part of the reason for the supposed-decline in cam the last 2 years is injuries. in 2018 he was playing well 1st half of the year then injured his shoulder. Then 2019 injured his foot...The guy like many other running QB's took alot of unnecessary hits. I wonder if Bill will try and change his play style somewhat.

I know its hard to say, because we have had several guys like Edelman/Gronk play the same way...full tilt and took hits they probably couldve avoided. but at the same time QB is the most important position and you need to think about playing smart. when to run, when to slide, when to go for the extra yard.

Russell wilson is a good example of a guy who still runs and uses his athleticism but doesn't take unnecessary hits

One year deal. Big payday after the season if things go well. So, I’m thinking « no ». Let him go and do his thing.

Yes

Having had a Liz Frank injury is enough to give up the running unless its wide open.

Norv Turner and Newton made alterations to his play-style already in 2018. His injury against the Steelers had nothing to do with his mobility at all. Watt crushed his shoulder as a free rusher in the pocket.

Similarly, he never had as good of a OL in front of him as he will this year so that is another reason to be a bit more optimistic.

Ultimately there are no guarantees because injuries can happen randomly and it will come down to his own instincts when he is using his feet but my feeling is that people don't realize that his playstyle has evolved to be closer to traditional QBs than to e.g. Lamar Jackson.

Newton's style was already altered in Carolina the past 2 1/2 seasons because he is no longer a dual threat QB. So, no Bill won't change anything and hopefully tries as best as he can to copy what Turner did even though we don't have the same personnel. My guess is Sept will be really ugly like it is most seasons for us and if Newton can stay healthy that first month and that is a big IF than I trust our coaching staff will have hopefully figured something out to make the offense at least serviceable. Of course that also assumes our Oline stays healthy which is also another big IF with Scar gone.

I think they will start the season by working to have him avoid hits as much as possible. When tough games come up or in the playoffs, they will let loose.

It was never going to be the same offense Brady had. Just like BB adjusting the offense to Brady, the Pats will alter to emphasize what skills BB sees in Newton. What if any those strengths are may surprise us all come fall.

Yeah we saw how awesome the Brady offense was last season. No way they go with that noise again. Looking forward to the reinvention of this offense. I think we’lll surprise a lot of people.

Do people expect them to run the brady offense with Cam? Bill always adjusts the offense based on his personnel.

In 2016 Jimmg G offense and Brisset were totally different. Although Jimmy is probably the closest to brady offense.

BB always has guys play to their strengths, he isn't going to try and completely transform Cam into something that he's not after 10 years in the league

Let Cam be Cam and incorporate some QB options, RPO, wild cat, etc.. have plays rolling him out left, right, etc

This is true, but at the same time I think Cam's play has been trending toward being a passer first as opposed to a runner. I expect the offense to meet somewhere in the middle between what we would have seen with Brady and what Cam was running prior to Norv Turner.

IMO, I think Cam already fits this offense very well. Prior to signing Cam, I envisioned us running the ball a lot more due to lack of WR's who can gain separation or draw double teams AND our likely to be SOLID offensive line boosted by Andrews' return, no injuries to Mason/Cannon, and Wynn being out there for an entire season. I was expecting Stidham to make 3rd and short throws to Edelman/White in the short/intermediate areas. And in the red zone, I was expecting us to pound it with Michel/Burkhead/Keene/Vitale or toss it to Harry....

With Cam...I now feel that we will be able to have him contribute in the red zone...at least DB's and LB's have to keep their eyes on Cam because he can still beat people to the corner pylon or jump over the LOS. He ain't no old man just yet.....

And I expect Cam to be able to move out of the pocket and hit WR's that have broke free from coverage...which gives guys more time to get open. And I am not sleeping on what Byrd and Jeff Thomas can do....every time I read about Jeff Thomas...he looks like a poor man's Brandin Cooks. I think those two can do what Dorsett did and maybe more.

Short answer: Similar offense, different QB....

If he can’t, or won’t run, or is not effective at it, he will be a very bad QB.

Third String But Playing on Special Teams
Cam has already run the Ernhardt-Perkins offense, they'll use him similarly to Cassel. A lot of rolling pockets, some play action, RPO type plays and lots of running the ball by the RB's. They don't need Cam or Stidham to run a lot, just enough to move the sticks.
