One thing that might have factored into it with Hightower is that Nick Saban is finally graduating his own recruited and grown players into the draft. Saban runs a similar system as the Pats and looks for the same skill sets. This is really the first draft class of Saban recruited and developed LBs.

Nice post rob, that makes a ton of sense. I really like the Hightower pick.

No, it's not.

As a quick example: what made Jones worth trading up to 21 for, when he wouldn't take Connor Barwin at 40?

Jones averaged about 9 TFLs and about 3 sacks a year; Barwin had 14 TFLs and 11 sacks in his first year as a DE.

BB probably thought at the time that Barwin was not an upgrade to what we had on our roster already as opposed to how he views Jones and Hightower compared to what we currently have.

The Rookie salary cap also helped..

All that, plus the rookie salary cap means that you can use both #1's and not have to break the bank for it.

I believe the rookie salary cap had a lot to do with this.

2009
21. Alex Mack (5 years, $12.2 million)
25. Vontae Davis (5 years, $10.25 million)

2010
21. Jermaine Gresham (5 year, $15.85 million)
25. Tim Tebow (5 year, $9.75 million)

***

2011
21. Phil Taylor (4 years, $8.10 million)
25. James Carpenter (4 years, $7.641 million)

There's really not that much in difference at these spots, other than the optional fifth-year for 1st round picks could be much more expensive. (The average salary of the 3rd through 25th richest contracts for players at the position)

I brought up stats which showed how something like only 4/14 of our 2nd rd picks since 2006 turned out decently.
For the record, and for the people who liked the post, I count 11 second-round picks since 2006 here

Patriots draft database, 2000 - 2010 - Boston.com

Since we cannot evaluate last year's picks yet, it is really 9, not 14.

I think Rob Gronkowski, Sebastian Vollmer, Brandon Spikes, Patrick Chung count as rather more than decent, and I believe the best that any general manager does with second-round picks over a period of time is about 50%.

Jones doesn't have JPP's explosiveness, not even close. Nice player, will be a solid pro, I'm happy to have him, but Jones is no JPP.

I don't know if explosion is necessarily the word though. Vertical/broad jump is used to figure into that. Where JPP blows Chandler out the water is speed and quickness. JPP ran a 4.71 compared to Jones' 4.87 all while weighing about 5 pounds more. He was an absolute freak in that category.

Vertical
JPP: 30.5
CJ : 35.5

Broad
JPP: 9'07"
CJ : 10'0

Of course they got value. In this case the value happened to be moving up to get the players that were the best fit because there was a big dropoff after that.
Do you know the definition of value?

Value isnt trading down from the 1st round for players that see limited playing time and are gone in a few years.

Im all for having the guts to go after players that you want.

Would have loved to see BB's face when Bruce Irvin went 15 to seattle. Thats the catalyst for our entire 1st round haul.
Interesting thought. I also wonder what BB would have done at 25 if McClellin were still in play, when he was thinking about the Hightower pick.

But the Homers will proclaim the Pats still got value.

I wondered how the losers would deal with such a good night, i shouldn't have, more misery and whining-just what i should have expected from people like you.

Good luck to your Jets, they will need it.

When?

Miguels page doesnt reflect it.

Sometime after September 5, 2011 at 12:35 PM EST, because that's when Miguel last updated his site.
