Pete Carroll was playing two for one. It's that simple. Throw a slant off the stacked WRs - which by odds isn't as dangerous there for the reason that slant INTs tend to be of the tipped variety versus normally three layers of defense which is mitigated by having to utterly stack the LOS against Lynch. If it drops, they get a free clock stoppage and then can go either run or pass.

Add in that Carroll overthought the heck out of the play - do what wasn't expected...and the rest is history!

Man Seattle wouldn't of been there if it wasn't for that fluke play but the football gods finally smiled down upon us. dumb call but pats were the better team throughout the game and deserved the hard earned wi. Seattle didn't lose it the Patriots won it

Someone on twitter posted a PFF stat:
Lynch ran from the 1 yrd line 5 times yr. 1 TD, 2 runs no gain, 2 for loss

I.e. it's not automatic Lynch scores there.

Pete explained his thought process. On first down they went three wide hoping the Pats would match. Pats put in their goal line package. Pats stop on the one, Seattle down to one time out thinks they are best off to exploit the matchup and pass. If it doesn't work, clock stops and they can sub in their goal line package to run twice vs. the Pats.

If they run and get stopped, they have to take the timeout and then might not be able to make the subs to get the matchup they want, assuming they want to pass once to keep the Pats on their heels.

Hindsight being 20/20, Pete Carroll is an idiot. But there was some logic there. That pick was legendary.
