"Mongo not know. Mongo only pawn in game of Life"

RIP Mongo.

He was a solid player for the Lions when Detroit had a pretty formidable team. It was also a lot less regulated then and some vicious hits were the norm, not the exception.

I meant to post a link a couple days ago about his rapidly deteriorating condition. It's sad to see him pass, bit he isn't suffering from his dementia anymore, so there is that.

My favorite story has to be the one they mentioned in that article, where he was back in the NFL after a suspension for alleged gambling:

When he returned to the Lions in 1964, Karras poked fun at his own reputation, once refusing when a referee asked him to call the pregame coin toss.

"I'm sorry, sir," Karras said. "I'm not permitted to gamble."

Who is Mongo?

Blazing Saddles (1974) - Memorable quotes

In the great Mel Brooks movie Blazing Saddles - a spoof of westerns - Alex played a big dumb character named Mongo. If you haven't seen Blazing Saddles, it is a great movie made before the age of political correctness. It has so many great lines, characters and performances, but I think my favorite is Madeline Kahn's showgirl/prostitute character who sings about all her men "they quote Byron & Shelley, then jump on your belly.."
Cleavon Little plays the 1st black sheriff in a western town and is amazing in his performance.

Rent it, download it, but see it.

RIP Mongo. RIP

Great player would have been in the HOF imo if not for the gambling scandal. I remember the Thanksgiving Day game in 1962, they were the only team to beat the GB Packers that year. In that game the Lions sacked B Starr 11 times and won 26-14. Lions weren't a great team but had an excellent Defense.

What in the wide wide world of sports is goin on here?
Badges? We don't need no stinking Badges!
Hey! Where all the white women at?

Are none of these ringing a bell? All of them from the same move. By the way, I am 33 and I love Blazing Saddles. But Spaceballs will allways be my favorite. My forum handle is suposed to read Major A--hole in reference to it.

RIP Mongo! Hope you get lots of Candygrams(not the explosive ones).

KO punch to the horse was priceless.

Suddenly, I'm feeling very old....... :(

I am 29 and it is one of my favorite movies if that helps :D

But I am a bit of a movie buff and the 70s and 80s are where most of my favorite movies come from.

I love Spaceballs also, intentionally avoided saying Spaceballs too (two) because infortuanately we never got it I believe a rumored title was Spaceballs three the search for two but we were depreived.

I agree with you that I like Spaceballs more as well but that is because I am an absolute Star Wars geek and I would have to fully admit not for that fact that Blazing Saddles is better.

Shout out to Men in Tights as well.

I am Rabbi Tuckman......purveyor of sacramental wine......and mohel extraordinaire.

Hello, rabbi.

Hello, boys.

Mohel? I've never heard
of that profession.

Mohel, he's a very important guy.

He makes circumcisions.

What, pray tell, sir,
is a circumcision?

It's the latest rage.
The ladies love it.

I want one.

- I'll take two.

- I get one!

I'm game. How's it done?

It's a snap. I take my little machine. I take your little thing. See? I put it into this little hole here......and nip the tip. Who's first?

I changed me mind.

I forgot, I already got one.

Question...

I gotta work with a much younger crowd.

Oh man Second shout out to Young Frankenstein as well. Mel Brooks is king....and Its good to be the king.

Third shout out to History of the World

I guess I should shout out the Producers as well.
