Schefter: Public appology broke down Mankins deal

Believe me, if one of my employees publicly called me a liar, one of the last things I would do is offer him a new employment contract and accept an apology that no one would ever hear. Some of you people are daffy.

This. Players are employees, not partners.

This. When you do something wrong publicly, you better fix it publicly.

It is absolutely incredible how some here don't grasp that simple fact.

Gives a different twist to the term "fantasy football".

Well I agree with the idea this was leaked by Mankin's agent to gain attention for his client now that Brady signed his deal. After today Mankin's leverage has declined again. Epic fail by the agent.

Let's get moss a couple of years extension, he is worth it had big contributions today beyond his catches he makes the team better (prime example drawing 2 DB leaving Hernandez wide open for a big gain...

OK, Kontra, give us 1 (one) example of an owner rewarding a player with $40 million weeks after being called a liar by him in the press.

Nice loaded question. But that's not the point of what I've been talking about. So far, I've stayed away from the argument of whether or not Kraft should pay him with the only mention of it being what happens if Connolly goes down. My point centers around the fact that a public apology is not necessary at all. Especially when the player apologized directly to him.

He's signing the paycheck Just as another poster challenged earler, go to work tomorrow use a bullhorn to slander your boss, then ask for a raise if you apologize in private.

It really is amazing how quick people are to come down on Moss for going to the media about his feelings. However, the second the owner asks a player to do the same thing, it's okay. Some consistency here would be nice.

The story says that Mankins became "offended" that he was even asked, so who do you think leaked it?

The conversation should have gone something like this:

"Logan, you trashed the boss in public. You've gotta fix it, you've gotta repair the damage, in public. Something simple, no big deal."

"Okay, I'm a grown man, and I'm strangely not offended by this, because I did, in fact, f#$% up."

"Sweet. Our little secret."

"Sure thing. Here's my direct deposit info."

Seriously, let's say someone accused you, in public, of doing something you didn't do. Would a private apology suffice, or would you demand that the apology be done in as public a manner as possible? It's about repairing the damage that was done.

Yes. A private apology absolutely would suffice. The public would know that the hatchet is buried after contract talks gained new life. Only then would I, as an owner, personally talk about it to the media if asked. That's usually what Mr. Kraft is all about. I have no problem with Kraft taking a hard liner stance against Mankins. If he had kept it within the organization, he would come out the better man in this situation and Mankins would look like the ass. However, due to his actions, Kraft doesn't look any more mature than Mankins does.

.

Can someone....anyone....explain to me what Kontra is trying to say here?

How do you know they're the same people. I dont have a problem with Moss calling the media out and I dont have a problem with Kraft wanting a public apology.
I think this whole thing is contrived by Mankins agent to garner public support since he was losing the pr battle. It seems to be working on some people.

I'm not sure about what hes trying to say, i am sure that he doesn't like to lose an argument though.

Now you're just being intentionally obtuse. Go have a look at the Moss thread. There are people jumping on him over there for airing dirty laundry to the press and then not returning the favor to Kraft.

I'm not sure about what hes trying to say, i am sure that he doesn't like to lose an argument though.

Yeah because that makes a ton of sense. Please point out posters that come into a thread with a specific plan of "hey, I think I'll lose this argument today". Tell me, would you like some cheese with that whine?

If this is all you're ever going to add in whatever thread I'm in, you're more than welcome to ignore me and return to that dump of a political forum. Either refute my points or go stick your head in the sand, reflex.

This is the entertainment business.

You don't work in the entertainment business. Kraft has fans to appease.

Kraft's ego is not my concern. I don't care.

Law said much worse about Belichick. you think Belichick cares?

He cares about winning.

And Law was subsequently rewarded with a big fat contract?????

Refresh my memory, how'd that turn out?

And this changes the fact that Kraft acted immaturely himself how?

That's too bad.

It probably could have been something simple....

I'd like to thank the Patriots & Mr Kraft for making me a long term member of this organization. I'm glad I'm here & I'm ready to play football. It was a tough time & I may have said some things in frustration & for that I apologize. But right now I'm just thinking about this season & helping our team win.
Sincererly
Logan ******* Mankins

Yes. A private apology absolutely would suffice.

What world do you live in, trashing someone in public is forgotten as long as you apologize in private?

If Mankins acted wrongly in public he should be a man and admit it IN PUBLIC, to take only a private apology would set the precedent Kraft will simply bend over and call everything cool after you apologize in private? That's a magnificent recipe for destroying a locker room and an organization.

Actually, accepting a private apology and then calling the guy back and demanding that he apologize in front of the media (you know, the media which the team typically doesn't care about in regards to their opinions) as well is a magnificent recipe for destroying a locker room and an organization.

Again...

Moss airing dirty laundry to the media = bad.
Kraft airing dirty laundry to the media = good

Excellent use of logic and reasoning here.

This. Tea-ee-en.

It's a good thing you agreed with me. God knows I hate losing an argument! :bricks:

Nah dude, I'm fairly certain that the two of us could stomp any uneducated opinion into the ground....and hell man, you know dang well I wouldn't disagree with your learn-ed ass!

First off, when did I mention Moss? I didn't so don't try to bring up anything that someone else said about Moss as an arguement againt what I'm saying about Mankins.

Next, when a newspaper PUBLICALLY prints something untrue do they privately apologize to the person or do they PUBLICALLY print a retraction?

If someone publically talk smack about you, harming your reputation, why would a private apology suffice?

Mankins could have made s broad statement like drakehead wrote and that would have been fine.

Wow, some of you folks are naive. Are you even remotley buying this story?

Look at it objectively.

  1. Team offers you a contract (put aside the amount), you don't think it's good enough.
  2. You make a huge public display and call your owner out (and a liar) in public.
  3. They come back to you with a better offer, which you feel is better and acceptable and will pay you truckloads of money, on the condition that you apologize for the public trashing of the guys giving you the $$.
  4. This is something that you are willing to do face to face, but the thought of publicly doing it is SO OFFENSIVE that you are willing to walk away, even though YOU KNOW IT IS LIKELY GOING TO COST YOU MILLIONS in the end.

Sorry folks, this story has BS written all over it.

.... either that, or Mankins is the dumbest f***ing guy on the planet.

either way............. After today, I'm totally okay with ending the Mankins drauma already. Time to move on.
