Odd, I was under the impression the defense kept the game close despite the offense & KR team, and the PR team on that fake punt fiasco, leaving them short fields to defend. In the end, having the best quarterback in the nfl and the best offense is not enough. We have lost our last 3 playoff games, and are 50% since winning our last Super Bowl.
We just can't win without a top defense, so we need to do more to make it happen.

I know we just resigned Bodden last season to a multi year deal, but would there be any reasonable way (cap wise) that we could trade him, and clear up some room to sign Asomugha? I know Nnamdi would be much more expensive, but the upgrade he would provide could be well worth it. McCourty, and NA would be a pretty lockdown tandem at CB.

Here's another way to look at it. Rating our CBs on a 1-10 scale, let's say McCourty is a 9, Bodden is a 7/8, Arrington might be a 5/6, Butler & Wilhite (maybe) in the 2-3 range. So, your Asomugha proposal spends a lot of money to upgrade the top end by 1-2 points.
I'd much rather draft/acquire a 3rd guy in the 6-8 range and a 4th guy in the 4-6 range to replace Butler and Wilhite. That way, you've raised the overall quality of the CB corps by a minimum of 4 points for the same (or, probably, far less) money. More importantly, you've considerably improved the depth/resilience.

Plus, a wicked passrush will make 7-9 rated guys into world beaters. Hell, It would probably make Arrington, Wilhite and Butler look damn good.

The success of the offense is misleading. Koppen and Connolly were horrible yesterday. Koppen blew several protection calls and we beaten soundly by Sedrick Ellis on a couple of occasions. Koppen should be able to handle Ellis or any 4-3 DT, honestly. It's the 3-4 NTs that most Centers have trouble with. And I can understand that.
The defense will improve just by the nature of the young kids getting better. We still need someone for the RDE position. And we still need an OLB who can sub in for Ninkovich or Cunningham.. And another safety to replace Meriweather would be nice, but it's not a must have.
You're right that the offense played worse than or about even with the defense Sunday despite having a far better season overall. But if mgteich is arguing that "Good enough to win if the offense is humming" isn't a high enough bar to set for the defense, he's right.
