Can someobody clarify this. We're basically paying a 4th rounder for 7 games+ playoffs from Talib?

What's the price for a player like that in FA?

If he plays well, probably looking at 5-7 m per year. But that price could go down given his background and him possibly facing a long suspension if he does something stupid again.

Hoping he plays well and we give him a 2-4 year deal.

On a side note. I'm hoping we get a 4thfor losing Law Firm. We didn't sign a rb and he got a pretty good deal from Cincy. Hope we get a 6th for Mark Anderson. Didn't sign anybody other than a minimum contract at that position T. Scott. So, we should get something for him too.

Compensatory picks have absolutely nothing to do with the positions that were signed. It has everything to do with the amount of the contracts that were signed by eligible players lost compared to the amount of the contracts that were signed by the eligible players gained.

The New England Patriots signed more unrestricted free agents than lost, so the New England Patriots will not be eligible for compensatory draft picks:

Robert Gallery
Brandon Lloyd
Jabar Gaffney
Donte Stallworth
Anthony Gonzalez
Daniel Fells
Spencer Larsen
Jonathan Fanene
Trevor Scott
Steven Gregory
Marquice Cole

Gallery doesn't count because he retired before the 1st cutdown of camp.
Gonzalez and Addai doesn't count because they were cut before camp.
Gaffney and Stallworh aren't likely to count either because they were signed to minimum contracts.

Fanene won't count because of hiding the medical condition.

That leaves Lloyd, Fells, Larsen, Scott, Cole and Gregory. Of these, only Lloyd, Fells, and Gregory had contracts that were anything more than the league minimum.

The Pats lost BJGE, Andre Carter, Mark Anderson, Tiquan Underwood, Gary Guyton and Antwuan Molden. Only the 1st 3 had contracts that would qualify.

great move by the pats if he can play like he did he's first few years with the bucs he becomes the best DB the pats have had since samuel left and if he becomes a bad apple just cut him

hey wait a minute....who the heck is Aquib Talib?

Love this move....no down side considering how well we draft DB's. Gladly give up a 4th for a chance this works out!

Not exactly. What the New England Patriots lack is competent talent in the defensive secondary.

Devin McCourty - 3rd year
Alfonzo Dennard - Rookie
Ras-I Downling - 2nd year
Kyle Arrington - 3rd year
Sterling Moore - 3rd year (less than 1 full with team)
Tavon Wilson - Rookie
Nate Ebner - Rookie
Steve Gregory - 6th year (1st with team)
Patrick Chung - 4th year

One of the issues I had with Bruschi's bashing of the secondary is that he all but ignored how young it is. Particularly how inexperienced it was in this defense. How many times have we heard him say it takes YEARS to learn and get comfortable in the defense? That it took him and Vrabel until 2003 for them to really "GET IT"?

Saying that the secondary lacks competent talent is a misnomer. Saying they are inexperienced would be a better label.

That was just a gentle poke.....I admire your enthusiasm. At this point,Mallet might be worth a 4th.However,BB has no interest in getting a draft choice.he really wants to see Mallet develop.

Next year, there are 3 players that other teams would like to pry away from the pats:

1.)Shane Vereen....He's young and has more value to another team, than to the pats.
2.)Jeff Demps.....again,more value to another team.
3.)Aaron Hernandez......that's right....flame away.......But,think about it for a second...He's young,excellent long-term contract.We will have Gronk,Fells,Shiancoe and Ballard.Ah's value will skyrocket,next year.Forget about draft choices,if Ah and a draft choice could get you Larry Fitzgerald(be still my heart!)....or Darelle Revis(don't laugh),would you do it?....I would:)

Shiancoe isn't under contract for next year. Ballard will be just recovering from his ACL tear. They won't be trading Hernandez.

You seem to have forgotten that Woodhead is a UFA after this season. Vereen becomes very important as a 3rd down back unless Ridley takes more snaps.

Demps will be valuable to this team as a kick returner. Something they don't really have.

So this idea that Hernandez, Vereen and Demps are more valuable to other teams than the Pats just doesn't float.

Andre Carter was signed after the season commenced. I sincerely doubt that Andre Carter qualifies for the compensatory pick evaluation.

