Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

My honorable mention: Cassel to Moss to tie the JEST game at Foxboro.

One of the best throws and catches any Patriot has ever made.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

This isn't necessarily my favorite but it's the first one that popped into my head when I saw the post. It happened late in the year during the first SB run, against the Bills I think. David Patten caught a ball on the sideline and was basically knocked unconscious with his head out of bounds but retained possession of the ball. There were a lot of weird plays that season that, had they not gone the Pats way, would have ended the season with a totally different result. This was just one of them.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

Defense: Has to be the Bruschi interception against Miami in 2003 after the blizzard when he's on his knees in the end zone and everyone at Gillette's throwing snow in the air to the beat of Rock and Roll Part 2.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

Favourite offensive play:

Moss's one-handed grab about 12 feet in the air over the middle against the Colts in 07. That play epitomizes Randy Moss as we've known him for the Patriots: extraordinary athleticism and great, great commitment.

Favourite defensive play:

Tedy's strip of Dominic Rhodes against the Colts (is there a pattern here? I think so.) Again, the play epitomizes Tedy.

Having athletes on our team who play with that kind of heart lifts me from my seat every time.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

Funny that no one remembered or had Wilfork's fumble return run against the Jets a few years ago,I forgot the year it happened and where Wilfork got tackled but that was cool to watch the big guy with the ball.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

d: willie on edge '03. that whole series sums up the pats run to me.
o: brady's 50th to moss, after missing him on the same pattern the play before. most memorable season ever?

playoffs is a different bag but of course the snow bowl kick has to be up there

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

Offensive: Brady to Branch deep TD pass in the 2004 AFC championship game. Despite the hostile Pitt crowd, at that point I was certain the Pats would win.

Defensive: Ty Law interception return for a TD off of Vrabel's pressure in the Super Bowl against the Rams.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

I've seen 2 guys post the intentional safety against Denver. I may be wrong but I beleive that was a ST's play (shoulda read this thread first), but if I'm right you guys get a mulligan and get to pick again.

As far as offense, Patten to Brown against the Colts-it was a thing of beauty.

Defense-Smelling salts anyone?

Yeah, if we'd won that game people would still be talking about that play.

Hahaha, I remember that, it was a revenge hit for a cheap shot on Brady, yeah? One of the most vicious clean hits I've seen.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

I'm trying to remember the recent INT where one of the veteran defenders had to hold onto the rookie to pull him back so he could block for him... I can see the play in my head but can't remember the players (was Rodney the veteran?)

But overall I'm going to go back to an inauspicious game in 2002 where the Pats were fighting for a playoff spot - they needed a win - and they needed the Jets to lose - to make the playoffs. They were coming from way behind and had to have everything break right to be able to win the game.

It'd be tough to pick out just one defensive and offensive play from that game - but I've always felt that THAT game - even more so than anything in the 2001 season - showed that if the team put their minds to it they could win ANY game they put their minds to

Many fans want to forget about that season because we didn't make the playoffs and look at it as a speedbump in the "dynasty"

For me its exactly the opposite, as that's when they really found their "refuse to lose" mentality that they carried through to the 2005 Super Bowl and beyond.

As you will recall the Patriots backs were against the wall, needing a win against the Fins (and a loss by the Jets against Green Bay) to get into the playoffs. It was the last game of the regular season.

The Patriots fell behind 24-13 with 4:59 left in the fourth quarter when Miami's Olindo Mare kicked a 28-yard field goal.

11 points down in a must win game with less than 5 minutes to go and the playoffs on the line?

No problem.

The Patriots held Miami, and eventually made it 24-21 on Brady's 3-yard pass to Troy Brown and a 2-point conversion pass to Christian Fauria with 2:46 left.

The Patriots kicked off deep rather than try an onside kick (a shrewed coaching decision), then forced a Dolphins punt, which traveled only 23 yards.

Taking over at Miami's 34-yard line, they moved close enough for Vinatieri's 43-yarder to tie it up and send it into overtime. (Which interestingly may have been the last time Adam V. attempted a 40 yard plus FG!)

