Yahoo - Zappe expected to go undrafted

It's weird to me that the Pats make these picks and during the draft, everyone goes, "Who!?!" And then they play and it turns out that they can be diamonds in the rough. Granted, there are plenty of times when they don't pan out or when people say they were overdrafted ("He could have been drafted in the sixth round!") but I tend to enjoy the picks and see if they develop.

I don't really buy that. The dude threw an insane number of TD's in college. Sure at a small school but the stats are what they are. Someone would have kicked the tires on him if the Pats didn't.

Strange looks to be worth his draft round.

There's also a pattern of the "Who!?" followed by us finding out months later that other teams also had their eye on that player, and that the public expert/media entertainment echochamber missed them. For example, there are still fans here that say with absolute certainty that Strange could have been had in later rounds despite hard evidence to the contrary.

Evaluating players with no regard to the popular evaluations, and sticking to your guns when the time comes to make the call, and then ignoring the noise afterwards, is a sign of strength. Drafting based on the popular evaluations is like picking stocks based on Reddit posts.

It often leaves fans without the dopamine hit they wanted on draft night, but Belichick would be the first to say he couldn't care less about our emotional experience with the draft.

It only takes one other team.

In the video of him getting picked and talking on the phone to his agent, it sounded like they thought at least one other QB was going to get picked before him.

Before this interview, Zappe, his agent, and the Pat's PR people decided on what the key message was that they wanted to convey. Apparently, "humility" was high on the list. In this case, it comes across as genuine, so it might be. He'll have to be in the spotlight for years for us to find out.

I really hope that TT works out, because let's be honest, while the Pats are great at drafting most positions. WR in the draft is one they consistently miss on for players that are lighting it up on other teams. They get great WR talent in the undrafted market, but for some reason just can't get a top flight receiver in the early rounds.

Hope that Zap can be good. Perhaps the Indy game can be a true test if Zap gets to play.

He (and Nagy and scouts) expected him to go undrafted a year and a half ago before his transfer to Western Kentucky, which is why he decided to stay the extra Covid year and transfer from FCS to FBS. Otherwise, he was drafted where it was expected (R4-R5) based on pundits.

I wonder if there's something in the process behind these "out of left" field picks that works better for some positions like OL (Mankins, Vollmer, Strange) than others like DB (Tavon, Richards).

Im reading some very positive remarks about Zap.

1 He is an anticipatory passer- Crucial in the NFL because by the time that you see a player come open and throw the ball, the window can close.
2 Zap alters the trajectory of long throws to fit coverages.
3 On his Pro Day, Zap threw in 30 degree weather completing 55 of 56 with 20 mph winds.
4 Russell Wilson and Drew Brees are basically the same size as Zap.

It's all in Zap's hands right now. Let's see if he can be Lou Gehrig to Mac's Wally Pipp. And let's see how Mac responds.

I kind of hate it when Teams who already have a QB take one at spot I was eyeing a prospect at another position. That said when these QB's pan out happy times are here again.

Right. But it's also like how you don't need a spare tire until you absolutely NEED a spare.

We would likely be talking 2023 draft before Halloween and be watching the QB who couldn't beat out Cam right now.

Fredo Stidman. Passed over by everybody.

Ive learned a long time ago 98% of the time there's no such thing as "reaches" or "steals" in the draft. It's the same as "risers" and "fallers" before the draft. It's just the media is just finding out about things so they pharse it as such.

Someone like me just learns to sit back and wait to see if my grade was close to the talent and value. I'm not necessarily trying to guess who goes where but it helps being right in line with the NFL in most cases/positions.

I've been saying this for years and Harry is a good example. He was always going top 40-50. Sucks we drafted him but he was always going that high.

Zappe has already justified the draft pick. Assuming Mac comes back and establishes himself as the long term starter, having a cheap and dependable backup is still a major win for the team. Him taking over the starting role would be a grand slam home run of a pick.

I think bb deserves alot of credit for having good backup qbs when needed. 11-5 in 08. 3-1 in 2016. 1-1 thus far this year. Those are really good numbers without the starter for multiple games. The only time we were really killed by not having a proper backup was 2020 and that was a lost year anyway.

If he didn’t take zappe, we woulda had gilbert the last two games?

I have not looked at the Yahoo web site in ages. I thought someone was celebrating.
