Mayock: Solder has ‘tremendously high ceiling’

How are you not in scouting? or a scouting department?

If you can make the correct decision watching 3 or 4 NFLN clips, why not market this genius to a team so they can fire the scouting staff?

WOW... Dude Chill the !@#$ out...

did I not say in my first posts, "AT FIRST I WAS NOT EXCITED ABOUT THIS" and followed it up with, Now that I have seen more, I like it... ?????

I mean come on, I am not hating on him, I only mentioned I didn't like the pink becuase of MY initial info that NFL network showed me...

I am not, nor have I once, stated that my opinion is an expert opinion, or even to be the end all of this pick. I was clear when I said, MY excitement level, MY initial reactions, was not favioarble to the pick...

So many of you on this board are way to damn ready to snap at people...

First, your a football fan, and you realize that the defense isn't just about getting sacks... Tackles for a loss also count.

Second, You tell me? Again, the NFL network, once the pick came in, only showed a film real of plays where Solder just played way to high and DE ate him alive... So when you show me a highlight film, which paints the player as very bad against College DE... I'm nervous.

He got owned becuase I watched him get beat on tv with my own eyes... It was like a "Top worst plays for Solder" clip.

So when they typically only show the positives, and they come out with that... I was like... ewww... really...

I didn't see NFLN, but what I saw of him was that he excelled in run blocking. looked better at run blocking than pass protection. Then someone said he gave up barely any sacks and I thought, WOW! So, not sure what NFLN was doing.

If we were going with an OT then I like this pick better than the one Dallas made. A lot has been mentioned about his need to bulk up. He might be skinny but don't forget he's already 320 lbs (about 20 lbs bigger than Light IIRC) The USC OT plays at about 285. Now THERE is someone who REALLY needs to bulk up. I'm glad the Pats took the "bigger" OT.

Some more info:

In 2010, he led the Big 12 with a 94.3 percent grade for blocking consistency, led the nation with 142 knockdowns, produced 10 touchdown-resulting blocks, allowed just one sack and three quarterback pressures while only being flagged once.

Vollmer was a lot more raw with a lot more question marks and unknowns than Solder.

Out of all our assistant coaches who work out rookies for the draft, I trust Scar the most. This guy simply doesn't miss when he sees a guy he likes. Look at Mankins, Vollmer... when Scar speaks up (and he only does when it's legit), the guys he vouches for are good. And he is also great at coaching, so it's a pretty safe pick in terms of not busting on it.

What happen with former TE Adrian Klemm?

Me, I'm just concerned how agile and powerful his footwork will be once he dons those Uggs boots Brady wants his OL to wear

Klemm played all the timehe was healthy... He "busted" because they gave up on his constant injuries, not his lack of talent.

Here's three vids focusing on him. He does some nice stuff and gets owned at times. He appears to be very raw to me. He actually appears more raw than Vollmer did. If he becomes a successful starter this year, Scar should get a big raise.

YouTube - Nate Solder vs. Oklahoma

YouTube - Nate Solder vs. Missouri ('09)

You always have to account for competition. Those 3 schools had future NFL ends. Houston plays in a very weak CUSA so Vollmer wasn't going up against Orakpo or Aldon Smith or Cameron Jordan.

Love this video of Solder planting a Broncs scout:

YouTube - Former Buff Matt Russell gets pounded at CU Pro Timing Day

Watching this and the Sports Science video he seems to have a natural way of lifting the opponent with his first hit and slamming him down on the follow through. Granted that's against a dummy and a scout, but I wouldn't mind seeing him planting Freeney like that once or twice.

I hope the ceiling is so high that he can fill in for S. Neal and Koppen (next year).

Quick-hit thoughts around NFL & Pats - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

One of the great things about Solder is that he's not just athletic. He's a good kid, and he "gets it," as Reiss pointed out in today's Quick Hit Thoughts:

2. It was easy to see how impressed quarterback Tom Brady was that first-round draft choice Nate Solder stuck around this week to attend his Best Buddies charity football game Friday night. Solder was the only rookie there. The scouting report on Solder is that he "gets it" off the field and he made a strong first impression on Brady.

He did look pretty thin on video when he was drafted. But the guy is a monster regardless, Will be interesting to see if he can step in day 1. My initial though was Light is definitely gone. But , I think if he can be had at reasonable rate. Maybe he comes back and platoons.

I know that he came to Colorado as a TE. He's added a lot of weight. Let's hope he can put on some more. While he's not huge, it does appear that he's spent a good amount of time in the weight room and I think I've read that some where as well.

I've also been wondering about Light lately. It's hard to see him back unless he's starting at LT. He'd be a very expensive back up, and I'm not sure he has the power to move to guard. It's strange, but I think that Kaczur gives a little more position flexibility. That said, I hope that Light is back.

I wonder if he'll have no choice but to take less money with FA following the draft. 9 teams drafted a tackle in the first 2 rounds (though some were potential guards like Ijalana).

That combined with a potential lower cap may mean that though he is worth more, he might have to accept less this season.

I'd like to see him back for at least one more year if possible.

The Cal game is brought up frequently when evaluating Solder but I'm not sure how much that will translate to the Pats. The Colorado QB had inconsistent drop depth, ranging anywhere from 5 yds to 12+ yds. Add in his proclivity for happy feet and the result is an enormous pocket to protect. In the Cal game, Solder had trouble defending such a large strike zone with a smaller/quicker guy rushing. To illustrate, try staying low while retreating 30 feet in 2 seconds.

For the Pats, this will be completely different. Brady's drop depth is precise (either 5 or 7-8 yds depending on the play call) so Solder has a smaller area to defend. This will allow him to get to his spot quicker and stay lower while in retreat. Those QB hits in the Cal game will be guys escorted around the pocket against the Pats.

My main concern about Solder is in blitz recognition. That requires familiarity with the whole line (and particulary the LOG) which will be in short supply before the bullets start flying for real.

Nice pick, looks like Giants and Colts had their eyes on him.

Does anyone have a link for this? Just curious, as I haven't seen this anywhere yet.

i do like the pick but Mayock just eats up everything BB says or dose

Mayock likes him big doses of Belichick - he craves him - it's a man-love thing - big doses feeds his habit.
