It could just be a numbers thing until the practice squad is opened since Wheatley may or may not be game ready
Reiss says that Wheatley may not be back at practice this week after his injury against the Rams and this is a depth move going into a game where reserves are likely to see most of the action.
Simmons did not play against St. Louis, he is either not good enough or is too far behind at this point in preseason to warrant retention (I lean towards the latter). He may get signed to the PSquad later in the Fall or be re-signed in January to a futures contract so he has the full offseason program to bring him up to speed. We will likely have two OL's on the Practice Squad. Do you think Simmons should be one of the two? I don't.
The other choices are likely to be Larsen, Welch, Bussey and Ohrnberger.
Even if one of the four makes the roster, certainly possible, Simmons has tough competition.
