OT: Tubby Ratfink keeping his Browns job

Um . . . Ick.

Gotta think that he'll be on a very, very, very short leash..

Holmgren is saving a fall guy for when it doesn't all get turned around in a season...or two. Besides which Ratboy probably has some pictures or information he was willing to exchange for consideration... And don't forget Lerner is being asked to hire a lot of new staffers on the eve of a lockout when he's still on the hook for the last HC and two GM's he canned.

I can't wait for the Browns game. I know we're playing them next year, I can't remember if it was home or away though...

Holmgren was smart to keep him...if Mangini fails, Mangini gets the blame and Holmgren brings in his own coach. If through some miracle Mangini gets the Browns to the playoffs, it's all Holmgren's doing.

Win Win Win is what I believe Michael Scott would call this situation.

Called that one after the Pittsburgh victory. Shame on the one hand that Fredo is still employed, but at least it's one less AFC team to worry about.

Also, I wonder if Holgrem had any success recruiting any guys he had in mind for the job.

It could be he's waiting on someone. Pioli took Haley in KC because Kirk Firenz decided he wasn't ready to jump to the NFL with his son entering college and Denver tapped Josh (altough I don't thinnk Pioli or Josh wanted to poach the mothership as a sign of respect). If KC doesn't make a dramatic turnaround next season it's a lot more likely Haley hits the bricks and his OC or DC gets a shot...if we're playin, that is. Coordinator's don't generally get guaranteed deals like HC's do. Anyone who hires one this year may be paying them for nothing in 2011 while they can get out from under the rest of their staff or carry them through a lockout more reasonably...probably for less than it costs to carry one HC.

Smart move by Holmgren. Mangini had his team playing hard and improving at the end of the season. I don't know what he can do to fix the quarterback issue, though.

Well that's it... the Browns are dead to me for at least one more season.

I wonder if this makes the Pats/Browns game a primetime game now?

His boys arent available. Gruden wants another year off and Fox has 1 year left in Carolina before Cowher takes over. Thus fatboy gets 1 more year.

His boys may want to see what he does to stabilize the QB spot, too... The Browns have no offense past Cribbs...and he's winding up for a holdout.

I'm not overly surprised as I suppose it gives Holmgren a season to see how things shake out and bring in someone else if he needs or wants to after next year, as has been said already. The sweet part is that they apparently had quite the lengthy meeting yesterday, so I can only assume he was making Ratgini sweat and do a whole dog and pony show to "wow" him and beg for his job, all the while chuckling to himself knowing he was going to let him be his lame duck for a season, at most. Dance puppet! Dance! :singing:

Okay, maybe it wasn't exactly like that, but I like to imagine it that way! :D

Whats the relationship b/t/w Fox and Holmgren? I looked at the Sid Gillman/Walsh coaching tree and I'm not seeing the direct connection..

Are they in LinkedIn ;-)

I find this surprising as I figured Holmgren's reluctance to embrace Mangini meant he was gone. As a CYA approach by Holmgren, I guess it makes perfect sense. However, a 1 game improvement from the record that got the prior coach canned after a 10-6 season in a season when the team frequently looked abysmal doesn't seem enough to wait and see how things turn out in future years. Always good to be optimistic over a win streak, but Holmgren said he was looking at the entire body of work over the season (which again sounded bad for Mangini).

And now I must continue to dislike the Browns.

True. Also could have been Lerner saying, "Can't afford to pay off another coach."

Who knows.
