Patriots trading Richard Seymour to the Raiders!!!

The only thing I can possible think of is besides needing the cap space, we are switching to a true 4-3 defense with Burgess being the starting end. Seymour is a free agent at the end of the season, I would have to think that another move is coming. This does free up a ton of cap space.

Well, yeah, seeing as that leaves the Pats at 52. . . .

Ok. Well.

Green has shown in the past that he's capable of holding down Seymour's spot. Everybody was already thinking that the Pats wouldn't be able to hold on to both Seymour and Wilfork after the season. Maybe the thinking is that they'll be ok this year and now Wilfork can be taken care of?

via twitter, Adam Schefter says its for a 2011 first rounder!

That can't be all we are getting. That would be awful. I will sink into a hole of frustration and depression.

So we're a significantly worse team in 2009 and 2010 for a 2011 first rounder? wtf?

Well, the odds were that Seymour wasn't going to be on the Pats in 2010 anyway. So it is just 2009.

Also, this move might set up another move. So we need to see how the dominos fall. I don't like the 2011 draft pick because there might not be a 2011 draft if there is no CBA, but I am waiting to see how this all plays out before I get too upset.

All of this 2011 maneuvering is bizarre and fascinating CBA-wise. Is the 2011 season even going to happen?

Too, too strange.

Not sure I understand why all of these trades lately are for 2011 though...is there something about the CBA and uncapped year that makes 2010 a worse draft? Does BB think there's going to be a lockout next year?

I have long thought that trading upcoming FA for good picks is a good way to do business. However this is a bit different as we're the SB favorites.

The 2011 draft is mandated by the CBA.

2012 is the first year that might be draft-less.

Ok, I thought the CBA ended after the 2010 year. My bad. But there could be a lock out for the 2011 season.

I'm ok with this move, I was worried it was for less.

Possibilities:

1. Kevin Carter joining the team.
2. Extra money for Wilfork extension.

Seymour had one year left on his deal, I'm happy with the first rounder.

Thanks for the memories Richard.

well, at least we didn't get JaMarcus! (just joking)

hmmm...three mil of cap space and a roster spot...i'm waiting for the other shoe to drop...should make a lot of noise...

I'm just completely stunned. Why would you trade arguably your best defensive player for a 1st rounder in 2 years when you are trying to win a championship and your defense is already the weak part of your team?

It'll be nice 2 years from now when we have a top 10 pick, but damn, our SB chances just got hurt quite a bit today.

We can now safely say that no-one got the roster correct :)

How can the current CBA, which ends prior to the 2011 draft, mandate the 2011 draft????

That being said, I am sitting here saying to myself WTF...

Next we're gonna hear that Brady was traded....

That's the weird thing -- this trade seems backwards. Usually it's the championship-caliber team trading away a bit of its future to pick up a short-term impact player from a team going nowhere. This is precisely the reverse.

Let me be the first to say it...

The Patriots hate their coach.;)

Seeing how things with the Raiders are this is going to be a very high draft pick, and a very valuable trade chip. With three second rounders this year and now the Raiders pick in 2011, we could move up in the draft as high as we want and could move it in an additional trade.

I feel like Kraft has a good business mind who understands all the nuances of what is coming. I'm sure he had put in his two cents on this trade if they were going lose out on anything. Yeah he was going to be a FA, but we still could have used him this year. I am seeing another big move in the near future. Question is for what?

I really hope there is no lockout. Don't think I could handle that one.

A Raiders 1st round pick is probably a top ten pick, even in 2011.

Thanks for everything Seymour. It's unfortunate you're going to football purgatory, but it's only for a year.

The only thing I can say is that Seymour was having a less than stellar preseason and maybe Belichick and Pees saw felt he wasn't going to give them a Seymour quality season and felt it was better to get value for him now than let him walk all together next season. It will on the positive side give the Pats money to lock up Wilfork or make a big trade of their own to get a player.

Anyone know what happened with Peppers in Carolina? Is it possible BB is clearing out Big Sey to make room for Peppers? Just askin'.
