelman is gonna ask for BIG money, but it won't be cheap. A fair deal is in order.

BB CAN'T let Edelman go.

He is growing into it.
Edelman has always been overrated on this board, but he has improved his play to live up to the overrating.
I think there are a lot of catches he should make and doesnt, but there is no doubt he has developed into a quality WR who gives the Patriots a reasonable portion now of what Welker did.
I wouldn't bet against him to continue the improvement.

Edelman has been a god-send this year. The only issue with him is health. Can he play 16 games playing a physical position like the slot. I would like to pay him 4 to 4.5 million, but he's in the driver seat this year with all the players we have lost.

Re: Masturbation of Julian Edelman

This is how I read it... /\ /\ /\ /\

:D

Re: Masturbation of Julian Edelman

Also Edleman adds a lot of value as an All Pro caliber Punt returner. Should be a high priority to be resigned.

Hate to break it to you but this is his ONLY opportunity to go out there and make his money aka "BIG money". Once off-seasons commences he is going to the highest bidder as he very well should. That means NOT the pats. My guess is Sanders comes in to replace him.

I agree but the pats are paying good money to Amendola to play the slot. I personally want to keep mintron but am not sure the pats are going to over pay for his services.
