NFL.com news: Trading winds: Deals that should get done before deadline

Patriots must address defense
If New England is going to make a Super Bowl run, it must get add a pass rusher and get help at corner. Fortunately for the Patriots, they have ample draft picks to go after upgrades at both spots.

First, the Patriots should reach out to the Vikings to see if they would be willing to part with Jared Allen. He has 8.5 sacks this season, but Minnesota must start over at 1-4, so adding a first-round pick from New England would help that process. Second-year end Everson Griffen can take Allen's spot and the Patriots could also throw in Mark Anderson to help depth at the position.

New England shouldn't stop there. The next call ought to be to Philly in a potential swap of defenders.

Sending linebacker Gary Guyton along with a draft pick to the Eagles for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie would benefit both sides. I realize New England's linebacker depth would be weak in the short-term with Jerod Mayo hurt, but it's something worth exploring.

The Eagles need a linebacker and Guyton would help shore up their poor run defense. Even at 1-4, Philly isn't out of the playoff race. Rodgers-Cromartie is good, but time is running out and cornerback is a position of strength.

Adding Allen or Rodgers-Cromartie would help New England. Getting them both would make the Patriots scary.

i think 1st rounder for allen is a lot to give up ..

I like Gary Guyton but, run stopper? I don't think I'd go out of my way to get Gary Guyton to stop the run....

Is Guyton going to bring Spikes with him for running plays, or something?

I'm not sure you guys appreciate how bad the Eagles run defense is. Guyton would shore up their run D (and that's saying something) (stirring the pot).

Jared Allen would be an interesting one but he's not worth a 1st round pick at his age.

I would drive to Minnesota if necessary to get Jared Allen.

I hate to give up 1st round picks, but we are not talking about
Jared from Subway.

We are talking about Jared Allen !

Go get the beast !

If by cornerback Brandt meant safety, I agree.

Allen deff not worth 1st round pick

Wow Jared Allen has 8.5 sacks in 5 games. Give up like a 2nd and maybe a 4th? Dunno why minnesota would unload him but that would be huge.

I enjoy listening to Brandt on Sirius but this sounds like something one would pull off in a fantasy football league.

Allen deff not worth 1st round pick

Maybe we can trade that 1st round pick for two 2nd round picks
and draft another Cunningham and Brace.

Much rather have Jared Allen.

Ya, seriously. The first for Allen is a waste, too.

If we're giving up draft picks I sure as hell hope it's for a viable safety next to Chung.

Or maybe another Rob Gronkowski.

No thanks to Allen.

i would pick up allen for a 2nd and an extra lower pick at most....would NOT give up anderson to do it, i want them both

CB is not a prob right now, we have good CB's, we just need them to execute....philly has rodgers, asomogha and asante and they STILL cant stop the pass...ill take a safety from somewhere b4 a CB

would love to be able to finally have a pass rush, the guys we have cause more and more pressure every week, so we're improving, but Jared can play some serious ball (he did bad last season, was he injured? monster season 2 yrs ago though)

and we really really really could use a coverage (free) safety, above anything else really

offense is obviously great, hopefully Ocho is our secret playoff weapon, so keep him

Already gave my thoughts in that other thread. Basically, there's no way Belichick gives a 1st for Allen and THEN plays him $30M for 2.6 seasons. One or the other is worth it for a player of his caliber, but nowhere close to both. Adding DRC is a kneejerk reaction to McCourty struggling in man coverage. DRC isn't beating out Bodden or Arrington for snaps in zone coverage, and right now McCourty wouldn't start over Dowling in man coverage. With DRC on the Pats, either McCourty would lose his starting spot or DRC wouldn't be starting, and that makes no sense.

You also have to find an extra $9M a year to pay Allen as opposed to two second round draft picks on their rookie contracts. Who does that $9M come at the expense of; Chung, Mayo, Gronkowski, Hernandez, or Vollmer?

Part of the problem with Philly's defense is that Nnamdi is being asked to play out of position and to Asante's strength (zone)...or what used to be. They should have flipped Asante "I am only comfortable as the LCB in zone coverage" Samuel once they signed DRC and Nnamdi to fill another area of weakness... But instead of admitting they have a poorly constructed roster they are looking for a defensive consultant (supposedly Mangini was their first choice) to prop up their overwhelmed scapegoat DC.

Or Welker or BGJE or Branch or...

Exactly. Samuel needs to be the odd one out there, not DRC. The problem is that he's been on the block for over a year, but nobody wants his contract, his unwillingness to tackle, or his attitude.

Made me laugh. I don't think they lack pass rushers as much as focus on defense. Carter and anderson are fine IMO.

They need a safety.

Brandt is a great football guy, but he's old and i sense he's been mailing it in for years. Guyton as a run stopper? Come on now.
