Just to be clear, because there is some confusion on this issue: "Protection" is quite time-limited - runs from Tuesday until after the game. Come Monday, the players can again be signed by any team.
Protecting a player provides information to other teams - either that you are thin at that position or that you are likely to elevate that player. So perhaps makes them a little more likely to be poached.
In 2022, a player can be elevated 3 times without passing through waivers instead of the two times in 2021.
