You also have to find an extra $9M a year to pay Allen as opposed to two second round draft picks on their rookie contracts. Who does that $9M come at the expense of; Chung, Mayo, Gronkowski, Hernandez, or Vollmer?

They would have to rework his contract.....

I would be willnig to bet that we will not be paynig Ocho-Stinko, Fat Albert & Greg Ellis next season.

That's about 15 million ? in savings.

Or Welker or BGJE or Branch or...

I don't think Green-Ellis will require that much to resign (~$3M a year), and there's no way Branch isn't a Patriot next season if the team wants him. He likes it too much here.

Completely forgot about Welker though!

Next time you're going to throw out insults like that, at least name the right Ellis.

As for numbers, they'd save about $1.5M by cutting Ochocinco and $7.2M by cutting Haynesworth this offseason. Ellis is a free agent. I believe they are projected to be pretty close to the salary cap next season already accounting for Ellis being gone, so we're talking closer to $8.7M, and closer to $7M after accounting for the guys who would take their places on the roster.

And would Allen redo his contract? He's in the 4th year of a 6-year contract, and has certainly lived up to it. It's just that a first round pick AND that contract is a lot for any player.

Hahahaha that article ruled. That was like NFL madlibs. The New England Patriots need (plural noun) "monkey loads" to get better on defense. Hahaha solid effort.

Actually, if you assume Bodden is done AND that Arrington or Dowling moves to safety -- or that Dowling is hopelessly made of glass -- THEN the Patriots have a depth issue at CB. Otherwise, not so much.

Meanwhile, I was amused by all the guys with Patriots ties on:

Best kickers in pressure situations
1. Robbie Gould, Bears
2. Rob Bironas, Titans
3. Jason Hanson, Lions
4. Stephen Gostkowski, Patriots
5. Adam Vinatieri, Colts

Not even that. Anything that involves Dowling not starting at CB means they're not using man coverage, and therefore DRC is useless. Anything that has Dowling starting has McCourty starting on the other side out of sheer absurdity of benching McCourty.

The only way it makes sense is if Dowling is a starter and McCourty has a career ending injury or is traded away or something:bricks:

Thanks for the financial update Miguel.

Shaun... Greg.... Pete.... The DE Ellis we have seen on the field this year,
does not resemble the Ellis that played against us in the playoffs last
year.

Jared Allen has made a lot of money the past few years.
Maybe he would be willnig to re-work his deal to a contract we could
handle. He is not going to play for chump change, but maybe he would
like a chance to get a ring.

Ron Brace and Jermaine "I want to call him Gunther" Cunningham are
sure not the answer.

We need to get a impact pash rusher.
If you have a better idea.... I am all ears.

As almost always when these deadlines come for the Pats....expect nothing, hope for anything

Three-way trade
Denver trades Kyle Orton to Miami for a draft pick, which the Broncos then package along with Brandon Lloyd in a deal with Carolina for Jimmy Clausen.
when did brandt go senile lol

I have no idea why Minnesota would give up Allen, even for a 1st round pick. That doesn't make sense. Also, unless DRC can play safety, we really don't have a need for him.

This post becomes exponentially better when read with the voice of Carl from Aqua Team.

The Pats aren't going to make any major trades. It takes too long for a player to pick up the system midstream like that. Belichick rarely makes trades because of it.

Yes he makes an excellent point. How about Gary "the run stuffer" Guyton for Jared Allen straight up? Minnesota you DON'T want to miss out on this opportunity, imagine you're run defense after this trade

I'm trying to remember a mid season trade that involved a big name in the BB tenure. I'm drawing blanks.

My guess is that Deion Branch is the biggest.

Oh yeah, and Randy Moss, but that was a trade out, not in.

Branch, of course, knew the system.

The real question is: At what positions could we quickly assimilate guys into this team? My first list is:

* OL -- in general, sure. We have two starters on OL this year who had very limited offseason work. But the only position where there would be a need is center, and that's the guy who makes the blocking calls.

* Situational pure pash rusher -- presumably. But would BB really put two of those guys on the field at once?

* DB -- it's worked OK with multiple JAGs in the past.

* Various ST roles -- sure, but we're mercifully w/o a need right now.

* RB -- probably, blitz pickup notwithstanding. But again, I'm not seeing the need.

After that my list winds down.

Doubt either of these would happen, but Jared Allen is ABSOLUTELY worth a 1st round pick. Are the dissenters KIDDING?

Not with that contract.

Oh, really?

My first thought as well. The eagles do suck against the run, but is it possible to be so bad that Guyton actually improves that facet of a defense?

I'd like to focus on something else: Brandt thinks Clausen is more valuable than Lloyd?

The Eagles need a linebacker and Guyton would help shore up their poor run defense.
