Super Mario!!!

Imagine if Houston listened to all the 'experts' and drafted Reggie Bush

Well, what contract would we be offering, and how much room would we still have to make a plethora of other moves?

It's all so hypothetical at this point because we don't know who is coming and going on our own roster.

But I really doubt a team like Hou just lets him walk without any compensation.

This whole bulletin board is hypothetical, the bye week is getting us bored. It would be a big contract, with a cap hit of about $7-8 average over 6 years.

Williams had a $13.8 million salary in 2011. He'll get more will the much increased cap room in the new CBA.

Wasn't that still his rookie deal though? The rookie deals from that period were extremely inflated.

It will be big, a little lower that what Suggs got.

Terrell Suggs Contract, Salaries, and Transactions

Suggs averages about $9.7

Sure this means there is less for additional depth but guys like Tracy White, Koutouvides , Guyton are a dime a dozen and can be picked up for vet minimum at any time.

Inflated by the standards of rookies who hadn't yet proven themselves. Not inflated by the standards of a legit Pro Bowl calibur player; like Mario is.

If a 1st rd pick lived up to the hype, it's not like he'd take less money on his 2nd contract just because it wasn't a rookie contract.

You think Ocho brings off field issues? Try bringing in a guy married to a princess who has an propensity for getting captured.
Ugh, no thanks!

Not only that but the guy does 'shrooms. Also has trouble with maintaining his size. One minute he is jacked out of his mind on steroid, craping out fire. The next he makes Woodhead look tall.

If Mario Williams can play the Mcginnest role on D and If he can adjust to the Pats defensive system and If he costs less than double digit millions per year to acquire and If he doesnt cost draft picks, I'm glad to have him aboard! But that's a lot of Ifs. ;)

This is what I wrote about Williams in the draft forum free agents thread:

I'm with you a bit on that, but I can validate the money that Williams would command. There's a lot of players each year that command large money deals. Most of these players have a given position. Corner, defensive end, ect...but Williams is different to me. I could never validate spending quarterback money on a positional player. The thing about Williams, obviously, is his tremendous versatility, and truly rare versatility at that. We're talking about a guy who can play every three-point alignment other than the 0 technique at an extremely high level. On top of that, we're talking about a guy with the athleticism to stand up and play linebacker at 285 pounds. Even Julius Peppers doesn't have that kind of versatility. Quarterback money...there was a reason I used that term. I view that kind of versatility as the quarterback of the defense. On offense, all plays run through the quarterback, and with a good one you can do almost anything in the passing game. With a player like Williams you can do the same defensively. You can move him around as matchup dictates, better position your other plays, and (here's the real kicker) DICTATE where you want the offense to align their blocking. That is HUGE.

That's not all, though. Yes, Williams is a tremendous athlete with once in a generation versatility, but most freak athletes fall off dramatically when they lose their burst to old man time. Therein lies the beauty and risk mitigation of Williams' body type! When he loses his speed, he can easily put on an additional twenty pounds and become a fulltime 34 end- and play that at a high level for another 3-5 years! There isn't anyone in the league who presents that kind of package. It's probably a pipe dream, but they've got the cap, and they would go from a lower-mid tier defense to an elite one instantly. I would do anything that wasn't completely psychotic to wrestle him away from Houston.

:rocker: ^^^ You have GOT to read this, Patriots Fans!! ^^^ :rocker:

Sorry I wasn't able to circle back on this earlier, Jay. That post, above ~ and the ensuing conversation as a tangent on that thread ~ is precisely what inspired this thread. I figured Super Mario warranted a Stand Alone Thread...in the Gen Pop. :D

1 ~ It's an open question whether or not retaining Super Mario is realistic for Planet Hoosten.

2 ~ I'll humbly defer to the Miguels of the world, but I'm reading that they've got serious Cap issues.

3 ~ Drew Brees was let walk in similar circumstances, a few years ago, for nothing:

4 ~ Replacement in place. Just like on Planet Hoosten.

5 ~ Health questions. Just like Super Mario, albeit only a matter of when he's 100%.

6 ~ Folks often seem to ignore this, but Cap concerns often see Stars out the door: Asante Samuel.

7 ~ If they Franchise'm, the Hit's even worse.

8 ~ All of which means: Getting him for only the price of his Salary ~ no Picks!! ~ is possible!!

And even if it doesn't shake out that way, I'd happily give a 1st and a 3rd for THIS guy!! :rocker:

His impact would be IMMENSE.

To quote Jay:

We "would go from a lower-mid tier defense to an elite one instantly."

I like Williams potential in this defense. But I would not jump to such hyperbole so fast. He is still only one player, if an elite one. And we do not know yet how well he will transition to the Pats D. Adalius Thomas, exibit A, was an elite player on the Ravens and when he came here, he was only passably good and eventually got shown the door due to attitude issues. I am concered about Mario's transition to the Pats defense under Belichick. All-world talent does not necessarily translate to this defense - see Albert Haynesworth exibit B.

In summary, I'm not against Mario, but he would be a lot more attractive if he didn't cost draft picks. I am also not convinced he can make the transition to the Pats complex and unique defense and still retain an elite level of play. Not to mention he is going to cost a lot of $$ against the cap and that will prevent the Pats from signing other good players. We need to take care of Welker and our own before we open up the wallet for Mario Williams.

It's not just about adding ONE player. The Pats need to sign some other SOLID defensive contributors to take the defense to the next level. Safety play still a questionmark. Kyle Arrington is our best CB. Who is stepping up to be #2? Can Andre Carter come back healthy after his terrible injury. Still lots of questionmarks on D. Mario can only do so much by himself.

Well, of course.

Nobody's saying it is about adding just one player.

But Super Mario is the kind of Talent who's Ripple Effect could transform an entire Defense.

All the better if we add several other impact players through the Draft, as I've been advocating.

HaynesWorth and Thomas, when we got them, were hardly in his league.

I will certainly agree, though, that that is by no means a given.

Haynesworth and Thomas's problem wasn't talent either. It was their crappy attitude that got them out the door.

Draft mario williams over reggie bush .... Oh wrong thread.

While we are in fantasy land

who wouldn't want mario williams for mr. Krafts money. I would prefer calais campbell, bigger, stronger, a star waiting to happen but he will be resigned or franchised by arizona.

I will also take 1 mario williams 1 brandon lloyd or dwayne bowe / colston / garcon / doucet / meacham - not picky.

Ok pittsburgh you won't match on mike wallace's rfa contract, we'll take him instead.

Resign welker for three years at hometown discount. (oklahoma city money)

give us the best center - probably some big white guy from wisconsin. Has to be over 310 lbs.

Alright throw in either claiborne or kilpatrick.

Then trade us a #1 in 2013 for (one and only one) of our 2nd round picks this year.

Someone please take hoyer for a third okay a second rounder next year.

Signed - brian cashman

ps: Brooks reed sure looks good in houston. Oh we could have had him and sheard etc too. Good thing we win every week.

Houston d is very explosive off the ball. They physically handled cincy. They were able to rebuild defense in 1 year. Hint hint
