I like Thompkins and think he'll be fine. I do think he was out positioned allot by DB's today. He get's off the line great but does'nt hold his leverage well to shield the DB. Hopefully, Dobson can get it going. I think his big body would be a good asset out on the boundary.

Agreed, we have ZERO playmakers on defense, we are a reactionary defense instead of making the opponents offense react to our defense. Who the hell is our Defensive Line coach ? Why haven't we been able to develop a stud DE or Rushing OLB since Seymour and McGinest/Vrabel ? Why can't we teach Jones more technique as far as his rush, obviously he has talent, as does Jamie Collins, why do I seen Collins ONLY on kick return coverage. Why don't we have anyone to punch the other team in the mouth ? Nobody is intimidated by the Pat's defense. Nobody on the other team's offense has their head on a swivel looking around in fear. I thought BB was a defensive genius, we haven't had a great defense in 10 years.
 
...the rush was repugnant for an NFL team...just embarrassing the lack of any creativity. On some plays they just sat Mayo in the middle, rushed four and played all DB's as the Bills ran crossing routes unmolested.I know some will say the D played well enough to win. I say, with THESE players, with the amount of draft picks put into THIS defense, this is some real lack of punch. No sacks, 3 pressures all day? C'mon...I'm not buying this $hiite for one minute..... If they let this Smith doofus just sit there all night throwing seams to Winslow uncontested, I'll puke. I'm going to this game. I hope THEY show up.


When was the last time a BB Pats team pinned their ears back and ran multiple blitzes on a running QB?

Vick? No.

Tebow? No.

Cordell Stewart? No.

Anyone who has paid any attention the past 14 years would know that, against a running QB, BB almost always plays contain on the edges, keeps DL's in their lanes and tries to confuse the QB on our secondary's coverage.

I'm surprised you and Ken wouldn't know that.

The excuse has been that we don't have good enough CBs to blitz and leave our CBs one on one. But now, we have good enough CBs to handle one on one, yet against a rookie, we don't send anyone to blitz him. I just don't get it. We haven't had a creative defense since Romeo left.

The problem was the unacceptable red zone turnovers by Ridley and Brady/Wendell.

The other unacceptable was turned in by BB/McDaniels themselves - - there was NO EXCUSE for going gunning up 17-7 deep in our own territory with 1:12 left in the first half. That was a brainfart of hurricane proportions. BB should have benched HIMSELF.

If it wasn't for the Offensive team screw ups, that is a 37-7 game, folks. At the very least, 31-7.

And so regarding your "Name me another NFL team that plays as vanilla as OURS...."?

Name me another NFL team that has won as many regular season games over the past 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 years (take your pick of ANY of those numbers).

I know "chicks dig the long ball" - - or in this case, the Gastineau.

While this is true, there still has to be some semblance of pressure on the QB. Give any QB time and he'll do well. I'm not overly worried as this is a team that is familiar with us, but I didn't think their OL was great. But maybe the rest of the season will prove out what they are like as a unit.

One thing (and i didn't read the game day thread) that bothered me was the low snaps Brady kept getting out of the shotgun. I'd say there 6-9 that Brady had to go down to knee level to pick up. That makes reads that much more difficult.
It's pretty obvious that the plan was to have Ninkovich and Jones keep contain and not allow Spiller or Manuel to get around the edge. The plan worked because Manuel only had 150 passing yards and Spiller had less than 2.5/YPC.

I'd rather that be the plan of action than trying to get sacks that results in big plays from over-pursuing. People are complaining about pressure when they're not looking at things in proper context instead are fixating on baseless statistics.
 
what bothers me, Shmess is 3 pressures and zero sacks....I get between the 20's...play back..but in the red zone you don't let a rookie just sit back there knitting sweaters while waiting for his targets to get WIDE OPEN. He threw for TWO TD's. I think they could have held the Bills to six points instead of 14 if they at least PRESSURED him. They didn't. That's my viewpoint, anyway, of what I want to see...your points are just as valid from your perspective.

as far as your previous allusions to Vick and Stewart, those games were not their FIRST in the NFL. My theory is, rookie QB, first season, hit him often and blitz him until he stops you.We did ZERO to threaten him today and could have lost as a result.

Defensive game plan was contain the RBs wide via Ninko & Jones.
It worked.
Aside from Talib falling asleep or Gregory, can't tell which, the D contained Buffalo well.
They're not responsible for the many fumbles and pick that gave points & position to the Jills.
D worked as designed today against fast dangerous RBs,
 
I loved this game. It was tough and they gutted it out and won. It is a young team that will get better through the season. Had a couple of near freak things happen and they still won. This was a good game that will build a tough character team we have been lacking.

context???what the hell do you call a turnover deep in your territory and the QB sits there baking cakes a play later and hits a WIDE OPEN RECEIVER for a TD??? Yeah, I say blitz THERE...in that situation.

Joe, if the Pats give up only 150 passing yards in the game, I'd gladly watch the DL do "The Worm" all game long. I couldn't give a crap about style points.

However, if they do this and the QB gets 250+ passing yards, then I'm pi$$ed.

The Defense won the game for the Patriots today.

Seriously? Has BB been smoking dust with Hernandez all year? The guy has one big play against scrubs in game one or two of the preseason and is all of a sudden a roster lock and ko return guy? Slater on returns? Wtf? Anyone here want to argue that blount looked as good as winn? Sure blount had the big run, but when did be fall forward? Winn looked like BJGE's more explosive younger brother. Against NYG's very talented dline (first string to boot...).

Very confused by st. Why can't we block anyone? As bad as the blocking is, our kick coverage is great. Slater and Cole had great punt coverage all game.

Great OP Ken, as always. My only quibble is on the Ridley thing, given his history. BJGE definitely spoiled us, but the run game was essential today and two fumbles in a quarter and a half was egregious. With 14 rookies looking on, the situation cried out for a clear message to be sent. With that said, I'm hoping BB starts Ridley on Thursday. I think that would send the right message too.

Blount is our #3 RB for now. We've had worse. Bolden is injured, and should take some of Blount's reps when he is healthy. Washington could also, but he doesn't seem any better than Blount.

And no, I don't know why Washington wasn't active and in there returning kicks. Blount must be our second biggest kick returner under Belichick (after Connolly).

Guess I still have the Ravens debacle renting space in my head but surely you can see there is NO Vrabel, McGinest or Rodney or Law making HUGE plays via the blitz in big spots. We HAVE the talent...let's USE it.

BTGW...anybody seen Spikes? ONE solo tackle? dehydrated? this wasn't in Miami...what gives?

I'm thinking that Spikes either had some form of the flu/bug, or had a hangover. That's the only thing I can think of in that situation.

We can't talk about pros and cons or where we can improve?

Our vanilla defense or lack of creativity on defense is a valid criticism. It's not like Joker just threw something out of left field. We've had a vanilla defense for the past few years, UNLIKE the defense we had when Romeo was here when we actually had creativity. We now have a veteran core, good enough players who's been in our system for a number of years. THere is no excuse why we just sat there and reacted.

Look this could be the argument but personally i just think it was the gameplan.

Don't blitz much, keep contain on the QB. Don't let the running game beat you and lets see if their QB can beat us with the pass. The only reason it was this close was a short field TD and a fumble return TD.

Personally i think that's not that bad a game plan against a rookie in his 1st game going up against Rb's like Spiller and Jackson and just doubling SJohnson as much as you can.
