Reiss reporting Jarvis Green to be cut by Denver...

Re: Reiss reporting Jarvis Green to be cut....

Who are these people? And who have they been playing against in the pre-season that you feel they are better situational pass rushers than Jarvis?

Basically anyone. Brace?

Re: Reiss reporting Jarvis Green to be cut....

I would consider bringing him in for the veteran minimum. I wouldn't have before Warren went to IR, but now might be able fill in a role as a rotational guy and possibly help mentor Brace, Pryor, and Deadrick.

Re: Reiss reporting Jarvis Green to be cut....

The Patriots defense is really young. Will they be young and good?

I wonder if Denver didn't cut him in order to re-sign him after week one.

Take your pick. Anybody that we have on the roster at this point would be better at rushing the passer.

Re: Reiss reporting Jarvis Green to be cut....

The point is that Denver is still paying him the 7 million but don't think he is worthy of a roster spot.
No, the point is that they didn't want to pay him any more money than they already have for what he's going to give him. They didn't think he was such a bad player a few months ago, did they?

They cut a player with millions guaranteed, before he played a meaningful down. That's about thinking a player is shot.

They do now that they have taken a closer look at him.

I don't worry about the sunk costs -- money that's already gone shouldn't factor into the personnel decision. But I just read that Green's salary for this year was due to be just $800,000, and that really is damning. He clearly had an unimpressive camp.

I'll respectfully disagree and say that nobody on the roster, with the possible exception of Wright, provides a better pass rush at 3-4 DE than Green. Not Brace, not Deaderick, not Pryor. Now, on obvious pass situations where we line up guys like Ninkovich and TBC at 4-3 DE, than I would agree with you, but then Green could slide down to DT in those situations.

You don't eat $7,000,000 to save $800,000 unless the player is done.

Disagree. Its the uncapped year, so teams can blow out a player without having a hit against the cap. Green signed $20 mil for 4 years. If you think you signed a player to a bad contract, now is the time to dump the contract.

Doesn't mean the player doesn't have value on a one year minimum contract.

I think the point is that Green WAS on a near-minimum contract for this year.

Re: Reiss reporting Jarvis Green to be cut....

Wasn't Dumervill IR'd yesterday? Seems like that would have created a need for pass rusher in Denver.

Is that why Green was only able to record a whole one sack last season while getting every starting opportunity affforded to him? Is that why Denver cut him without even having to see him in one game despite the fact that they owe him $7M on top of the fact that they lost their best pass rusher for the year? In one preseason half, I saw more push toward the quarterback from Brace than I had seen from Green at any point last season. The dropoff in production in the pass rush is a huge reason why he isn't here anymore. It's also a huge reason why he's unemployed as we speak with a $7M severence package.

Re: Reiss reporting Jarvis Green to be cut....

Anyone have and idea on how his release would impact potential Compensatory Picks?

You're not joking! You sign a free agent in March to a contract with a $7m bonus and you cut him without him taking a single snap in a competitive game. Even Duane Starks and Monty Beisel made it further than that.

Re: Reiss reporting Jarvis Green to be cut....

Christopher Price confirming Pats have "genuine interest" in Jarvis Green.

But it does, considering that they are paying him the 7 million regardless, in effect it would only cost them the minimum contract (around $800,000 for a player going into his 9th year). On top off that they get 0 return on the $7,000,000 investment.

But if player was cut before year two there would be a large cap hit next year, zero cap hit this year.

Pats have "genuine interest" per Christopher Price.
