Rodney Harrison comments on Patrick Chung

Goldson will cost a fortune and Quin will most likely command a decent salary since he's coming from the Texans' defense.
If you want to acquire talented players in unrestricted free agency, you need to "flash the cash". Money talks, double discount walks.

Ray Lewis would not permit it.

Atlanta, GA - hint, hint

So it's just your baseless opinion, as opposed to something concrete. Thanks. I was just curious to know if Reed had said something to that effect.

Rodney should come out of retirement and play safety :rocker:

He would still be number one on the depth chart :snob:

How about hiring Rodnery as our DB coach ? will he bite ?

Patrick Chung is still a good player. He's a hard hitter who is a sure tackler, he would play very well on a team that uses a safety in the box (which the Pats DO NOT).

Also, the fact that the Patriots have used something like 9 picks on DB's on the first two rounds in recent years, and that NONE of them have improved, and that several have even regressed and gotten worse, means that the real issue is a bad secondary coach problem, not a talent issue.

The secondary coaching needs to be fired/replaced, it's clearly the weak link and the real issue.

Patrick Chung still has value to this team, it's just a matter of putting him in a position to succeed over being in a position of struggle.

What is Patrick Chung? He is an above average tackle who can lay the wood if needed. He is intelligent, and was set up last year to eventually become the leader of this secondary. He is decent in coverage for about 10-15 yards, but is best utilized in run support or as a support in coverage for intermediate routes. He is a prototypical Strong Safety. With Gregory being down the past few games, Chung has been playing a Free Safety role. That is in stark contrast to his strengths.

What Chung needs is a competent Free Safety to play alongside him so that he can let loose and be the missile he is. If he can have someone like McCourty (or Gregory is he tightens up his play) be able to play deep, and the Patriots can use more Cover 1, man to man, I'm certain Chung will be able to break out again.

Remember Chung in 2010? That's the player who I believe he is. He has just been taken out of position.

I reluctantly agree with you on both issues. I don't like to pan the coaching staff, but enough players have regressed or failed to progress to make me feel that there is a failure of player development. And Chung is a good player, but just too much of a coverage liability for what the Pats need.

Great first post, welcome to the forum.

Exactly.

Chung is kind of like Polamalu, they are in the box hard hitting safeties. The difference is the Steelers have Ryan Clark at FS who never makes mistakes and allows Polamalu to roam and play near the line of scrimmage.

It would be like taking Wes Welker, all the skills he has, and forcing him to be a stretch the field WR on the outside. Welker wouldn't be as successful in the wrong position. Same thing with Chung. Chung is not a free safety but our moronic secondary coaches (who should be fired) keep playing Chung deep when that is not his strength.

This meme needs to die. The notion that no player in the secondary has improved is clearly false. Furthermore, even if it were true, it would not prove that the problem is the secondary coach.

Spot on for the last comments.

Chung is a SS who Patriots use as a FS do to lack on drafting AND not spending the last money in getting a new one. Been lot's of option's to get the FS we need, problem have been the "run defense also thing" Bill want's from DB's also. If we used man cover corners with Chung as SS with a FS behind him it would be alot better.

But Bill have used the Zone, do to the fact that many of the corners we have ( DMC etc is better in zone then man )

Pretty sure if DMC moved to FS and Chung to SS with man cover corners we would get a better result.

Atleast it would also show where to improve / draft next year to make it stronger and a better back field.

You can acquire solid, talented players without backing up the Brinks truck and hamstringing the salary cap. I would love to see Goldson come aboard, but for the cost differential, I'd just as easily love to see Reed spend his last years here with a high round pick on a quality safety out of college.

I think DMc at FS and Chung at SS should be explores further. As it was said earlier, a good coverage safety allows Chung to slide back to his preferred position.

On a more serious note, Ed Reed has talked about retirement as early as May 2012.

Ed Reed quickly backs off initial hint at retirement - NFL.com

Do you have any evidence Ed Reed will play for the New England Patriots next season or that your baseless opinion?

I'm not going to jump in on this one. Rather, I'll just point out that Reed has been talking retirement for the last couple of years now and hasn't done it. He's still playing at a high level.

Why would Ed Reed want to leave the Baltimore Ravens? At least Ed Reed has a competent cornerback playing in the Ravens defensive secondary.

I would honestly have to think long and hard over whether or not I would take Rodney RIGHT NOW over what we currently have. The 2008 Rodney would have no doubt in my mind.

I wonder the same thing. Could a 39 year old Rodney make the pass defense go from suck (28th) to 20th or so with his knowledge and presence on the field alone.

#1 Clone Rodney Harrison

#2 Draft him

#3 ????

#4 Profit!

The Ravens are getting older on defense while the Patriots defense is younger. He also has a chance to play for a team that has one of the greatest QB's of all time and an ultimate chance to win a Super Bowl with only an improved secondary.

Not once has Ed Reed publicly stated his desire to leave the Baltimore Ravens organization.
