Worst defense in the league...how is this possible?

I don't want this to seem like a snap reaction. but i think at some point we are going to have to accept that we have become very much like the Colts. Go out guns a blazin in offense and hope that because the other team is passing so much we create turnovers/make them one dimensional. To an extent that's exactly what happened last year... and basically what is happening this year except in this particular game TB turned the ball over in the red zone.

At least that has been my take on this defense/our teams philosophy ever since 2009.

I want to see a couple more games before I judge the defense b/c it's still kinda early in the season but so far it's been sub-par obviously.

JAWS always says BB has a vision for his team and how he wants it to be going into the last quarter of the season so he tinkers and tries some stuff out in the beginning. They have to show improvement in that time.

What you guys complaining about? Look at the Eagles, they signed all the top safeties and pay them millions......and got blowout at home by the Giants today!! So as the Falcons, look really good on paper but lost to their divisional rival Buccaneers. So as the **** Jets -- number 1 in defense?...lost to the Raiders..

So from looking around the league...I think our team did pretty good for what it worth, we just made mistake and those mistakes are correctable, and it's still early in the season...but a lot of you guys here already pushed the panic button. And you guys need to remember that we have many inexperience players on the team, not pro bowlers or whatever, young and inexperienced...it going to take time for them to learn.

Let's hope AL coming back next week against Oak so he can help stop McFadden having a record rushing day.

Overrated defensive coach.

Poor defensive scheme.

Lack of any type of elite/difference making personnel.

Refusal to address the major needs of this defense -- pass rush, Seymour replacement, talent/playmaking in the LB corps, etc.

Overrated players like McCourty and Bodden.

???????????

We lost the game precisely because Belichick FIRED the vets. We badly needed VETS at safety.

Actually.......... I put this loss more on 4 Ints by Brady, including a pick six. Not many times are you gonna win with 4 Ints. It just doesn't happen.

I get your overall point, but lets get real here. We didn't exactly do our defense any favors today.

Besides Wilfork and Mayo this defense is by name, pound by pound, worst defense in the league. I mean, McCouty Bodden Brown and the other should be the worst secondary in the past 10 years. DL rotation is bad, fresh but bad

I cant even imagine how bad without Wilfork we should look...

and the other worst defense in the league? The 3-0 Green Bay Packers

It's simple. If you score points every game you are going to make the other team throw the ball. Being this is a passing league they are going to put up yards and points making your defense look like a pee wee football team.

This is serious over-reaction.

Our corners will be fine when healthy: Bodden, McCourty, Dowling and Arrington. And Chung is solid. This is not the worst at all.

We have a very serious problem with injuries and at free safety.

What he said. We need a lot of new blood on defense next year.
We wasted a lot of good Brady years.

On a positive note, this is the best performance yardage wise for the pass defense (369) :bricks:

We have no impact players on defense. That's just it. NOBODY. Our scheme isn't good enough to mask below average players. We have gone to man coverage and our DBs are getting exposed BIG TIME. They don't have the athletic ability and skill to keep up with WRs and it's like pitch and catch for opposing offenses. To make matters worst, our pass rush is not getting there fast enough and are unable to help the stiffs in our defensive backfield.

We must switch back to zone. It doesn't make sense to stay man coverage with the lead footed stiffs we have back there. What makes things more a head scratcher is the fact that we got rid of our most athletic guy back there in Merriweather. You figure you just tell him to cover a guy and he'll stick him. He's main problem was not knowing his assignment on zone coverages and thus leaving guys open. We need an athletic guy back there who can fly around because our corner suck and Brown, Barret, or Chung don't have the speed to make up ground like Merriweather could.

They ran right through our middle and passed at will. We haven't shown the abilityt to stop anyone this year and frankly, we are where I thought we would be. Our defense was terrible last year and it hasn't missed a beat this year. Sure, we'll beat up some awful teams and our defense will look good against those teams, but against good teams, this defense can't stop a nosebleed.

We'll still make the playoffs though because Brady's not gonna have a lot of these games.

Dumping both Sanders and Meriweather, with only JAGs available as replacements, remains a mystery to me.

I watched Chicago vs Green Bay today and honestly Meriweather looked pretty good out there, knocking down passes and good tackles.. Where the F was that while he played here? man...

I think BB needs to have a serious talk with McCourty. This has to be a mental problem, you can't go from shut down corner to that bad just like that. Not at his age.

I know this is just one loss, but I can feel we're not going anywhere this year. If we make the playoffs, I doubt we can win a game.

Not defense related but I still think we need to give Ochocinco more time. I think he looked more comfortable today than in the first 2 games. He's still learning. One INT was definately a bad route on him.

Interference was in the back corner of the endzone I believe, the ball was picked off by ..Barrett(?) a few yards in front of the receiver. The ball was undercut, the penalty had no effect.

The interference was Brown not allowing the receiver to come back to the ball. Of course it had an effect.

I do remember how bad our defense looked in the early parts of 2005 and 2010. By the end of the sesaon it got much better. Even in 2003 we gave up some 30 spots early on and bad losses to Buffalo/Washington. Let's hope the offense carrries us long enough to overcome these issues and have a more balanced attack.

Have to agree.

The first pick [redzone] was atleast 3 points negated, +3 for bills.
The second pick was +7 points for Bills, with how our offense had been, a minimum of 3 for us.
The third pick [redzone] was +7 points for Bills, they drove 95 yards.
The fourth pick was +7 points for Bills.

We most likely lost somewhere between 14-20 points, potentially 28. I want to blame the defense too but we could have had 50+ without turnovers.

When you look back on it, its a total team loss. Brady is responsible for some of the picks, tips and bad routes for others. The fact is the offense gave up the ball twice in the redzone in what turned out to be a 3 point game. The defense was certainly a weak spot, and although I defended the offense earlier today, they should have put 50+ on Buffalo with another showing of nearly 500 yards and all but 10 of the Bills points coming off of our turnovers. Both units failed. I don't really remember how ST held up, Edelman had some nice returns but I remember some bad coverage late in the game too, nothing mind blowing though.

I think we seemed to do decent on 3rd down which is new. While our defense is in fact bad, I think we still win a ton of games this year as I don't forsee us throwing 4 picks in a game again any time soon.