Andre Carter - Oakland Raiders - 2012 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com

9/26/2012: Signed a one-year, $925,000 contract. 2013: Free Agent

The New England Patriots organization signed the following unrestricted free agents who are currently on the New England Patriots roster:

Brandon Lloyd
Daniel Fells
Spencer Larsen (IR)
Trevor Scott
Steven Gregory
Marquice Cole
Will Allen (IR)

List the New England Patriots unrestricted free agents who were signed by other NFL Franchises, who are currently on the team's respective rosters, that meet the aforementioned criteria.

Larsen, Scott, Allen, and Cole all have vet minimum 1 year deals. Of them, Larsen, Scott and Cole fall below last year's minimum threshold so it's unlikely that they'll count. So, of them, Allen is the only one who MAY count.

The Pats gained:
Lloyd, Gregory, Fells

The Pats lost:
Ben-Jarvus Green Ellis, Mark Anderson, Andre Carter

I will admit that I am not sure if Carter will count because he was signed so late by the Raiders.

The NFL released a statement regarding the situation today. I don't have a link but you can find it on profootballtalk.com.

Basically, the NFL claimed that he needs to miss 4 'games,' not 4 'weeks.'

In other words, it's a definite that he will not be eligible for the NEP/BUF game next Sunday in week 10, but we can have him ready for week 11 the following Sunday.

Florio released a statement claiming that someone at the league said that Talib would have to wait and Bedard parroted it. We have not gotten such a statement from the league. Otherwise the Pats would have announced it.

What both Florio and Bedard BOTH ignored was that Talib has to pass a physical by the Pats Team Doctors for the trade to be completed. So Talib HAS to show up at the Pats facilities for that. And he'll get his play-book, get introduced around, be given his locker and jersey, etc. Then, I'm sure someone will work with him off-site while he's serving his suspension.

Also, I think that the NFLPA could easily fight that this week would be the 4th game of the suspension since TB already had it's bye week as was pointed out and it would be unfair to punish him further since the original date to return was set at November 5th.

Sorry: I should have been clearer. I wasn't attacking your count per se; I was merely pointing out, contrary to what has been posted in the past, that it's not the raw numbers of FAs that matter.

Based upon contracts with signing bonuses that exceed the criteria for the veteran minimum salary benefit.

After thinking over this i think this is a great move. I've stated multiple times in the past that at this point i couldn't give a **** about character as long as it improves the pass D.

Either he gets "it" or gets the **** outta here. No big loss but potentially a lot to gain considering our situation.

Welcome to the Pats Talib!

For those who view this is potentially just a 7 game rental, it's what happens in game 8 and afterwards that will make this trade interesting, IMHO. The Pats are almost certainly going to win the AFCE regardless of the Talib trade. But the playoffs are another matter. We're likely to face some combination of Peyton Manning/Demaryius Thomas, Ben Rothlisberger/Mike Wallace, Joe Flacco/Torrey Smith or Matt Schaub/Andre Johnson in the playoffs. Will a secondary with Talib/Dennard at CB and Devin McCourty at deep safety fare better at preventing big plays against these combos than our secondary to date? I suspect the answer is yes.

I'm hoping that ultimately that the secondary that the Pats put on the field in the playoffs in January would not have given up the late TD from Russell Wilson to Sidney Rice, the late TD from Joe Flacco to Torrey Smith, or the 4th quarter SB sideline completion from Peyton Manning to Mario Manningham. If the Talib trade accomplishes that level of improvement in the secondary, it will have been worth the price.

Oops, meant Eli in the previous post, obviously, not Peyton. My bad.

I think this really does get to the crux of the issue. We have been saying for a while now geez put Devin at CB2 and put a CB 1 across from him and this secondary will be better OR Put Devin at FS and a CB1 there and our defense will be much better. Well here is the chance to prove that theory.

I really can't wait to see what happens here there is just alot of potential. Then again i was always on the optomistic side when it came to Dillon, Adailius, Moss, Ocho and Haynesworth.

It may not work out but i think the FO really showes they will do what they think they need to to win a SB.

The total NFL defensive backfield years of experience just doubled with one move.. hopefully he does what is expected of him.
