With Bodden signed, draft a top 5 receiver?

I am just wondering your views of drafting Hicks, Darrius Heyward-Bey, or another good receiver now that Bodden has signed. Moss is 33 and the rookie could be groomed to replace him and have an immediate impact as a #3 receiver.

Most of the mocks from the past couple of weeks have included the consideration of a wide receiver on Day 1 of the draft. Most of the discussion have revolved around Robiskie our Nicks. Nicks is the favorite of many. Now that we are a bit freer, there has been mention of Hayward-Bey. There has been no mention of Britt, although I would think that he would be a possibility in the second. Finally, we have been almost silnet with regard to Harvin since we don't expect him to be there, although it is certainly possible.

Harvin may be the type of player Belichick will be targeting. If you look at Faulk's age and how much he has meant to the Patriots over the last few years you would think it is in the realm of Belichick to draft a contingency to keep a security blanket in place.

I choose not to look at Harvin as a WR as much as I look at him as a hybrid 3rd down back-wr-kr. The guy is quite versatile and taylor made for this team. Good call on that MG.

The Pats may well target a receiver, but I honestly don't think that Bodden's signing is relevant to that. (IMHO cornerback was not a likely #1 pick to begin with...and WR still isn't. )

I think it's entirely possible we'll take a WR higher than expected if there's a guy they really like. That's the beauty of this year - we could take a WR (or OT) in the first round and still be able to take three defensive players in round two.

I think we have a lot of flexibility. I think we'll look to OT and DE for sure on Day 1, and maybe throw in a WR and an ILB. (Beatty, Gilbert, Nicks and Sintim?)

Nose tackles, Guards and Safeties in the middle rounds.

I definately think we'll pick one up. I'd like to get Iglesias out of OU or Harvin who can play HB and WR.

But yeah defense is the main priority.

I prefer that we sign another free agent wide receiver. Then we don't have to deal with draftee receivers.

I think that there is enough cap money to fill this need and also to re-sign Mike Wright.

I agree about signing a FA. There are some good ones out there. I would prefer one to be able to return kicks, but that would probably require drafting some young buck or give the job to Matt Backboard Slater.

As far as Wright, I was considering that the Pats may be leaving that spot open to draft a DT in the second round. One that could take over for Wilfork in year 2. It would certainly help negotiations with Wilfork as DT would no longer be an obvious need. If Wright was signed that would definitely be the case and Wilfork will get his pay day.

best case scenario is we resign wright. then draft best player available. i wouldnt mind harvin with one of our 2nds tho if possible i think he would really quicken up our offence even more

I would hate drafting another WR high especially in the 2nd round. We have been overly unsuccesful in the 2nd round with WR's.

I hope we do draft a Wide Out very early, as long as he isn't a huge reach. I want this because it will piss some people off. It will piss off people on this board who would rather quit than try again. We have the option because putting Moss, Welker and Lewis on the field can still get it done. Get back on that horse Bill. Don't let past failures turn you into a coward.

Think of it like throwing a deep bomb off play-action on 2nd and short. If it fails you still have third down. If it succeeds you really hurt your opponents. It's the part of football that separates the winners from losers.

Why do I get the feeling there are racist undetones to the this distrust of rookie WRs? As in, "Until proven otherwise, a rookie WR is a lazy, gangbangin thug". A number of fans didn't even want Moss for similar reasons.

This is what I was thinking and after FA if we sign Wright I say we grab the top OT or reciever that slips. Remember last year no one thought that Mendenhall would get by the Cardnals (Brady Quinn going bye Miami in 07) was surpising to say the least. Now Mendenhall is still unproven but he was a top 15 pick going into the draft last year.

Players like James L, Sintim, Barwin, Mathews, Maybin, English or even Malauga and Cushing may slip into the second or worth a trade up at the end of the first. We would still have two more second rounders in the Bank.

Agreed. If they want to use a Day 1 pick on WR, might as well make an offer for Lance Moore. You know what you're getting, and won't have to deal with the WR learning curve.

I'm with tombonneau: I'd rather sign Lance Moore (25 years old, 26 right before the season) to a poison pill offer sheet and give up the 58th pick in the draft as compensation than use 23 or 34 on a WR.

Let's nip that in the bud right there: it's a flat-out preposterous slam on the character of your fellow posters.

It's been statistically proven that WR is the least predictable position to draft because of the huge variability in college offenses, and because college WRs just aren't required to do a lot of the things that make for a successful NFL receiver. The Pats are certainly not immune to this difficulty, as their draft history shows. That said, there are good arguments for targeting the position this year. So if you have a football point to make, make it. Any more incendiary mud-slinging will be deleted. Thank you.

Well if there's one guy worth taking a flyer on it's Darrius Heyward-Bey. The kid ran the fastest 40 of all but one WR at the combine this entire decade. He needs some developing, but I think he's good value at #23 provided someone like Macolm Jenkins doesn't slide.