At this point, everyone - including the Dolphins - sensed the Pats were a team of destiny, and Mare choked as his kickoff went out of bounds, giving the Pats the ball at their 40.

After an incompletion, Kevin Faulk ran 15 yards then caught Brady's pass for a 20-yard gain to the Miami 25. With a third-and-9 at the 24, Brady threw a 7-yard pass to Brown, and Vinatieri trotted on for the win.

The Patriots finished 9-7, in a three way tie for first place in the AFC East that the Jets won in a tie-breaker that season - not bad but it was the last time the Patriots would let another team control their destiny in getting into the playoffs.

I think the Patriots really found themselves as a team that year, shedding the perception of many that they won the 2001 SB based on good luck and good calls - and was really the main turning point in what everyone now recognizes as a football dynasty.

So I'll take any one of many offensive or defensive plays in that final 5 minutes of that game in that "lost" season as my favorites.

No. It happened last year too. But both times we expected Brett Favre to play to win in the last game of the season and, of course, he tanked it both times.

thought that play was overrated but whatever.

offensive play: brady throw to troy brown to get out of bounds in sb 36

defensive play: willie stuffs edge.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

Offense: The 60 Yard Deep Post pattern from Brady to Branch for a TD against the Steelers to make it a quick 10-0 in the 1st quarter of the 04 AFC Championship. Brady beautifully looks off Polamalu (running too far upfield to cover Patten on a crossing route) and then throws a perfect ball to Branch who had beaten DeShea Townsend. Set the tone for the game after a 2ns Steelers turnover in a row to start the game and silenced Joey Porter and those stupid and obnoxios terrible towels. Just an absolutley beautiful and perfect passing play.

Defense: Bryan Cox's monstorous hit on Jerome Pathon during the Colts second offensive play during Brady's first start in Week 3 of 01. I really think this play gets underrated in the turnaround of 01. The D played nastier and with a mean streak the rest of the game and season. Also set the tone for the Patriots later physical domination of Peyton Manning and the Colts offense in 03 and 04.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

OFFENSE:
2004 AFC Championship Game at Heinz Field
Brady to Branch bomb for the TD. I don't think any play in this era made as big a statement as that one did. It said, "You're my *****!" to the Steelers and perhaps to all the Brady naysayers as well.

DEFENSE:
2004 AFC Divisional Round at Gillette
Bruschi steals the ball out of Dominic Rhodes possession. It was the perfect microcosm of what this team, and Teddy Bruschi, are all about. IE....We just want it more and when the game hangs in the balance, we're just going to take it and there's nothing you can do to about it.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
2001 AFC Championship Game at Heinz Field
Up 14-3, the Patriots block the Steeler FG attempt which is then picked up by Troy Brown who laterals the ball to Antwan Harris (is that correct?) who goes the rest of the way for the TD and the commanding 21-3 lead.

Nice one. You could say that hit was the beginning of the dynasty. Most people not as familiar with the team will understandably point to the Mo Lewis hit but it was actually this play that spurred us towards our first victory of the dynasty. Ahhh....I love memory lane.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

Offense- It was my first Monday Night game. It was against the Ravens during the 2007-08 season. What a mix of emotions during the final drive! Hochstein's false start, Rex Ryan's timeout, all the illegal contact penalties. And with 44 secs left Brady's pass to Gaffney for a TD. Then Bart Scott had a HUGE temper tantrum in the back of the endzone. He was flagged for 30 yard and then someone else (Reed?) jumped offsides. Gostkowski kicked off from the Raven's 35. Unbelievable!

Defense-Like many others, Tedy's interception and taking to the house against Miami in the Snowball game.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

come on offensive one has to be
the pass that broke both the touchdown records for receivers and qb's. brady to moss against the giants and which basically made us clinch the 16/0.

Re: Tell us your ONE favorite Offensive and Defensive Patriots play in the Belichick

On Offense its definitely that play action fake against the Jags in the playoffs. He completely fooled the whole defense and it gave us the lead just before halftime.

It was just soooo well run.

I was thinking of the same defensive play. Things did not look good after the first two games, Drew out and now the high flying Colts were on the schedule. But after that play I realized this team wasn't going to back down. It was at that point I started to get really excited again.
