Mayock: Solder has ‘tremendously high ceiling’

Anyone remember the guy we picked last year who made Sport Science as rookie too?

LOVE the opening exchange:

Q: What's your favorite part about playing the O line?
Solder: "Crushing the other guy. When everything in him is defeated and you drive him into the ground."

Yes!

He did look pretty thin on video when he was drafted. But the guy is a monster regardless, Will be interesting to see if he can step in day 1. My initial though was Light is definitely gone. But , I think if he can be had at reasonable rate. Maybe he comes back and platoons.

My thoughts exactly. I feel this swings some of the leverage back towards the team in negotiations with Light because they now have Solder waiting in the wings. However, the ideal scenario would be to sign Light, as you wrote, to a reasonable deal, and work Solder in gradually over time until he is Brady's bona fide blindside protector.

It was hard to get exicited about this pick, becuase if you watched the Draft on NFL Network... they instantly showed a highlight film of him getting owned all season...

Add in NFL talent, and I was like... oh great...

i do like the pick but Mayock just eats up everything BB says or dose

NICE.

Next year we should really be paying attention to the Sport Science players for who we'll be taking in the 1st round. But then again, Belichick will just do something completely different just to mess with everyone.

Well, there is a thing in the NFL called coaching

There is also a thing called.....the weight room

There is a thing called......strength and conditioning coach.

Einstein once said that players in college who were NFL ready would like...most likely be in the NFL.

Every year this site moans and complains that we don't go out and get our own Vernon Gholston, Aaron Maybin, Larry English, Jerry Hughes, Everette Brown,....

Well im excited about it now, I think the guy will be a stud now that I have seen more of him. Typically, the networks show their highlight films, and they showed one good play, and then a ton of where he plays too high and gets owned.

FWIW, Rick Gosselin had Solder ranked as the 13th best player on his top 100. Right behind Cam Jordon at #12.

Most others had him ranked in the top 20's overall. So he was not a bad pick and was not, as draftnut's say, "a reach"

How was he getting owned when he gave up so few sacks?

How was he getting owned when he gave up so few sacks?

.003 sacks per snap if I remember correctly. That is a pretty low figure.

But the more important thing is that of the 1500 snaps he had, he only missed two his entire college career. That speaks volume to his durability. He will be much more durable and stronger once he matures in to his frame.

First, your a football fan, and you realize that the defense isn't just about getting sacks... Tackles for a loss also count.

Second, You tell me? Again, the NFL network, once the pick came in, only showed a film real of plays where Solder just played way to high and DE ate him alive... So when you show me a highlight film, which paints the player as very bad against College DE... I'm nervous.

He got owned becuase I watched him get beat on tv with my own eyes... It was like a "Top worst plays for Solder" clip.

So when they typically only show the positives, and they come out with that... I was like... ewww... really...

How are you not in scouting? or a scouting department?

If you can make the correct decision watching 3 or 4 NFLN clips, why not market this genius to a team so they can fire the scouting staff?

From a couple of videos, he looks like he has a nasty streak, which is perfect :D

Vollmer was a lot more raw with a lot more question marks and unknowns than Solder.

Out of all our assistant coaches who work out rookies for the draft, I trust Scar the most. This guy simply doesn't miss when he sees a guy he likes. Look at Mankins, Vollmer... when Scar speaks up (and he only does when it's legit), the guys he vouches for are good. And he is also great at coaching, so it's a pretty safe pick in terms of not busting on it.

Nice pick, looks like Giants and Colts had their eyes on him.

Yea, but they both made out pretty well regardless. The Giants especially had a gift fall into their lap, much like the Pats did with Wilfork in '04.

The way the Pats' tackles play historically, they don't overpower their opponents anyway. Even in his prime, Matt Light wasn't overpowering a lot of DEs.

What Scar has his tackles do is to use the defenders momentum to direct him out of the play. If you watch the tackles play rarely are they manhandling defenders rather wrestling with them as they direct them them several yards behind Brady and out of the play. Even if the defender breaks free, they usually have to change direction and slows their pursuit.

What hurt Light in a lot of cases against speedy defenders, was he didn't have fast enough foot work and could get beat on the initial step. If that is Solder's strength, he may be perfect for the Pats.

Watch the Cal game... not his best performance.

In bill i trust and i am comforted that the giants and definately the colts had him as the number 1 tackle also. Explains why we took him at 17

This is really reaching here. You're insinuating that Solder basically gives up no sacks on passing plays, but is completely terrible on rushing plays? I'd have to see some numbers to back this claim up. It's very hard to believe at face value.
