Since we have a lot of time this next month to SPECULATE on this and that, a thought occurred to me the other day when I heard this in a podcast. Here's the scenario.

Kyle Shanahan has always LOVED Kurt Cousins going back to his Washington days. Jimmy Garopolo's contract guarantees pretty much end after this season. SUPPOSE, for "some" reason, say more injuries, or mediocre results, or whatever, Jimmy doesn't have a great year and Cousins becomes available after another disappointing season with the Vikes, the situation arises for a massive trade.

The Vikings trade Cousins to the Niners, while the Niners trade JG BACK to the Pats.....and Brady retires with his 7th ring. The succession issue is completely solved as the Pats move on with a JG, Sidham combination.

IF hypothetically, Brady still wants to play the Pats could make him part of the trade. If Brady WAS to play for another team, sending him home to SF to finish his career with his "home town team" would be the most acceptable/best case scenario for Pats fans

I know this is rash speculation at it's best, BUT the more I thought about it, the more I thought it COULD become a possibility if things don't go well for JG this season. BTW, in the podcast, one of the narrators mentioned he thought Cousins was better than JG. I completely forgot who did the podcast. Of course that comment became the crux of this being a "possibility" for me.

Just an idle thought.

Just a hunch but I never got the sense that JG even really wanted to be here, not that I blame him having to sit behind Brady for the next 20 years so I don't think that'd work out

My hunch is he would be perfectly happy here if he was the starter and any indication he wanted to leave was merely a function of the fact that he would be a fulltime clipboard holder in NE.

Sunk cost fallacy and all that but Cousins' contract is fully guaranteed the entire duration.

So in the hypothetical, Jimmy G. isn't as good, is hurt, or is otherwise less valuable than Cousins, so we end up with the less valuable Jimmy G and lose Brady in the process.

Not feelin' it.

If Garoppolo doesn’t meet expectations this season, then the 49ers are going to be awful and Shanahan is going to have to settle for being Cousins’ offensive coordinator somewhere in 2020.

Only way Tom is traded is if he shows a severe degradation in performance and ability where it becomes beyond obvious he is unable to lead the team to a Super Bowl and he wants a $25m/yr extension.

If SF wanted to take Tom and trade Jimmy for 1/2 of what he slated to make then you have to consider it.

Not sure if we have the right porn stars to keep JG happy over here.

Who is this Kurt Cousins fella ?

The Vikings trade Cousins to the Niners, while the Niners trade JG BACK to the Pats.....and Brady retires with his 7th ring.
Why would the Vikings trade Cousins ? Are they gonna surprisingly end up with a top 5 pick to go after a "generational QB" after being mentioned pretty frequently as the best team in the NFCN ? Who else would they upgrade to ?

Why would Brady retire now after saying again and again that he wants to play until 45. I mean I get why people don't take BB's "don't wanna coach into my 70s" at face value given that we only hear him say it once and that was 10 years ago. But Brady has been pretty upfront about his plans and reiterated them a couple of times.

IF hypothetically, Brady still wants to play the Pats could make him part of the trade. If Brady WAS to play for another team, sending him home to SF to finish his career with his "home town team" would be the most acceptable/best case scenario for Pats fans
Why would Brady do this ? He has no shot at winning a title there in the immediate future. They'd need to rebuild the entire offense in terms of playbook and personnel around him and then still fix their defense. That takes at the very least one season - and that is the best case. He is not continuing to play because he loves football so much but because he enjoys winning.

I was with you up to the point of Brady going to S.F. I stand with Kraft, Brady is a Patriot and will retire a Patriot. End of discussion!
Well that was just me trying to complete a scenario where Brady wants to keep playing after this season. If he still wanted to play and BB thought that for the 2020 season Garapolo would be the better QB than Brady at 43, then a trade to SF would be the best ending I could think of. But you are probably right that Kraft would want Brady to finish as a Patriot.

2nd Team Getting Their First Start
I have concerns about Jimmy G's health going forward. He seems injury prone. That said, he is nearly 14 years younger than Brady. And his potential is sky high. Plus, Brady seemed to be struggling last year. At least he did before the postseason. It would be something worth investigating.

For 2020, I’d rather have 42 year old TB than anyone else.
For 2021, I’d rather have 43 year old TB than anyone else.
For 2022, I’d rather have 44 year old TB than anybody else.
For 2023, I’d rather have 45.....

Capisce?

Brady will get such extension before the season. And if he then regresses, nobody will take him and his contract and the Pats would take on dead money anyway.

I very seriously doubt the Pats would get anywhere near a Lombardi with JG. Might as well play it out with Tom and then hope to strike gold in the draft (or with Stidham).

Why would you trade the 2022 MVP?

Jimmy G is on the hot seat for sure and see the 9ers cutting bait if they end up with anything less than 9-7.

Aside from his inability to stay on the field, his biggest weakness is his arm strength. Shanahan was constantly doing damage control during last offseason as the media kept questioning his throws as they were fluttering all over the place Manning style.

Defenses played heavy man to man until he was hurt and it exposed him. He looked pretty shellshocked against Minnesota week 1 and struggled against the Lions until getting blown out of the water in KC. Their WR’s are better than last year so things could change. He’ll also have a better running game. Defense should be better too. No more excuses for him, Shanahan and Lynch.
