If the coaching staff feels that they are better off waiting for an opposing quarterback to make a mistake, I can understand the logic - even though I disagree.
In my opinion the biggest problem has been that they have taken that philosophy to such an extreme that they have become way too predictable. Opponents have been able to game plan with the knowledge that the Pats blitz less often than any other team in the NFL.
The problem with their pass defense has been that the Pats are too predictable.
I tend to agree to an extent.
I think the basic conservative philosophy is reasonable and justified.
However, there have been many cases late in games (or halves) where that conservative D allowed 80 yard drives in 2 minutes.
I think it is situational, and depends upon the opponent.
I think people also have missed the reality that we have not been very effective when we blitz, and have allowed an awful lot of big plays when blitizing.
