What's with all the Maroney hate?

Well, I'd like to talk about Maroney specifically in this context. Football Outsiders has a stat that measures just that, consistency in picking up needed yarsds. It's called success rate. Maroney is third in the entire NFL.

Excellent, that's an encouraging stat.

(I repeat, though, that I was absolutely not talking about LM in my idle musing about whether ypc is definitively' the most important category' for a back).

MYTH. MYTH. MYTH.

Maroney's "dancing behind the line" showed a bit last year, but not NEARLY as consistently as some of you people imagine. This year, he was apprehensive behind the line for a few carries in the opener (his first real action of the season), and a couple of times in the first half of the SD game. Otherwise, he has been GASHING the holes.

Just infuriatingly based on NOTHING and lazy "analysis."

It isn't a myth. I watched with my own two eyes him stutter stepping against the Colts. Maybe dancing is too much of an exaggeration, but he is still hesistant at times hitting the holes. It isn't much of a problem against a lot of teams, but against fast teams it will be more of a big deal.

Danny, this is a ridiculous straw-man argument you're making. I have NO PROBLEM with "critasism" (Jr. High says hello) of a Pats player. I don't even have a problem with criticism (note the spelling, recess boy) of Laurence Maroney.

What I DO have a problem with is RIDICULOUS, over-the-top, obtuse criticism of ANY player (Maroney or otherwise, Patriot or not) that is misleading, short-sighted, impatient or childish. As these words tend to describe (to a T) any and all of YOUR posts, and those of the "Maroney is made of glass/LoMar is a bust" crowd, I think it's best to just bypass you all for now, and look forward to Maroney proving you wrong and chasing you, or at least your pathetically lame "arguments," the Hell off this site.

Now go get your shine-box.

Oh please get used to it wimp. I am not going anywhere. I said I hoped Maroney proved me wrong. Since you are a cherry picking homer I am sure you missed that

The idea that ONLY Maroney EVER hesitates behind the line - for various things, including and especially DL penetration or crappy OL execution - is what seems to be the insinuation coming from a lot of you. Maroney was GASHING the Indy OLD for all of the first half. In the 2nd half, they called that ridiculously predictable, lame, over-used (especially in that game) shotgun-draw, and he got stuffed at least twice on that.

If you guys want to make your little argument about how apprehensive our 4.7-per-carry RB is, go for it, but to use the INDY GAME as an example is the height of ludicrousness. That's laughable.

Yes, we know. We see you post it from time-to-time as a cowardly form of backpedal/hedge. Sorry if that's a harsh "critasism."

It is a case of you seeing what you have conditioned yourself to believe. Every back in the league will need to stutter-step at some point if he runs 10+ times in a game. Blocking isn't always perfect. But Maroney is a victim of his failings last year and people's preconceived notions about this year. Laurence has hit the hole as hard as any decent RB in the NFL, if not better considering footballoutsiders' work.

But we see him have to dance about a block once or twice in 15 carries and those are the plays that we remember.

There is no faster D than the Colts. None. And they had the HUGE advantage of a DEAFENING home field crowd. Its all downhill from here.

That is harsh. What Pats fan with a less-than-stellar view of any of our players wouldn't hope to be proven wrong in the long term?

Its not hate but the fact that he was a #1 pick and most feel he has not shown that yet.
You except more from a #1 pick unless you are the Lions and used to busted 1st round picks.

I think some people are being hard and unfair on Maroney. The pats rotate backs a lot, so his numbers might not be as good as some others. but he does get the job done.

I quite like maroney, he runs mostly to the outside, i tend to like my rb's to run a little more north south. But it is who he is, he is efficient. I think he would have had more td's, but we went to morris often in the early part of the season in those short yardage attempts. And brady is connecting on all those passes so, as long as he is 4.2+ ypc and we are winning there is not concern. He needs to be a THREAT and he is.

I am not all that impressed by him but I am also not calling him a wasted pick or a bum yet either - I just hope he continues to develop into a guy that can carry the rock more often and with less injury time.

There is going to come a year where Brady may not have all his weapons or Brady gets injured and Maroney will need to be THE guy to carry the load,At that point we will see what he got,Its inevitable it will happen and he hopefully will be up to the task and ready.

I think you said it best....I am not disapoointed in his YPC so far this year WHEN HE IS IN THERE...........I am hoping that he is not going to be an injury prone player..........but so far doesn't look like he can take the hits without going down with something.......Time will tell......GO LoMo!!!!!
